When I painted my alloys I just gave them some heat with the gas torch and the paint pretty much disappeared (Paint was pretty stuffed tho, flaking etc). Probably not the best way but worked a treat for me. After that they got a quick sand, primer paint and clear. Paint stuck well enough to have the car on its side sliding on gravel and only put a few scratches in them (and no flaking).
yeah they were already flaking a bit when they came off the donor car, but then I put them into the wash machine at work and now they're peeling pretty hardout, so yeah maybe the heatgun might work? Will I warp them or anything?

whats your budget?
can never beat blasting a powder coating for quality and durability
yeah that sounds like the shit, good places in auckland to get it done? budget = pretty low, but I guess I'm willing to pay for quality.
of and spray bombs = loosebrake dust will make its self right at home on nice soft cellulose paint (i know from experience)
sorry didn't quite get that - you mean don't paint with spray cans?
-
So I just got a set of alloy rims that I want to repaint, what are my options as far as getting all the old paint off, what's the best kind of paint for wheels and is there anything I need to keep in mind when painting alloy?
-
I got a set of front and read hubs with disks and drums spare if you want to drill shit out. I couldnt be bothered. Also have s13 studs that will fit in the holes you drill out. Oh, and new lug nuts with washers to work on the 13x6.5 wheels i would sell you. LOL. Cars maybe for sale now.
nah that's all good I get shit dirt cheap through work anyway, I want to try to use swift gti suspension gear, I reckon that would be sweet.
...and adapt some IRS to replace the leaf spring setup haha!

cheers dude, haha yeah unemployment is mean, but have just got a job dismantling honda parts..
simon: sweet car man - have those CA91s got 12mm or 10mm wheel studs? I'm looking for suitable donor models to upgrade from..
-
Cheers all - oven cleaner and dishwasher sound like good plans.
Being unemployed I've got time, but not so much with the money so any diy is good.
This is a spare engine I got from pick a part anyway - I think it's only done 100k, but yeah looking at the oil I'm starting to wonder if it isn't 200k.
edit: also got to congrat you on being so super hairy. awesome.
Cheers, making use of my unemployed status to grow as much hairyness as possible.

what's a good way of cleaning caked on old oil from head and cam gear?
tried using petrol and it's moderately successful.
Man this thing can't have had an oil change in 20 years:
-
imagine the huge collection of car keys needed

sort of on topic, is anyone a whizz with the ol' electronics who would like to take a look at my Jaycar ignition kit? Couldn't get it working, and then blew a resistor while trying.
cheers old chaps
-
Yeah good to see yas all. Next time I will bring a sweater/not be such a pussy.
-
only thing you need for oil stains is normal washing machine powder. Just pour a layer on the mess and leave it on there for as long as you can. Powder will wash away eventually and oil goes with it. Works a treat.

yay I'm going to my first OS meet! how exciting!
I'll be in the trusty suzuki.
-
I reckon those copper coloured steels on the bug would look good on most os cars.

That looks mean, I want it to look a bit cartoony though.
Like real solid colour. Your one looks good position wise though.
