  1. Exhaust flange lip is broken off on one side. Exhaust shops would stock these type of flanges right?

Tidied up the engine bay. I don't think satin finish white will be that great at staying white. My crossmember is now brunswick green.

Was going to drop the engine in today, but first I had a poke around under the chassis rail and found some nasties under a splash shield:

someone put pieces of the planet Mars in there? Weird.

So chassis repairs - I assume needs to be professionally done, or at least done to a professional standard.. Since I don't really have money at the moment I think this means I'll focus on getting the ute running well for nats instead of this. Will have to take the van to Nelson next year instead. Boo.

  2. Cut, weld, cut, weld, drink, cut, weld etc.

both sides pretty much done now, which is just as well since I ran out of gas for the welder.

Will have to get a refill as I need to attack the rust that's lurking below the rear bumper, which will be interesting cause I find it really hard to weld upside down.

  3. just to fill in the timeline gap: Replacement block was sourced through Fueeeel. Got a hone and new bearings, reassembled and after a couple of trips back to Hastings the thing was back in action.

Has been pretty good apart from some carb troubles and losing water from somewhere. Managed to let it overheat a couple of times, which leads me to present day - got a bit hot on the motorway, pulled over to take a look and top up water etc and noticed poo brown milkshake oil. Grr..

Got the head looked at - as it turns out I could have spotted the issue pretty easy had I had a look.

Here's a photo of my big gaping crack: (NSFW)

Bought a new head and will be installing it this weekend.

  4. Thought I'd better make use of this nice dry weather we're having and crack into some of the rust on this thing.

    here's some!

Procrastinated too much today so this was as far as I got. New steel goes in tomorrow.

  5. RIGHT, so almost a year later - I still own this beast. Joker was kind enough to lend me his trailer after Hawkes Boes, and KK and his grunty Commodore towed it from Ashhurst to our new place in Wellington. Bless.

Some time later I scored a cheap 12R that is supposedly in good running condition, got it back home and then more time passed...

Until today, when I finally mustered some motivation and cracked into the first half of the engine swap; getting the engine out.

Wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, and with Amber helping we got it out in about half an hour.

Now I have a large space where the old engine once was.

Next steps are, clean up the engine bay, get the new engine in. Then once that's done, I need to sort out the exhaust, which is broken/rusted out. Should really get the radiator re-cored, and of course fix lots of RUST!!!!

  6. I've had this Weber 30 DGS carb lying around for a while now. Bought it reconditioned from Weber specialists up in Auckland. It's originally from a Citroen GS.

    DSCF2461Medium.jpg

Only problem is it's mounting bolt pattern is only just slightly different to the original carb, so making an adaptor plate would be difficult.

    DSCF2459Medium.jpg

So I was thinking of getting someone to weld the holes on the intake manifold and re-drill to suit the carb. Other option would be to widen and slot the holes on the carb, which seems a bit rough.

Who knows someone who could weld aluminium for me? Other suggestions?
