  1. A stilo abarth was on jules's bucket list on the assumption it would be better than the first new car she ever bought... a fiat coupe turbo. Now that was a really, really good car. The first time I drove it I put the foot down to get out of a potentially dangerous situation... and selespeed decided this was a good time to change up.

She now has an Audi TT coupe.

  2. Mk.1 or Mk.2?

Mk.1 was a poverty spec with the GT engine, and only came in 1300. By poverty, no carpets - rubber mats, originals ( like the one I used to have! ) just had a wee rev counter in a pod, although most got the 6 dial GT dash, 13 inch steels ( up from the original standard 12" ). Round headlights, and a speedo that could go round past the 0 again. No distinguishing features on the ( 2 door ) body  apart from the mex front wings. Was not built on a type 49 shell. Well, that's the UK version anyway.

Don't know much about the Mk.2...

  3. cheapest test is to smash it with a sledge hammer and then wait 30 years.

Chinese builders always used to do that around lawns that I mowed and leave bits of it everywhere on the lawn and then I was like oh hey guess what im not mowing this lawn anymore. lol.

For my sins I trained as a geologist. By the second year of the course, the asbestiform mineral samples we used the previous year were removed...

The good news... that was more than 30 years ago!

    Did you know....

Asbestiform minerals are actually flat, but they wrap themselves into a spiral, forming a very, very sharp needle. Once it enters the body, it wanders around until such a time as it finds somewhere to do some damage, so it can enter through your thumb and cause damage in your lungs...

  4. The LSD unit to fit a factory Mk5 Cortina rear end will be the Atlas LSD unit found in the 3L Capri, even in the Transit Van, or factory built Escort rally cars - read RS1600 / RS1800 factory built works spec or customer specified at build time.

As the Atlas unit is a salsbury type unit, is unique to this style of diff, and not the more common English axle found under the rear end of a normal Escort road car. The Cortina Mk3,4, and 5 diff internals load from the rear of the diff, where as on an Escort the diff head loads from the front of the diff housing.

The Atals unit is expensive, and as previous posts have already indicated, a cheaper option may be either a Borg Warner unit from a Falcon, or a Hilus diff.

The Australian assembled 6 cylinder Cortina also could be equipped with a LSD unit - I see you have been offered one. Grab it with both hands, as theyre rare and should be a bolt in replacement

This doesn't gel with my memories for sure. However, as I said, I was in Europe at the time but all I remember are English and Koln axles under pinto (and Kent) engined Cortina 3/4/5's... the V6's were pretty rare parts bin specials over there.

Otherwise, I'd have a cortina axle for the escort!

  5. Most cortinas just use a standard english axle - same as found in most escorts, capris too. So there's plenty of replacement diffs out there that'll fit straight in from Quaife, both atb and plate type, 3J do plate ones too.

( this was true back in the UK, there's this horrible Koln back axle floating around too ).

  6. Put it up on axle stands and get the wheels spinning and jump on the handbrake /brakes with your foot on the clutch.

Worked an absolute treat thanks. Now back in the land of the living.

My favourite trick - if you can -

Start and get it nice and warm so it starts easily,

Then start it in gear and drive away with foot on clutch usually it will break loose pretty quickly - especially if you rapidly get on and off the power.

Used to have to do this on my KE corolla when it sat for any length of time, did it just the other day on a Austin 1300 as well.

Unfortunately the drive is in excess of 30 degrees upwards and the engine has nothing under 3000rpm. It would be an exciting ride if I managed it!

Does this car have a build thread?

What running gear does it sport?

No build thread as yet. All I've done so far is rebuild the brakes, starter motor and put a new battery in it.

It's a 72 Jensen Healey with a 2ltr Lotus 907 slant 4 engine on Dellorto 40's, the rest is Viva, which does make for some big gaps between the gears to say the least. If I could find a W58 I'd put that in... same as what my old Excel had. Which was great. It needs loads of work, but is basically solid as a rock so will probably stay scratty this summer.
