  1. Quick update, been driving the car heaps, it's pretty cool.

New brush seals installed, much softer and nicer than the petrified old ones.

Got another set of carbs from good dude willy_monkey on here. The plan is to strip them down, clean, rebuild then swap off for the current ones.

Got a new dash cluster (mine has a couple of small cracks around the screw holes). I'll clean it up, redo the woodgrain vinyl strip and replace all the old bulbs (perhaps with LEDs) so I can actually see the instruments at night.

Exhaust has detached halfway along so it now exits pretty much below the drivers seat. Sounds very rowdy. I'm going to take the opportunity to get some extractors and redo the whole exhaust. Tuck it up nice and high for when some lowering happens too.

It's developed a weird intermittent fault where sometimes it wont start, just clicks like the battery is dead flat but if you just try a couple more times it starts up fine. Only does it every now and then, so far there is no discernible pattern or circumstance that makes it happen.

Here's a pic so this post isn't totally pointless.

  2. Cheers dwlee,

I wondered if the wheel was something like that.. I think the guy who did a restoration on it in the 90s has used bits from a couple of cars (and lots of wood screws to reassemble…), so I'm never quite sure what's original and what's not.

I don't really know enough about Mitsubishis yet, was always more of a Toyota man in the past.

  3. Bugger, after a little more research/holding it up inside my car I have discovered that that part number is for a GTO steering wheel but not my GTO steering wheel.

I have the kind on the left, this new one is the kind on the right — thinner spokes, longer cut outs with a big horn in the middle instead of 3 horn buttons on the spokes.

Should have done more research before hitting 'buy' I guess.

  4. Not much been going on with this lately, just lots of little bits and pieces. Installed an alarm/remote central locking, new stereo. I think the stereo looks pretty good (better than the silver Kenwood tape player that was in there anyway), suits the style of the car well. You can see where I put the LED for the alarm at the bottom of the second pic

Managed to get a new indicator lens to replace a cracked one. Apparently near impossible to find, after months I eventually got one by fluke — PartsWorld in Timaru had one that the label had fallen off, so they didn't know what model it was for but the part number on the lens matched the old catalogue number and it's a perfect fit. Not flawless condition, has a couple of scratches but no cracks and it polished up nicely.

I've had a few more bits and pieces arrive lately. Top rubbers and brush seal strips for the side windows and then this little NOS item from the States:

My rubber steering wheel is a bit rooted, the rubber is soft and collapsing, so I was pretty pleased to find this proper leather replacement for less than the cost of getting my one re-wrapped.

Also, while the car was clean I took it out for some night photos.

  5. I took the louvers off the other day. They're handy in summer for keeping the car cool, but make it a pain in the ass to clean the rear windscreen/see anything behind you.

I think it looks a bit more slick and streamlined.

Also making slow progress on the wheels, some more before and after:

  6. Cheers for the feedback guys.

hmmmnz, I've added a couple of interior and engine bay pics, check 'em out here:

Brock-Lee, I'd like to get it sitting super low, I've never seen one slammed, I think it would look pretty sweet. Wont go too crazy just yet as it's currently my daily drive and I have to be able to get in and out of a pretty steep driveway at home but it's definitely a bit high at the moment.

Thanks for the info dwlee, helpful to know as my old Mitsubishi knowledge is still pretty light at this stage.

and yeah snapper they wheels are proper old, of the right period, so I think they should look really good on the car. According to the stickers inside the barrels they are from 1977.

  7. Cheers, yeah haven't used iForce before, so there may be some teething problems.

Nothing too major planned at this stage, wheels and height are the main things for now. I might see if I can get new barrels for those Uni-Pex wheels to get a bit more width. The exhaust is a bit tired, so that will need looking at before too long…

I'm keeping it as a pretty straight forward daily drive at the moment.

  8. Also, when I went to pick up the car the previous owner was like "oh yeah, it came with some wheels too, they're in the boot."

Wasn't expecting much but they are actually kind of cool oldschool jap 2 piece wheels (3 piece, welded?). 6-J 13 from 1977 according to the sticker on the inside by 'Uni-Pex Parts Division'

Never heard of Uni-Pex before, does anyone have any info on this brand?

Couldn't decide if I liked them or not so I decided to refurb them and see how they look, split them, clean up the centres, polish the lips and replace all the bolts. Here is a before and after of the first wheel:

    ljbrgcao.0b0.jpg

I think I like them, so will get some tyres on and get them on the car at some stage, any recommendations for tyre size?

    Chur.

  9. Name (first is sweet): Tom
    Location: Auckland

Cars you own: 1974 Colt GTO

Mods to them (can be brief or detailed): A previous owner added a sunroof, louvers and a tape player in the 90s.
Link to pics (if you have some, and keep it a link to keep 56kers happy)
How you found out about oldschool:
    Internets
Anything else you want to add:

  10. Some of you may have seen these pics already on rotahavik, but I thought I'd stick them up here too for the lovers of oldschool rollas.

Here are some pics of my baby, 1977 Corolla SR. Unfortunately I had to sell her so I could go travelling overseas for a couple of years with the missus

This is how she looked when I first got her. Pretty mint, with a few tiny rust spots and about 3 shades of orange.

Here are a couple of progress shots during the strip down and rebuild.

And here is what she looked like after a respray, reupholster, lowering, new exhaust, tints, electric windows, heaps of little bits and pieces. Ran out of time and money to repower her, so had to make do with Toyotas mighty 1166cc of grunt. Ha ha. Seriously tho she ran mint, never skipped a beat. Sold here to a friend of a friend, secure in the knowledge she will be well looked after.

  11. Dude, that thing is well cool. I love bagged out oldschools. The old Crown's are such a fukkin funky shape, love the pillarless. Who did the install, or did you do it yourself?? What sort of coin are you looking at for something like that? I have a '77 SR coupe, was quoted about 10k around a year ago. Too rich for my blood.

Good work man, wicked to see something a bit different.
