  1. Well, you probably did read that because I think they went a long way towards S2000 regs meaning 2WD and NA about 4 years ago. The idea was to combine touring car specs with WRC, but then the tourings cars all started heading in different directions (BTCC/WTCC etc). WRC ended up going with the same engines as WTCC (1600cc + t), in the hope that manufacturers would be able to build a single engine to compete in both classes. WRC rules meant they could still be 4WD, which is not allowed in WTCC.

To date, not a single manufacturer has built a car for WTCC and WRC, so that plan kind of failed.

If you haven't watched WRC for a few years because the cars looked slow and boring and sound like crap, have another look at it now. The little 1600's are awesome, they rev up to 8krpm and sound real good. Plus the cars don't have all the electronic aids of the old 2 litres and are lighter, so much better to watch.

  2. Aint the new WRC cars going to be 1600cc turbos or some shiz?

Have been for a couple of years, but you don't need to get into the "but the 86 is a 2 litre NA boxer" arguement because the cars don't need to be road homolgated. So if Toyabaru wanted to enter one, theoretically they could build it as a 1600cc turbo 4WD WRC special, just as everyone else has. Makes it easier and cheaper to enter, but it would be cool if they did still make a road going version like the good old days.

  3. I think bare carbon would probably look better than body colour bumpers. Sure carbon is a bit wank, but if its real carbon fibre and not a wrap I think an old car in a semi-race style like yours can pull it off.

Best example I can find in a quick search. I like black bumpers.

  4. No wonder an auto 86 feels like crap after that thing.

Reading all of his posts on TS makes it seem a lot less retarded, and it's almost refreshing that after so much hype about the car, someone on a Toyota forum was still so oblivous of the fact it was RWD  ....But still surprising.

I guess it takes me back to my original thoughts that most of the buying public will just buy them and drive them as a sporty looking Corolla, nothing more.

  5. Campbell and I have been talking about hosting an evening at the Hamilton Car Club to get a group together, who all need complete their tests to gain their 'M' Grade License. I shall post the details up on the Fiat Club Facebook page and Website.

Sounds good, I've registered interest for this through Campbell.

How long have you needed to sit an exam for the clubsport license? I got my license a few years back and didn't have to sit anything.

  6. What car is it going into? It's relatively easy to setup an EFI fuel system but you have to factor in a bit of extra cost for this side of things, and people always seem to have trouble down the track with fuel surge etc. Just take this into consideration as well.

  7. Yeah I did custom ones, but they did have the formed bit on the end for the tall twincam head. I can't remember where we got them from, but if you find a set from a car with coil packs sitting further away that fit in the head you could just shorten them to suit. Only problem is most modern cars run the coils bolted to the engine, so they are usually pretty short.

I put the coils up on the heater cover, so the leads weren't much longer than factory anyway. Could probably have gotten away with factory, but they were tiny and crap.

  8. Oh, that does not sound too good not lliking the bumps on a flat skid pan!

Keen for pointers to improve this!

Yeah, I probably worded it wrong. When you button off and the nose dips, it kind of bounces around a little bit like the front is fighting the back. It'd be much easier to explain in person. It could just be old shocks to be honest.

  9. Low is one thing, but while I was watching it on the skin pan it almost seemed to rock front to back, and didn't seem to respond very nicely to the small bumps it was hitting. Just something to work on over time, escorts are far from ideal to begin with suspension wise, and there are well documented ways of improving all aspects of it, so something you can look at when the basics are sorted.

  10. That is simply insane! Can you please do a cross section of that "join" or "tennis ball of weld" we like to call it. I can only imagine they didn't get decent heat into the weld so decided more is better?

ps, good to meet you in the weekend. The car sounded pretty sweet out there. Looks like the suspension still needs a little bit of fine tuning, but it goes really well.

  11. Cool, looking forward to some more exhaust tech. I'm using this car as trial and error for what I want to do on my exhaust :) by the time you get it sorted I will just be able to apply 2 litre principals (making less power than your 1600) and do something similar without it melting hopefully

  12. Just got the results email. Well done Keegan and Steve in particular. You guys did awesomely well! Everyone else just did awesome for making the effort to attend on such a crap morning.

  13. To check bearings jack it up with the wheels on and once it's on axle stands and safe pull it out of gear. Then get someone to spin the wheel while you lie underneath with a power bar or something touching the diff housing (if you're doing the rear) up to your ear. If you do both sides you should be able to tell if one side has a fucked bearing, as it will sound rough while the other side should sound cleaner. May not work if the diff is crap too.

  14. Anyone bringing a car down or trailering their can down that can fit a bonnet in the back and bring it up to Auckland for me?

    glue it to the roof?

I was planning on making this, but still have parts coming in from UK, so won't have enough time to stitch it all together. Aiming for the second event instead. Fingers crossed.
