Here's the first time these cars were were reunited - back in 2003 - at the CHCH 4NRota Event - shortly after we finished the restoration - GR8984 looks a little different with its red grille and headlight surrounds

  2. Glenn brought a job lot of these crate engines with parts and tools support in from the US.

They were originally destined for a boat/marine power plant use - which got mothballed.

Scored nearly a full set of factory twin dizzy tools and NOS leads and fan belts from the shipment - all good.

Anyone know this car? The seller has an interesting way of dodging questions haha.

Nobody has asked why it has a repro chassis plate - and why the area around the stamped chassis number has been filled - yet :-)

When you look at a truely unmolested chassis stamping - this one doesnt quite seem to be in the correct position.

  4. Interesting discussion.

One of the local old school Rotary Tuners/rebuilders doesnt have a high opinion of the RX8 engine. He was in semi-retirement until the RX8 appeared, and now he has work all over the place rebuilding early RX8 engines.

His words on the matter "built to a price not to a quality", when talking around the castings and materials used on the RX8 engine.

I assume that the Japanese Tuners are of the same opinion. Knightsports built their PP in their RX8 for the Japanese NA Cup out of a FD block using Guru components.

The effort to insert ports for both exhaust and inlet is probably hardly worth it when the FD housings are available

So here I am looking for info on lada brake master cylinders for the imp and I discovered a listing that mentions a wankel engine option! I look the car up and indeed they did..

    Special modelsEdit

A Wankel engined Samara three-door hatchback, the 2108-91,[16] powered by a two-rotor VAZ-415 (with two 654 cc (39.9 cu in) rotors) was sold in Russia only, and only in very small numbers. With a five-speed gearbox, it was priced at a staggering 56,000 rubles.[16] Due to severe reliability problems, this remained rare, most commonly bought by police and other agencies to use as a pursuit vehicle, for which its 124 mph (200 km/h) top speed was ideal; it was capable of 0–62 mph (0–100 km/h) in eight seconds.[16] The subsequent 2109-91 five-door hatchback had the same VAZ-415 and gearbox.[16]

    Factory PP as well...

The Frey "Mazda" Museum has a Russian Police Lada that is rotary powered. Walter Frey managed to do some deal where the car was sneaked across the border after plying the "agent" with lots of $US, all cloak and dagger stuff ...it was powered by a normal Lada engine as delivered but had the correct rotary engine in the boot.

going by LF as number plate, it is likely to be post Tectly treatment that pre-82? toyotas never got

Tectyl wouldn't have saved any of the pre 82 Corrolla. The failure was caused by a process failure within the Toyota plant.

Basically they never washed the protective wax off the Japanese pressed CKD panels properly during the assembly process.

Once the cars were sprayed, the solvents in the paint caused the paint layers sitting over the wax remains, to lift off the steel, and eventually condensation would form in-the gap between the paint and the now bare steel.

After that generally by the time the owner saw what was happening to the body work - the car was shot.

Had a mate with a '81 Liftback - brought as a fairly new car from the local Toyota dealer - and watched it rot to pieces.

  7. I'm guessing a good question around the RX2 - would be why did it need a repaint. With that lower mileage - and assuming it was stored correctly - the paint should be mint.

I suspect in reality - it was relegated to a car port out the back of the dealership, and exposed to the elements, hence the repaint and all the rubbers needing replacement.

If that was the case - then Alex's point around how bad was the bodywork actually becomes a good point - spending $95K to have the car blistering in a couple of years wouldnt be a good look.

To ask that sort of money - least they could have done is got a repro decal set and replaced the factory decals

Anyways - it aint the car for me - for that sort of money investment - I'd have one mint Cosmosport - which is going to be worth a little more than a LHD RX2 4 door.....

Loving the old throttle blade ? actuators on the top of the motor. Look like wiper blade motors ar a glance.

that would be correct - they are used to vary the length of the trumpet - we had a bit of a chuckle about that when we questioned one of the Mazdaspeed team mechanics on what was used to make the intakes move.

  9. There are two main chassis designations on the Savanna/RX3

These are S102 and S124 this designates whether the car was 10A or 12A powered. The chassis designation was carried through the facelifts (or series) of the car.

In NZ we talk about 10A and 12A - as this is how the cars were imported - the first generation RX3 was imported until September 1973 which had the 10A fitted. There was a single bulk import in September 1974 of the second generation cars which had the 12A Single dissy engine fitted.

The US never got 10A powered RX3s - their first generation cars were fitted with twin dissy 12A engines.

When the Savanna was first introduced in September 1971 - the cars were all 10A powered

    In the Sedan:

    • Base model
    • RX
    • GR

    In the Coupe

    • Base Model
    • SX
    • GS
    • GSII (These were pretty much the same as the NZ Super Deluxe Coupes)

The Sportwagon was introduced in January 1972, and was 10A powered initially

The Savanna GT was introduced in September 1972. This was powered with the twin dissy 12A, and had the 5 speed gearbox

I suspect the Japanese classification of these cars is actually based on the engine technology in the cars so:

Series 1 - cars fitted with twin dissy engines - 10A and 12A

Series 2 - cars fitted with the 12A "AP" engine

Series 3 - cars fitted with the 12A "REAPS" engine

I'm unsure when the first facelift of the Savanna occurred - suspect it happened with the introduction of the AP range in July 1973.

What I'd call a series 3 car is the very last of the Savannas/RX3s - pretty much only really seen in Japan and America - in particular the SP - these have the big impact bumpers and lost the round taillights to rectangular lights.

series 3 would be a savanna, so i see why the price

be scary if it twas just a stock series 1 or 2

Its JDM - so it doesnt matter whether its S1, S2 or S3 - they are all Savannas

Asking price is most likely reflects that its a relatively stock Savanna GT in tidy condition - so 12A and 5 speed.

According to the Mazda Club guys in Japan - the RX3 and RX5 were popular with the Bosozoku "hot rodders" as they were cheap, and as result these cars are now quite scare - and expensive.

They are asking between $70K and $90K on Yahoo Japan for pretty average and non original Savanna GTs, and GSIIs

    There was about 150 cars.

    Here are some photos.

We all parked up outside the old Admin building, which is now the headquarters of MMC NZ. There was another big field of car but I got there early so I could park in front of the admin building itself

And also Mike Todd had his genuine E49 Charger there *Drool*

    IMG_5559_zpsv8grmben.jpg

Its a fairly significant E49 - its actually Rod Coppins old race car from the early 70's

It left the Chrysler factory as  race car, the cars destined for NZ didnt get the big Bathurst fuel tanks.

I think its the oldest surviving E49 as well - NZ got the first of the E49 deliveries

Its a pretty cool car to drive - the noise is amazing when it comes up on cam and the webers are wide open :-)

  12. I think you get what you pay for. I spoke to one of the Wellington Radiator Specialists - and a lot of the Chinese sourced cheap radiators are made with crap grade Aluminum, and are poorly constructed. He had seen some fail within weeks of install. We have a PWR radiator in the RX3 - which has given no problems, but you definitely pay for PWR product.

Yeah, it got removed on insta but never mind. It was basically a very similar car to the previously purple now vinyl wrapped one but after further discussion with Ricardo it is unlikely the same car just a similar one.

If you are talking about  Andy Duffin's car - that was driven at Leadfoot by Chris Green - its the same car just vinyl wrapped.

Does anyone have a rough price guide on 10A engines, I know a guy who has a couple and may sell one, he may sell it as a short block or other option is with twin dizzy/carb/waterpump/flywheel etc the motor has sat for 10-20 years but is complete - does anyone bother with 10A anymore or do people want them for true restorations?

It the motor has sat for 10-20 years - its probably only worth "parts" sort of money. Chances are the apex seals wont be in flash condition - and unless you have a supply of 10A Apex Seals and springs, they are probably best left to the restorers.... If you are going to buy, to have a play around - probably easiest to convert to single dissy, and run an electronic dissy, rather than mucking around with points.

Its fairly hard to get a 10A reliable if you are going to try getting decent HP out of the engine.

This is the main reason behind putting the 12A into the RX3 - the Cosmo is a more worthy receiver of the remaining 10A bits I have.

@rxsumo Is that clints coupe now?

No - my old car still resides in Wellington

Real old shot of my car next to the car Clint owns - the original rego numbers were 1 apart

Ironic that the cars were probably sitting in a Christchurch Mazda showroom together back in '73, and 30 years later in 2003 - they were parked next to each other in a stadium in Christchurch.
