    Coastal South Otago so quite cool in winter with many frosts and some snowy days expected. Mostly open road with a couple of small hills.

    My second car leaf has a worse SOH than that, and i drove it home from Wellington to Taupo when it had that SoH... 10 mile each way would be a breeze

    if your 70km is open road, and cold days and some hills, then a 70% soh 24kwh is pushing the limit hard and wont be a fun commute!
    If you can plug in at work and pay them $7 a week for the electricity to top it back up, then that would be a no brainer really....

    Easy peasy, the norm is an 8A EVSE (people call them chargers, but the charger is in the car technically, its just a smart switch)
    at 8A, 230/240V you have ~1.8kW of energy available
    85% of it makes it to the battery, so thats ~1.6kW

    Car can do 6.5km per kWh, so 1.6*6.5=10km of range per hour of being plugged in, so 120km in 12 hours (aka more than that car has left) so a little leaf will be fully charged and ready for action in no time!

    You can also wire a 16A caravan socket in, and then you're charging at 20km/hour

    I still think the driving experience is enough to make EV's a great option though. Its only a BYD but i find it a really nice place to spend time.

     

    100%, i wouldnt go back even if its the same price to drive an ev as a petrol, and not a single petrol driver here will believe me, but 90% of EV drivers probably do?

    never, you get a 'get out of jail free' card when driving a tired old leaf that needs DC charging :) 

    and DC charging out and about has pricing set to be on par with driving a petrol car. Why? because they can i guess? but its 3x the price of charging at home for the convenience of using their $120,000+ charger

  7. you should get work to at least join open loop, and you can setup your chargenet fob to work on openloop... there are quite a few open loop ones in hamilton too.
    Z and BP are killing it, so should join them too TBH

    The leaf is being surprisingly amazing at towing!

    Took the big pop top to Auckland and averages 4+ km/kwh (250wh/km) which is pretty great TBH. Did taupo to matamate and arrived 45% when dropping the kids off to my mums, which is a solid effort i feel.

    Tows like a champ too, jut not a big fan of the tongue weight my trailer has, so had to modify trailer to have less tongue weight, but thats ok

    would trade again

    Really? Because we've sold many of the MG5 wagons, and surely they arent any safer?

    Cars have chargers on board, and they run on AC, hence me saying its the same as any other appliance you plug in at home

    So for it to actually go wrong, you'd have to plug it out super quick and stick a finger/bucket of water in there within <10mS

  13. Thats just an AC arc, and the control pins should disconnect first and shut down the charge, thats not a 'real' issue, no different that you being able to unplug your toaster or kettle while its running and creating an arc.

    Obviously better to make it work better, but pretty lol how they make it sound way worse than it is

There are definitely issues with chargers, but its not THAT bad, we 100% rely on it every day for getting our electric tow car out and about, and sure, some chargers will/can be out but its not hard to find a replacement without it being a terrible inconvenience at all in general (yes, there are outliers etc, but overall its not bad)

    I also worked at a gas station for a few years and that was down more than our DC charger has been down in the same time tbh from it being broken, or ran out of fuel, or whatever other dumb thing that happened there that made it not work

    There are 3 dead and 2 unknown charger in the NI (so 5 dead) and the blue is being used, green is available... and thats just chargenet

    yes/no, its a weird balance, but overall packs are getting better at cooling and bigger capacity, so overall the charge rates can go up.
    Charging a 24kwh pack from an OG Leaf at 50kw is the same as a 200kW into a Tesla 100kwh pack, and the leaf had zero cooling, and everything now has active cooling. Even a renault Zoe just had air cooling, were still densely packsed, but those packs are WAY better than the Leaf ones.

    Heat fucks them, and higher voltage lower current helps with heat, as well as higher capacity so lower C rating during charge and discharge helps also. They also slow down from 250 and wont maintain that during a charge

  16. which would be a massive task, and no way thats being rolled out in 2024 right?
    The EV fleet is still at f-all % wise, so i wouldnt be surprised if they kicked that can down the road yet again
    People complain about it, but at 3% EVs on the road, and a LOT of those being shit leafs doing 10km a day, there would be f-all revenue being collected from EVs and RUCs

    thats assuming people dont just 'unplug' their speedos anyway
