I had some sharnes with @scooters recently about old FMC log skidders, I was saying that as a kid a friend of Mum and Dad had a friend who worked for FMC and gave us lots of promo material etc and that Dad had made a wooden toy based a FMC skidder that had been a huge favorite when I was little.

I asked Dad to send me a photo of it to pass on to Scooters but I think Dad's a bit bored and he went next level on the photos. They are too cool not to share.

So to clarify I didn't make any of this stuff, Dad did 30 plus years ago.

  2. Hah yeah I found it has enough end float to make the mainshaft drive gear rub on a selector decent bolt and undo it so I best get onto fixing that thing eh

at least I know why it has 45939293493 neutrals and 4 gears

don’t  bank on that bike being around but I’ll do my best to hang onto it for ya haha

as for me.... I might have to look at buying something different to ride.

  3. All kw were sourced from the states at around that time but shipped ex Canada so they could say they were built in the commonwealth to save tax.

All ‘custom built’ as they still are so would’ve been specced with whatever driveline. Allison and an 8v92 or something would’ve been pretty flash gear for the day. Pretty much nobody ran autos unless they were behind a two stroke unless it was a rubbish truck. Looks like the second tank in the left hand side might be an air start one. how good.

Up until the late 80s the best power output was the 8v92t or a 12v if you wanted to be a big boi but not many did that way.

The odd cat v8 too but I haven’t come across many of those.

More or less all kenworths since late 70s/early 80s for our market are built in Melbourne. Vastly different to the US models as they’re all used to cart heavier weights in general than the us haul.

Was talking to someone about driving trucks like that in traffic, he said you have to memorise what car was in front of you so you can go when you see that car pop out of the blind spot

I imagine having a camera on the bumper would be a help

Yep lots do now. Blind spot mirrors on the front of the bonnet is common in the us but not so much Nz.

Saw some footage that a customer recorded in his first day in that red and white t904 logger I posted before. Can’t see shit going over crests on logging roads. Like driving the motu with your visor covered in mud.

  5. That truck was a prototype for evaluation in oz. early as series 60 Detroit etc. front page of build sheet says that it’s a prototype and may have different parts fitted compared to build sheet etc.

it did some miles in oz for evaluation then got sent to Nz for a press release type roadshow from what I’m told

some dude dropped a container on it at the port so it was written off

  6. T659. Yeah they’re quite stumpy short bonnets on those. 8x4 are a specific to NZ designed alongside a few big time loggers so they work well for that kind of thing.

T90X are the steeze tho. 6m radius blind spot from the front of the bonnet. Driving by feel

heres that t900 I posted a couple of posts back. Saw it today at the vintage af show in feilding. Owner has a mean fleet of old tractors and crawlers as well as trucks. Daughter pointed the badge out from a distance and wanted a pic with it. Poor kid fizzes over old vehicles.

Pretty neat rig. Has had an interesting life.
