  1. I've got one installed in my daily that's connected to the alarm, so if the alarm goes it messages me. Guy that installed it said it's illegal to wire the remote shutoff to the fuelpump, but have it wired to the starter.

Battery does go flat if I leave the car more than a week or so though.

  2. It's more than likely the alternator brushes. You can get new ones from Repco etc for around $20 the last time I did them... pretty sure you don't need to solder anything in the escort ones too. They just slot in, very easy swap and saves getting a new alternator.

  3. Hey mate, I'm going to be looking for someone to do all the wiring in my Escort soon. It's the original engine but I'm looking for a few mods to the standard wiring system. The car is completely gutted at the moment interior wise so should be pretty straight forward for someone to install the new loom once its been made. Only prob is I'm in Welly, can see the current state of the car in my build thread. Would be keen to get an idea of what you think it might cost to do this:

    • Rebuild loom (Have complete existing)
    • Battery in boot
    • New starter motor wiring (Using honda starter, prob the same)
    • New distributor wiring (12v wire)
    • Wire new coil (maybe no change)
    • Add relays for headlights?
    • Electric fuel pump wiring
    • Electric radiator fan wiring
    • Spotlight wiring
    • De loom engine bay
    • Ready for higher powered stereo?
    • Alarm / Immobilizer / GPS / Killswitches

    Cheers

    Matt

(more around any changes required to the loom to support a semi decent stereo / alarm etc)

  4. Cheers for the feedback!

Looks like a pretty good system, not on the cheap side though. How is your current dizzy? Not too worn out? I've got a kit similar to this for my escort, http://www.trademe.c...n-838909952.htm which

seems to go great. It essentially just converts the points and condensor to electronic. Might be worth considering something along those lines, a fair bit cheaper.

Have already donated the stock dizzy to a mates project but have heard those are good kits.

You could do it for $600. All you need to do is not be money bags like Pete.

Would also require the hassle and cost of someone explaining to me how it all works and probably help wiring it all up.

Am i likely to see major performance/reliability gains by going the megasquirt route?

With the stealth box, I like the idea of being able to hide that and having the engine bay electrics looking pretty much factory.

    Cheers

  5. Hey guys,

Looking to start sorting the ignition etc on my Escort and thinking about getting a kit like this (but the crossflow version) so its nice and simple for me...

Has anyone had any experience with these and would recommend for or against them?

Also it says will only work with negative earth. All Mk2 Escorts are negative earth right?

I'm also thinking i'll want a dizzy without vacuum advance (also available) as i'm going to be running twin DCOE 40s. Should I bother trying to run any advance? Can't seem to find a solid answer either way.

    Cheers

    Matt

  6. Pinto clutch is also fine with a simple flywheel machining (re-doweling) to take the pinto clutch.

Can also shorten the gearbox tail-shaft if you don't want to move the gear leaver hole (take a look at my build thread).

Edit: Although the box will bolt up I'm pretty sure you need to modify the engine back-plate as well, some people just discard it...

  7. Hey guys,

My sister in Auckland has blown up her Surf. Apparently it's got a cracked head and she's been told it'll be 4k - 5k to repair (needs a new engine apparently).

It's a 3.0 turbo diesel. Would anyone here be interested in doing a cashie? Would need to find and fit a new engine, or check it out and see if its actually poked.

Thought it was worth an asking if anyone's interested

    Cheers

    Matt
