  1. Few weekends ago the missus and I were walking to a furniture store (married lyfe.  I live and work in Beijing now btw).  While we were crossing the road at a major traffic junction (bridges, exits/onramps, underpasses) we hear this loud flapping/thumping noise coming from the underpass and getting louder and louder.

We stop to turn and look wtf is that sound then this newish Audi A6 appears from the underpass with a punctured tyre, the wheel otp and the right front smashed going at about 50-60kmh.  Driver was driving super erratically and this little Hyundai is pulling out of the T-intersection then the Audi straight plows into the left front of the Hyundai, stops momentarially and then tries to carry on with an even more smashed up car!!!  Nuts!

The Audi gets about 100m down the road then just stops there and is joined shortly by the Hyundai.  A male driver gets out of the car and can't even stand up straight and is obviously in some state of mega OTJ/crazy.  He is slamming his fists down at the car, pointing at the Hyundai and shouting something while a back log of traffic and on lookers watching stunned.

We were expecting that the guy was being chased by some cops but there weren't any chasing cop cars.  I swear it was something out of a movie scene.  And thinking back we were lucky the guy didn't turn into our direction as we were standing on the corner of the road without any protection which is a bit scary to think about.

Later according to news reports the guy had been driving his own car after all nighter OTJ and had crashed into a Taxi.  Then he got out and threatened the taxi driver with a wooden bat and smashed the windows of said taxi.  He then hijacked an Audi and carried on driving in his wayward ways and also crashed into 2 pedestrians of which one unfortunately died from resulting injuries.  All in all he crashed into about 7 cars before finally coming to a halt a couple hundy meters from where the missus and I were standing.

  2. Yeah man.  Miss those days.

I sold it to some guy around Taranaki ways (Fielding?).  He owns a lot of old Toyotas and stores them in a shed.  Reckons he tidied it up lots and hooks up 3rd doing burnouts no sweat haha.

I only got to drive it once at Hamptons with the bigger turbo and it went pretty well.  Before the driveshaft poo poo'd itself and the fuel/brake lines.

To be fair that car was a POS but I loved it so much.

  3. Yeah IRS.  I didn't realise yours was solid rear.  Just the perch/buldge on the bottom arm was a larger diamater than the sleeve/seat which comes with the rear springs.  They're made for an AE86 which must have a smaller diamater perch.  I was afraid that it was going to slip out or not sit centre so just didn't use it.  Maybe it'll work sweet on yours.

Also I remember now.  I actually tried GX71 rear springs first and they were also too soft for my liking.

And correction, I ended up using rear springs from a Sierra wagon, not Cortina (it was a few years ago now!).

  4. Hey man cool car!  I'd love to own another Carina sometime in the future.  Though it'd have to be pre-face lift as I am particuar :P.

BC Red's (for AE86) went pretty low on my old Carina, though not sure what the availability is like these days.

I never ran the rear seat/sleve because they didn't sit right on the rear lower arms.  In the end I got rid of the rear BC red springs because they were too soft/saggy and put in some Mk5 Cortina ones and cut down to height.  Worked a treat!

  5. Crashed my first car (Sweet Ex Lancer with 4G63, LSD etc) into... wait for it........... a tree along the gravel driveway that leads to Meremere dragstrip. I was in 6th form I think, on my restricted and hadn't been driving for long. Decided to be a cool dude and try get it 'sideways' on gravel, as my mate was in his Starlet in front of me. Yep, Friday night and all for all the folk driving into Friday Night Dragwars to see. Front left quarter was pretty bashed up and ended up selling it for only $250 :(

Second crash wasn't so bad as it was while drifting (funnily enough at Meremere run off area). Was pulling some sweet manji's but the Carina straightened up and kissed the dirt bank. Only a bashed up LF guard and a broken/bent rack end and rod. After a trip to Repco and an eyelignment it was skids on again tho haha.

Pretty minor compared to some stories on here... crazy buggers!

  6. The Carina has power steering right... except that when you want to turn the wheel from side to side (forced, not auto-returning) it pretty much braces up... is this just OS 80's fail tech? Anyone know of anything that I can do to improve/get better PS? FYI also running 25mm spacers up front, low down and directionals.

    Chur bay!

    Opps, if you don't know TA63 / 3TGTE
