  1. As a MLC car there has to be some aspect of inappropriateness/impracticality about it so 'common' things such as MX5's etc probably not ideal.  A few that I think would be candidates:
XJS Jag Coupe (Completely impractical and probably seldom running)
Porsche Boxster (Well they just look a bit try hard)
Classic Series 1 Elise (Just look like a toy, plus impossible to get in/our of when you get older)
Audi TT (Start that hairdressing career!)
Late Model Mustang (Actually might be the go if budget is OK)
Jag XKR (A more modern version of the XJS)

Good luck, look forward to hearing what you decide on, and more importantly why!

  2. Based on my experience with the Fraser I suspect your options are:
    1) Go and find the doors.  Full screen and no doors is not a good combination
    2) Take the screen off.  I have an aero screen that I can put on instead but then you need eye protection if not a full helmet
    3) Use the deflectors as you have.  I have never actually tried this as the doors always made more sense

Regardless ear protection is useful.  If I am around town then I use a beanie over my ears which also has the benefit of protecting my balding head from sunburn.  On long trips I do that and also use cheap throw away foam ear plugs.

I know several people who have tried the wind deflector behind the seats with mix results and only with doors on.

  3. No idea on the law & there seems to be a bit of interpretation involved as well.  My first Fraser has 4 point harnesses with standard buckles & the current one has one of those for the pax & a 5 point with turnbuckle for the driver. I have never been questioned with either. That said I go to a specialist workshop not the local VTNZ. Good luck

  4. Personally I wouldn't want to drive around with a standard diagonal belt. The Fraser has a quick release turnbuckle race harness with crotch strap on the drivers side and one of those ones you posted on the passenger side.

The race one is a bit of a faff to use but you get used to it. In some ways they are easier than those 4 point ones because all the straps are loose so when you are sitting on them it is esier to deal with plus the crotch strap stops you submarining which can be an issue. My car is logbooked but have never needed it to get a WOF with the harnesses. Even if questioned I would be happy to argue the safety aspect. Finally if you want to do any motorsport with it then the diagonal won't cut it.

  5. I have been through the rollbar thing on my Fraser.  When I bought it the car already had a log book but with the approved bar I was still not allowed to enter dual sprints at Ruapuna as it was deemed too low.  Getting a new taller one made was a bit of a mission as the structure of the car simply doesn't allow a (technically) compliant MSNZ bar to be attached, the rear stays would end up way behind the car so have to be steeper to mount in the boot.  The forward bar is an issue if there is not somewhere on the chassis to mount it to already.  It took quite a lot of communication with technical staff at MSNZ to get it done.  Of course if the isn't log booked then you will probably get away with just make something taller and it won't be an issue.  Let me know if you want more details.

    Good luck.

  6. I used Berger Jetdry which is Dulux product on my shed - http://www.bergerpaints.co.nz/product-selector/product-detail/berger-jet-dry-heavy-duty-gloss.  It is not water based but isn't a '2 pack' type thing either.  Just open the can and stir then apply.

It was onto new concrete which was down for 4-6 weeks so I acid etched first and then did 2 coats of Jetdry.  Easy to use and is looking good but is less than a year old.  Easy wipe of of fluids from the old British car as well.

  7. There isn't that much flat land in Akaroa and for whatever reason the organisers seem to want it to be 'by invite'.  Regardless, there was some nice stuff there and the weather was great.  Not so the overdrive in the Healey...

Anyone recognise the white Daimler by any chance...

Try change the battery in your multimeter, when they get low they read wrong. I had this once and google told me its because the internal battery voltage is used as a reference, or something like that.

I had that with an old 4age alternator, read 18v. Changed Alternator, same thing. Turned out to be the multimeter battery even though the low voltage wasn't indicated.

Yes.  I once convinced myself that the alternator was over charging and took it off the and into the auto-sparky to test for me.  It was fine and as I was walking out the door he said, oh by the way check the battery in your multi-meter...  Of course when I put my glasses on I could just see the low-battery indicator:grin:

Agree, cool concept, makes me wish I was older than 35 haha (my current cars are very 90's which I guess fits with my age).

My dream car has always been the F40.

But that is the great thing, you can keep adding cars.  I am, a 60's baby but I could claim that the Healey is really a 1950's design so sneak another 60's one into the collection - you know like maybe an E-Type!  At 35 you have some great cars to choose from - Prius's and Leaf's will become classic whilst you are alive!

  10. Some really cool stuff in this thread but no way can I get down to just 1!  I have lots of dream cars and am on a journey to collect something from every decade I have been alive.  My criteria is pretty loose but I have to have had some sort of connection to the make/model.  I am lucky enough to have started with what I used to draw as a sports car as a kid and also had a Mathchbox model of one that had been handed down from the older brothers, the classic Austin Healey 3000:50568517_Healeyathome.thumb.JPG.8042056f4c202d033e28890a86b1fcdc.JPG

For the '70s it has to be one of these, a mates older brother had one that I used to lust after:

For the '80s not sure.  My pride & joy back then was a Mk2 Escort 1600 Sport that cost me more than a years salary at the time that I then sold for a Starlet Sprint - you know the 'flash' 1300cc one!  Maybe a build a Starlet with 4A-GE that my boys could help me with.

For the 90's it would be one of the Rally inspired cars, probably a Cosworth or a Lancia Integrale

2000's would be something Italian, probably one of the 147 GTA with the 3.2 V6 in it.

Already have the 2010's sorted with a Lotus Elise SC - a modern day Healey and then some!

Meanwhile, I will get back work!

Hopefully the summons to the disputes tribunal will all be too hard for him and he will get in touch and do a deal

Maybe, but in my only recent experience with the disputes tribunal it was more like:
    1) Hearing 1 - Late advise that he didn't get the original summons & info and so the hearing time and place was not suitable
    2) Hearing 2 - No show (via phone) and then a call to the courts to say he had been waiting by his phone but it didn't ring
    3) Hearing 3 - No show and adjudicator agrees with my case and request for costs giving respondent 28 days to reply as to why this should not be the case
    4) Respondent replies that it is all so unfair and that it really is my fault that his dodgy (new) turbo had incorrect castings allowing the oil and water to mix
    5) Court had finally had enough and said tough, you have 28 days to pay
    6) No payment within 28 days so I lodged a claim with the bailiff
    7) 2 days later I had the money

Be prepared for the long haul, they know how the system works and it takes a long time!  By the end though, I was quite enjoying myself .  Whatever you do, stick to the facts and have evidence of those facts.  Luckily I had a long email chain with the guy I took to court showing he hardly, if ever responded so he found it difficult to claim he had tried to resolve the situation to the courts.  Also remember the adjudicator has seen it all before so don't get tricky.

Good luck, I hope it goes well.

  12. Just FYI, the Fraser radiator is quite 'square' in shape so that it is a good fit in the nose cone, you might need more than just some tape to close yours off.  I will keep an eye out for your Dad, I also have a Healey 3000 so go on a few 'old' car runs that sometimes have MG's

  13. Like the others said, 90 is not that hot.  One of the big issues cooling 7 type cars is getting the air to go THROUGH the radiator rather than AROUND the radiator.  An indicator of this problem is that you get higher temperatures at speed versus in traffic.  Both of the Fraser's I have had have run hot in traffic but fine on the open road and at the track.  If yours runs OK in traffic but not at speed then I think you have an air flow issue.  How hot does it run when in traffic on a hot day? (quite hard to test with our weather at the moment!)

    I would:
    a) Check that the temperature gauge is correct
    b) Make sure the system is bleed with no air locks, you might need to jack the front of the car up to get make sure the cap is clearly the highest point
    c) Block the air gaps around the radiator to ensure air is forced through it
    d) If you are using an electric fan is it run the right way for the side it is mounted on?

Electric fans are more efficient pulling rather than pushing air through the radiator, but again on 7's packaging is often and issue, on the Fraser it pushes.

    Nice MG too.
