Maybe look into AAPlus for next time
Hello there. We have been AA members for 30 years or so. The only help they offered was to tow the vehicle to a workshop which wouldnt open until Monday. That was the same answer from Foton Roadside Assist also. The option we persevered with was best for what we were hoping to and needing to achieve, but certaily the AA have their place when you may be stranded and not have access to a pool of amazing people that have the willingness and ability to help during the weekend

UPDATE! "FIVE UJs later", at least a hundred calls and txt, a mince and cheese pie, a bag of service station lollies with jet planes, and (this will make you laugh) a 1/2" drive UJ with 29mm socket later, we FINALLY got the Tunland back together and ready for some more drifting!
Again, a MASSIVE thank you to @98cc and his family for their amazing hospitality! We were extremely lucky and fortunate to have made our way to their casa. It was very difficult to leave! Not only did they give us access to a full workshop, they housed us for the night, fed us, offered us a very "rare" opportunity to see some amazing things we would otherwise possibly never see in this lifetime, and shared some good old yarns from all things Villiers to pregnancy and tomato sauce!
The highlight (definition - an outstanding part of an event or period of time) was when @98cc and I popped into a parts store and asked the chap if he had any listings for a UJ with a 29mm cup size. He massaged the keyboard and vanished into the showroom, only to return with a 1/2" drive UJ with 29mm socket! it was quickly evident the UJ we presented to have replaced was not an indicator as to what we needed So after educating him as to what a UJ is, helping ourselves to the catalogs behind the counter, and showing him how to search items on their system, we left in haste. It was however great to have a chuckle amongst the chaos.
What a fantastic weekend. Cant wait to do it again! Which could possible be within the next 50,000km if not sooner!
Thanks @98cc you are a LEGEND!

Hello there. If only it were that easy. When it comes to our woes, we seem to go all out above and beyond the standard poo scenarios to epidemic OMFGs. What an absolute mission! Outcome pending ...

Hello there. It is a work in progress! Despite giving the UJ measurements to the genuinely nice lads at Repco in Howick, the UJ given was not the right one (luckily confirmed with a gut instinct), so we vibrated our way to the Repco Distribution Centre in Mount Wellington to buy what was then supposedly the right one ... ish.
Long story short, the Tunland is at @98cc casa, drive shaft on the workshop floor, waiting for another UJ that will actually fit which we will HOPEFULLY source tomorrow!
We cannot thank @98cc enough for his AMAZING help, and his family also for their overwhelming generosity welcoming us into their home and offering us a bed for the night and yummy hot toasted sandwiches!
Absolutely shattered, was a 4am start on only 2hrs sleep, so time to shut the eyes and dream of UJs that fit, Austin Sevens, Villiers engines, and albion gearboxes

Hello there. We are seeking some urgent help. We have blown the rear UJ on our Tunland and are currently outside Repco in Howick. We have purchased a replacement UJ as close to the measurements as possible (measured while still in the vehicle), but have never replaced one before. Is there anyone in the Howick area with UJ experience that may be able to assist please? Sadly we need to be mobile tonight to return to the Hawkes Bay
Many thanks

Dick was a neat old guy wasn't he ? We did a bit of mower/rotary hoe swapping.
Hello there. Yes, he certainly was. We met him at an A&P show. He had an old Villiers powered vibroller displayed, which was what sparked our interest to chat. In a few short moments we were having an in depth discussion about Morrison Industries and Sidney & Jack Morrison, which quickly turned to Dick telling us about his 150 plus mower collection and how he still gets someone to mow his lawns for him
It was a tragedy that he passed too soon, as too his wife. It was also a tragedy that many items from his collection were taken to a scrap merchant here in Hastings. We have tried to save and keep together as much of his collection as we could, and have a few small items left reserved for when we are able to complete ownership. We really hope we can put together our project before December, which will be dedicated to Dick.
If you happen to have any Morrison related items, or Raleigh, Agee etc that were manufactured by Morrison Industries you may consider parting with, we would be very interested, as we are documenting the history of Morrison Industries and would like to have a dedicated display space to present our physical collection along with the history

Morris 8/minor sidevalve gearbox would be a decent upgrade
Hello there! We wouldnt even know how to modify or upgrade something, but are not too bad at pulling things parting and re-assembling them (sometimes).

The 'magic wand' gearlever has a tapered ball on the end of it and pivots inside a bushing part way up the tophat. It's probably just got itself jammed between two of the selector shafts.
If you're brave you could just hit the base of the shaft with a hammer, but the ball tips are fairly brittle so it's probably best to remove the four bolts and have a proper look
Thank you so much for the advise! We undid the four small bolts holding the top cover on but it only lifts about 1cm and becomes extremely tight. Absolutely no idea what is going on there, but will get another photo a tad later to show what is happening

Thank you. You may be hearing from us sooner rather than later if we cannot figure it out It might be worth us considering a spare box to pop in while we strip this one down for a major clean at least. Would you like to PM us a price? This is why we should probably strip this one:

Hello there. Are you refering to the drive in the pictures below? We would love to know what this is from, and wouldnt mind finding another - as you do

Hello there. Kiwi number eight wire ingenuity in its purest form, sadly a dying art as generations go on, but one we are trying to keep alive!

An unusual contraption. Who built it, and what for?
Sadly, we bought it from a deceased estate. We are not entirely sure who built it, but would not be surprised if the chap who last owned it did. We had the pleasure of meeting him late last year, but sadly him and his wife passed away within a week of each other at the beginning of this year We had been told by an old friend of his that he would take it to A&P shows etc and drive it around, but we do not know the specific reason he built it.
It is extremely unusual! And being what we guess you could call 4WD is just legendary Our plan is to most likely strip it, blast it, repair anything that may need attention, paint it, reassemble it, and use it weekly on our little block. Oh so much to do before December!

Hello there! Thank you so much @locost_bryan for your AMAZING help! Now to figure out how to strip and rebuild it as it is stuck in gear In the mean time, we still have to identify the B&S engine model, the transfercase(?) on the rear of the gear box, and the front diff! Thank you so much again for your help

Hello there. We are hoping someone may be able to identify our gearbox. We have been told the chassis is an Austin Seven but have no idea if the gearbox is specific to the chassis, and cannot seem to find any pictures of one the same online. It also appears to have a transfercase(?) on the rear to provide power to both diffs. Yes, it has both front and rear diffs! Even though we are trying to identify the gearbox, we would also like to identify the Briggs & Stratton engine model it is powered by. We cannot seem to see any numbers what so ever on the engine. Many thanks

NEW QUESTION: Does anyone know of any GQ/GU chassis about, minus cab, with or without intact driveline? Or a rough idea of what one may be worth?

I have found 2x what are essentially MQ Patrol ute Chassis and Deck (Cabs are there, but rusted to hell) for cheap. I like the idea as they are period correct, but that also limits things in some of the same ways as above with the Datsun.
QUESTION: is the MQ Patrol a good 4WD chassis? The ones I am looking have the H260 HD rear diffs, and the C200 front. Leaf sprung all round.
OR... Should I hold out for a GQ/GU chassis? (Y60/61)Hello there. The MQ should provide a good solid foundation with a full chassis with beam axles for your project. If the chassis's and running gear are in tidy condition, and you can pick them up for $500.00 or less you will be doing extremely well! Keep what you need, keep what you want, keep some spares, and flick on the rest (if any) to recoup some cost. Don't be put off for a moment about leaf springs. Depending on what you intend to do with your vehicle 4WD wise, the leaf spring might just be suffice. If not, it is very simple to upgrade the suspension for articulation, weigh carrying capability etc. As you mentioned, the MQs are period correct for your current truck so stay true to how you feel. Anything you do will be an improvement over your standard 720. We had an MQ and absolutely loved driving it on and off road. It had the SD33T diesel engine and five speed gearbox. We also had a G60 which is the earlier model with the P40 4.0L straight six petrol engine and three speed gearbox! We have also owned GQs in both diesel and petrol, manual and auto, as well as GUs in auto. What was the most fun to drive for us? G60 P40 manual. What was the strongest go-to truck for heavy work and offroad capability for us? GQ TB42E auto. What was the most cost effective yet efficient 4WD for us? MQ SD33T manual. What was the most comfortable long distance travel truck for us? GU TB45E auto. This is what we have expereinced, and everyone will have their own expereince. Get what you can afford, dont be afraid to do your own thing, and enjoy it PS. If you are replacing your current driveline, we would be interested in your transfer case

How you found out about oldschool: Another OldSchool member suggested we join
Anything else you want to add: We have a small organic life style farm in the Hawkes Bay and have had an interest in older small farm and industrial equipment for many years, but this was not something we ventured into other than finding such items fascinating at A&P shows etc. We have however recently had an urge to act on that interest of finding old farm and industrial type equipment to hopefully replace some of our more modern items and be a little more vintage where possible on our little block. We have absolutely no idea what we are doing, but as we figure it out and make some progress we will be happy to share our interest in what we have done
