  1. Ok we're back.

The car's all stripped out and I've found some nasty surprises. I need some advice. I've got rust around the bottom of the windshield.

And some gnarly stuff on the front ?crossmember? right under where the bottom radiator hose must have leaked. See hole in ?crossmember? right above bracket.

Dad recons these rust areas are "too specialized" and should be dealt with by a panel beater. I recon finding a rust free cut for the complete piece on the bottom of windshield, cutting out the old, drilling the spots (see photos) and fitting and welding it in would be a job but is doable. I'm umming and arring about the little bracket. It seems important. I could just cut it out, weld a patch in and fab up a new bracket. Or I could get it done proper by a panel beater. I'm not sure. Help me out here please!

More update material(rust) to come EDIT:(tomorrow).

  2. Hi all,

Meet PogoSan. Affectiontely named so by the Girlfriend.

A strange specimen, imported from Japan, a Ke74 "van" featuring high roof and some other goodies.
    post-20414-0-56022600-1472723876_thumb.jpg

Other goodies include a mighty 5k-j twin squash, t50 gearbox (from the factory!) and a lot of ride height.

    My plans include:

    Fix rust + paint.

    Restore interior.

    Retro sounds.

    Low.

    Retro jdm wheels. (Ssr mk1s?)

    Extractors + exhaust.

    Carbs. (Quad cvk carbies?).

    Msd ignition.

    The distant future may include:

    Full engine rebuild.

     - Cam.

     - Solid lifters.

     - Head skim.

    Lightened flywheel.

    Electric fan.

    LSD.

    Who knows...

I am currently stripping down the car for sanding back, rust repairs and paint. More on that soon.

    Cheers, Oli.

  3. Cheers for the input fullas. I'll probably ask around and see whats available. Don't have a fortune to spend... I'm funding with some of my annual holiday pay so I have 12days and counting down to get a bunch of stuff done and about $2700 to chuck at the project). Hopefully I'll find someone friendly who will be willing to paint her up for a reasonable price.

    Main things are,

    Wrong final stage sandpaper grit.
Lots of areas missed (wheel arch inner edge, all panel gap edges or owner gets tired and says 'yep, that'll do')
Metal or bog not prepped correctly before primer applied.
    Primer left too long.
Cheap products used (eg, super cheap stuff)

I could write an essay on this lol

Any pointers? What grit would you use for final stage? Will be sourcing my paint etc form Wynnfraser Paints Whangarei, they supply the pros so quality shouldn't be an issue.
You should write an essay, help out the ones with none of the know :-D

I found a friendly painter that would let me work on it in his shop, I sanded it down and stripped it at home then took it too his shop, he did the undercoat then let me block it out

Wish I had some contacts who would let me do similar.

cost me $1800 iirc. Plus side was I learnt heaps.

Exactly why I want to do it myself, idea was that I'd learn blocking/sanding/spraying techniques by prepping and spraying the primer myself, then have it painted by a professional so I don't f up the final finish.

If you're doing all the work yourself but want someone to do the final coat, you might get it for around $5-$700.
That means the painter is only going to paint the car, not fix stuff he finds along the way.

You say you are going to prime it.
You need to do this with two pack primer, preferably a high fill type.

Then you will need to block back, and fix all the small imperfections along the way, so it's a big job......I know, it took me nearly a week on my car.

Absolutely what I'm looking for. I'm fine with accepting how the finish comes out. Got plenty of time on my hands so no problems there.

If you get the painter to do the final primer coat, bake it, then block back, paint, you might get it for around $2-2500.

If it's a solid colour, best to do in a 2K, as base/clear is really for metallics.

Does having it in a heated booth for the priming make a big difference?
    Thinking 2k then a clear.

A quality shop will charge you a lot more, but there are plenty of small backyard shops around the place that can do a cheapie for you.

Personally, I would remove the front screen, to make sure there's no rust under there, and the new paint will provide a protective layer.
This can be removed and refitted for $200 or less.

Most important thing is the quality of finish isn't in the final coat, but all the prep work beforehand.
Good painting won't hide shit preparation.

Good call on the windscreen, will probably get it pulled out. Totally understand about the prep issue. Will be prepping to the best of my abilities, all doors off etc, down to bare metal or factory paint on the non problem areas, re sealing all the welds. Planning on getting any patches that need welding done by a panel beater so I don't have to worry about learning to weld as I go.

I was quoted $15-$20 k to do a full resto paint job, car all pulled apart, loose panels etc, and painting everything.
In fact a bigger car would probably cost more.

I use a couple of panelbeaters for my business so the deal with one of them was I would be the labourer, do the priming, and interior, then painter would do the final outer coat.  A learnt so much, and have often helped out at my painter when he gets snowed under, and I have some spare time.
Took me a month of working there most days.
I still have sanding and blocking nightmares.......

The finish is basically show condition, so I'm pretty pleased how it came out.

Got nowhere near that much cash to fork out. :P

However how much did you save by doing the hard yards yourself? The finish really does look great.

On that note. Does anyone have any mates/recommendations on painters and or panelbeaters in the Whangarei area? My grandparents (working on the car in their massive garage as no space at home) say their house painter does automotive too so will have a chat to him but want to sum up my options.

  4. Hi all, I know it's been asked many times but I may as well ask again.

Planning on painting my ke70 wag. I know not worth it. But good way to waste a heap of time and money I could be saving for travel. Oh well.

I'm planning on stripping the whole car down, interior and all trim. Just leave the glass and the engine bay. Then fixing rust, smoothing bumps, re sealing welds, cavity waxing, masking and priming up myself.

All I would need is a top coat and clear. I would want a job that made my time and effort prepping worthwhile, is quality and will last but I don't need showroom spec. Just something that does justice to and that will last on my already way too expensive daily driver.

Does anyone have any idea on what price I would be looking at? I hear GT refinishers are the go too also.

  5. Looking to paint my car in a few weeks. Got a few Q's

I am going to do prep myself, strip down, sand back, fix rust, prime.

Is removing all the glass worth it, or is leaving it in and masking off just as effective?

There is a few spots of rust that need to be cut out, is it worth buying a welder and doing it myself or easier and more cost effective to pay someone to weld in new patches after I've cut it out and made up the new patch?

Bare metal or just down a few coats of paint?

Contemplating painting myself, but totally clueless and a little short on time.

Would it pay off getting it done professionally? What price would I be looking at?

Finally any shops to recommend if I do go the professional route? I'm in rodney (warkworth) but don't mind taking it up to Whangarei or down to Auckland.

    Cheers.
