so you have 2 things going on here

add weight to the panel to stop drumming i.e dynamat stuff on wheelwells, flat panels

but then you also want something to absorb the sound so you want to use something like automotive underlay or a dense closed foam sheet product

if you have stuff rattling you use thinner foam sheets or fabric tape

dynamat will help with tinnyness, give the doors a nice thunk when you close them, but you gotta have something else as well to help with muffling noise

Thanks mate. I've got everything going on. Rattles, noise, heat. I figure Kilmat, Dynamat or whatever will be step one of a few. But thanks, good to know it's going to need help with muffling sound. Cheers

I travel long distances in my van. I used kilmat, el cheapo and dynamat.

The best results I got were from heavy shagpile carpet in the empty deck area and over the doghouse I put some thick beach towels folded up. Being a commer, I can't put fitted carpet as I need to get into the engine bay frequently. <_<

Where did you get those wing mirrors? I love them.

Great advice. Thanks mate. Mirrors are cheapies. Check out West Coast Jr on eBay or amazon. They're already starting to rust but I'll paint them anyway, too shiny for this old thing. The arms have been shortened up a lot as they were a risk to pedestrians and cyclists! Only half joking...

  3. Morning.

Finally got the right stickers on my old van and next job on the list is going to be doing the window and door rubbers and sound deadening/insulation to make the drive a little less like sticking your head in a concrete mixer.

See Kilmat comes up a fair bit on here via Amazon but lots of people are still building their stuff. Any feedback from a before and after perspective using it?

Because my motor sits between the front seats I'll prob go real thick Dynamat on the doghouse but I'll need another mortgage to do the rest of the tin can in that. So price wise Kilmat looks less painful.

    Cheers!

  4. Stuff all to report really 2 months later. Not painted yet but hopefully it'll be underway shortly.

Disappointing news is that the colour I wanted to go isn't going to work. Was hoping the Windsor Blue would be gray enough to not look silly with the red interior...but it looks silly with the red interior.

So a real left field colour choice going on - a VW colour is now the plan.

    Anyway, pics for awesomeness.

It looks like this now except all masked up to spray the door jambs etc.

I bought some mens speciality rubber products.

And the garage has gone downhill since the car is missing.

  5. Had a 04 Legacy 3.0R wagon with the 3 litre H6. Served us well. Used it for work so drove it all over the country with no real issues although the auto would occasionally take longer to get out of first than I would have liked. Always at this one intersection too - really weird. Not a rocket low down but great on open road for passing etc. Fuel economy was pretty bad being full time 4wd. Even with diesel tax I'd say my Navara is half the fuel cost to run.

  6. Ok. Bit of a change of plan. Chaz the painter has been tied up with other work so not much movement on the car in the last month.

Obviously given me too much time to think because I'm now planning to change the colour. I liked the white but didn't love it so makes sense to throw a bit more time and money at it now than regret missing my chance later.

But now comes the real tough decision of picking a colour so any suggestions, feedback most welcome.

This is a colour I've really liked for a long time and if my interior wasn't grey/deep red I'd go for it. Unfortunately I think it'll look like a christmas tree. And the interior is pretty mint so don't really want to go down that track of changing it.

So, the other favourite for this era of car is a blue/gray. And after years of thinking "yeah, I like that" I can't seem to work out what car I've seen it on. But it looks a bit like this...

To me it's more of a 40s/early 50s flat colour rather than the brighter blues that came in 53ish.

Closest I've found is a '50 Windsor Blue which I think would look pretty cool, but could possibly get a little more gray mixed in plus be a little flatter rather than metallic.

    Decisions...

Anyone know of anything along those lines worth considering? Or anything left field?

Always thought this car would end up black but while I like black chevs, the few black Pontys I've seen haven't really done it for me. Too much contrast.

    Cheers.

  7. Too cool man, rad shape and good to hear its in good hands.

If it were me I wouldn't fuck around bagging it without a hefty notch, bridge and 4 link. It'll likely be as much work as getting a bit of extra low, and you've already done the open drive conversion ( Im assuming this was torque tube like the chevs)

itll be a matter of raising tunnel a bit, making small tunnels for upper 4 links bars and chopping the boot up for the bridge. If you don't it'll always piss you off that it doesn't sit right down. And you don't want to spend that money twice. And Im sure they've bagged jag front ends aswell.

Ive used Gambino 4 links twice now, just put one in my 38 and its good gear, cheap and goes straight in. But Murray and Chris know the drill on these and may have better options.

Hey man. Thanks for the suggestions, sorry didn't see this till now.

Yeah fair point. Will sort a plan of attack properly when I'm a bit closer to being able to afford the parts. The Ponty chassis is very different to the Chevs and I'm told there's a fair bit more kick up at the back. Also the boot has been raised for the Jag IRS cage that was in the original plan. No torque tube in these. But yeah, a lot of hassle to go to if it doesn't sit low enough. There's a few cars I know of running bags in Jag IFS (inc one of Murray's) and as I understand it, it's a fairly straight forward install there.

It'll look a heap better lower!

  8. You might be in for a shock. Just got mine quoted at a few places. No dings. About 2k per bumper was the cheapest.

Have heard a few bad stories about the Hamilton option.

Bumper Replacements in Onehunga, Auckland are where I'll spend my money I think.
