We've had a '97 disco for 10 yrs now.
It's been and still is a good reliable vehicle.. It's cost a belt tensioner, maf sensor, ignition barrel, a timer and air condenser fans, and fixing the rear electric windows, and the heated driver's seat no longer works.. apart from that it has been awesome and is nice to drive.
Only other concern is heavy fuel use of the v8, but on the ES model you get coil susp. 3500kg towing, leather, twin sunroofs, electric seats etc. for not much money down.
Personally, i wouldn't own a stinking polluting diesel powered vehicle.
Here's a nz new one similar to mine:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/land-rover/auction-1126573947.htm
Should be able to get that for 4 or less i reckon.
Nice.. are there many trade offs with getting the turbodeez? Or are just against the impact on the environment diesel has?
That one looks mint.
If I can't get a Range Rover Classic/P38A/Discovery that has been looked after for less than/around 4k then probably will get a 2.8TD Bighorn. I don't really like the look of a Safari and the comments about towing with an LWB Pajero doesn't help their cause either. A Landcruiser is out of my price range.

hey guys I'm considering buying a 1980-1999/2000 SUV that can tow a tandem axle with a sub 1500kg car on it safely. I'll also want to chuck fishing/camping gear and car parts in it, use as taxi etc.
Range Rover Classics caught my eye, but due to the high cost of them I've thought Discovery instead. But the possibly high maintenance costs are scary so I've thought a first gen Isuzu Bighorn would be a good idea, has the "look" and all but just wondering if the 2.8 Turbodiesel is up to scratch.

or maybe you can giz a hand with your fab talent zen master?

Yeah just there are really difficult brackets on either end that had like 3 seized bolts on. They're moulded into the fibreglass or the fibreglass is built round them. I'm planning on replacing it with a new front bumper later on, not too worried about looks right now. haha

Well I drilled it thinking that would help get it off. And then I just gave up and decided it would just be best to leave it on and paint. haha

Hola amigos,
It's been a while since I've been a part of the forum. Anyway I didn't seriously start learning how to drive til I had saved up enough and could afford my own car. Usually older than most. And my grandma used to taunt me about younger cousins getting their restricted and cars before me... Well now my Grandma's at her final resting place and I got a faster car than my cousins I got a few choice words for ya grandma!! jk I love my grandma but it's a shame I can't drive her round cos that'd be fun.
Anyway first car was an 04 Suzuki Swift, while that was allgood for being normal and safe and economical it was an automatic cos back then I thought who wants to be effing round with gears at give way signs.. I used to get paid lessons as a teenager 4-5 years before getting money for my own car yeah parents didnt trust me/yelled too much.. got rid of that car after owning for a year.
I bided my time between jobs and giving self employment a go I got a chance to rekindle my love for cars and eventually when I got the money I decided first priority would be a car. It had to be rear wheel driven manual and decently quick. With a modest budget of 3k I thought an MX-5 would be legit but I only really liked the British racing green NA that comes with tan leather interior nardi wood steering wheel and gear knob. I didn't want to pay 3 grand for any other mx-5. And my other favourite, the 190E (because the Evo Cossies just look the business and are mean as) only came in auto. I was thinking of going FWD and getting an Integra til I stumbled on the MR2 and decided that I'd check it out. At first I was intimidated being in the drivers seat and couldn't even drive manual so got it towed cross Auckland home. Til I got my first paid lesson from a guy who also was a car enthusiast, I was scared but his technical approach to driving was notches above any other instructor I got lessons from so I stuck with him, practiced driving at night, got restricted on black friday and the rest is history.
Also been thinking if it's old school or not... I think it is, but seeing as this car was made from like 1990 - 2000(?) with minor cosmetic changes i.e. wings/wheels/tail lights and better engines/suspension design over time, then it isn't. And IMO It was a design ahead of its time looks wise, whereas cars from the same year from like France or Australia were still stuck in the 80s looks wise. And also when you take into account the oldness of oldschool cars on here I think this section is more appropriate.
Since my ownership I've done:
- clean air filter
- change wipers and battery and gear knob shit
- oil and filter change
- coolant change
- cleaned general gunk and slime
- learnt how to detail, club member friend who details professionally taught me a few things
- bought a set of wheels that had tyres too big so learnt lesson
- painted front and rear bumper; had a crash with front, rear was peeling, albeit in the wrong shade, also learnt from mistakes with this
What needs to be done?
- tiny bits of rust**
- new rubber, rear tyres getting bald and will most likely be Potenzas on the wheels I'm getting from Japan through Alex / ML Racing**
- clutch is worn, not slipping (yet)**
- pro respray, paintwork all over to red but a shade I like, car has been keyed by some fuckboy**
- body kit, pro fitted**
- engine swap, blacktop from Altezza, 1uz-fe, 2gr-fe, 2zz-gze**
- headlight alignment and new bulbs**
- need missing indicators for safety**
Now for some pics.

admin pls kill this thread if its already been discussed.
Alrighty right now I'm paying $70.00 a month for AA third party fire and theft. They will lower my excess but I will stay paying heaps because I've got restricted, I signed up on learners and plan on knocking out full license on or around my 25th b'day in two months. Got restricted in Nov.
Obviously I don't want to be paying so much. I've asked them questions but it seems I need to see what the likes of Swann and Protecta Classic can offer. My cars almost 25 years old so hardly a classic but don't think such an expensive policy is right when a quick Trade Me insurance quote gives me $30 for more than what I get right now.
Help a brother in need
Thank you very much

Looks very nice. +1 for yellow Fords with brown interiors, a winning combo that is. Reminded me of Mighty Car Mod's Ford Meteor, interesting if Ford and Mazda had got together before 1981. Shit sorry now I'm calling your Mazda a Ford. The paint work is very good for its age and I suppose the centre caps were his babies because a lot of hoodlums have nothing better to do than thief em. Idk why. They must take them back to their friends and be like "hey g lets have a trade bo!"
EDIT: Wikipedia says they did in 1979. Duh!

Futher to my questions above.
Is it legal to grind off your firewall chassis number and have no chassis number ?
I rang a repair certifier about this and he went silent on the phone for a few seconds and started questioning me why.
In the end i got off the phone to him none the better.
Haven't read newer posts/replies but can tell you I've heard of one crook who made a living out of stealing them plates from written off/wrecked cars and then grafting them on to stolen cars then on-selling them as legitimate. There's probably been more who have done that over the years.

Hey guys not sure if this will work, majority may find it funny but me and the missus are on holiday round nz in a c23 Serena and we just broke down. Fitted a new 2nd hand distributor changed plugs did fluids etc on the 1200 dollar POS when we got it as it crapped out when first got it.
Called out AA after jump start and battery charge wouldn't work, older chap believed it was distributor as his battery test + adding fuel to air box test determined.
I've seen people on here have helped others in similar situations with parts etc, so if anyone is kind enough to please go to Wellington pickapart and get the distributor cap n rotor off the c23 Serena there and ship it would be a massive favour. Will pay of course.
