  1. So got home after work, decided to give a mate a call to see if he wanted to help me. cue 3 hours of ranting at the uselessness of Czech Auto-Electricians...

    ...

    anyway

    ...

got the engine to crank over without firing, but not from the ignition (which, as i discovered, was numbered, but not wired as the wiring diagram said :pukeright:). just jump-started the solenoid from the battery  :-)

also, discovered rust under the mats in the front, cue loud swearing, with answering swearing from irate/irritated neighbors...

anyway, todo list, as it stands:

    (urgent semi-urgent can-wait minor aesthetic)

    • remove spiders and rubbish, aswell as parts of the bush it was in for 6 months
    • find the rest of the rust (remove guards and check chassis rails, and remove the rest of the carpet)
    • source panel-steel (does anyone have any bonnets, boots, doors, guards they don't want? any make/model, just want them for the panel-steel)
    • cut out and replace rusted panel steel
    • sand out the surface rust and undercoat it
    • Replace the exhaust system
    • sort and lube the door hinges
    • remove and replace door-cards
    • sort the wiring (will redo loom myself when restored, that way i can actually make sense of it)
    • sort the ignition
    • panelbeat the dents out
    • drain and replace the oil
    • source the radiator leak (there was the equivalent of 8L of bottled water in the trunk, and the radiator was dry. make your own assumptions)
    • fix the aforementioned leak
    • fix the minor stuff (loose fittings etc)
    • get custom-made chrome grills, badges, and possibly other stuff
    • WILL ADD MORE AS MORE STUFF COMES TO LIGHT. WOULD LOVE OPINIONS :)

  3. i would rather not cannabilize  your period radio :o my plan uses the face of a retro radio from the period, some (ok more like 20-50...) custom 3D printed brackets, pins, knobs, etc, to transfer the commands from the period twin dials back to the modern headunit cleverly recessed back a good 5-10cm :) the volume dial will still be the volume dial, but the tuner dial will actually be a function selection knob: 'tuning' the dial will actually be sliding a cam or something similar back and forth, while pressing the tuner knob will press down the modern headunit buttons using a spring-loaded pin on the cam :)
Clever idea, do-able. and still looks retro, but with a MAJOR modern refit :D

Any particular models stick out in your minds? Deluxe models would look cool :)

  4. So as a little side project to be added to the skoda, I had a brilliant idea of how to use a retro radio but still a modern headunit (details in the build thread after plans are drawn up). If searched Google etc but I can't find much, so does anyone know what make or models of radio could have been fitted aftermarket to a nz registered car between 1970 and 1980?

  5. Thanks for the advice on the rust spots guys, ill have a look when i get a chance :)
as for the engine, i might know someone who can do stronger gaskets, as i really really want ti keep it as factory as possible :)

And as for having seen it on facebook, thats where i found it, and i fell in love with it (LOL last time i fell in love at first sight i ended really really badly so lets hope that this time is alot better. it should be, its a car and not a chick this time :D :D :D)
and as i have stated, i havn't made the swap yet as i have no tow car till next weekend. i can get a trailer no problem tho (Im in rangiora, its in cromwell...)

  6. So guys, thought I would announce it and make you jealous even though I have yet to pick it up :-) I just found a `74 Skoda S100, so I made a deal with the owner. Pics will follow in the next post, but current information I have discovered is as follows:

    Year: 1974

    Make: Skoda

    Model: S100

Owners: 3, two little old ladies and then a garage for 16 years

    Kilometers: a genuine 57,335km :-)

    Rego: lapsed
