Thought I may as well do an update on this thing, tore apart the new engine a few weeks ago and looks good internally, another one i suspect spun some rod bearings but thankfully no other damage.
Have acquired almost everything I need for stock rebuild except new piston rings ( if anyone knows where to find some please let me know), so once I get those and have done a valve job on the head it should all go back together quite quickly.
I now have shelfs full of parts I need to work through cleaning, polishing, painting, and or replacing. This weekend Ive manged to clean and paint the block and I painted exhaust manifold after sandblasting it at work. Its only a small achievement but it's got me amped for everything that comes next!
Cheers everyone

Putting on seat covers is a pig of a job! I have a new found respect for upholster-ers!
That hoop job looks tidy man, nice work100%!! Have a massive respect for upholster- ers. My first two attempts were horrid so I'm happy with this one now it's worked, I'm still tempted to get a professional to redo it as I think itll make the overall look more clean cut and not so janky but itll definitely do for now.

Been trying to chip away at this thing while on lockdown, started by finishing off the frame by welding in some gussets and tried to make it look original. Took the usual steps to get there.
Before
During
After
Once that was done I need to cover my seat. Took a couple of attempts to get something that worked, I'm still not sure how I feel about it as the vinyl I had is thick af and wasn't very malleable so there a creases where I don't want them. I think I did it with the right stuff and having had the practice now I think I could do a better job, but this still do until shops open again.
Put the bike back together and aside from repainting the tank and side covers I think it's done for now. We will see how wof goes after lockdown.

I like the green as well I dont regret choosing it. I found the colour at supercheap, I can't remember the brand but the were just mini rattle cans of what's meant to be touch up paint for cars, they had some pretty sick colour and shades.

A week or two ago I got my indicator mounts and seat stay done (just three tabs with holes in them) I cant weld but they should at least stay put.. need to lengthen the wires and get them reconnected later
Also got some time in the shed yesterday and was able to smash out shaping the seat
I had gotten some foam off a mate who's work had an upholstery department no longer in use. I also used many layers of old yoga matt to build up the dip in the middle of the seat.
Ruff cut it after the glue had dried and shaped it with the grinder and a flappy disk yesterday.
Pretty stoked I can move on to making a cover now, need to get the misses to teach me how to sew.
(Same mate also gave me a large roll of black vinyl intended for outdoor furniture so should last as a bike seat no problem)

Havnt been thinking too much about this car recently but even with family and shit getting in the way I'm still adamant im not going to get rid of her.
The other day I had seen on trade me another 4g52, the first one I had seen for sale in months and was actually on the right island. I happened to have some spare money at the time so purchased it.
All that was claimed in the listing was that it had sat for over 20yrs but still turned over.
That was good enough for me.
In any case it's a dam sight better than my last one and will be a much better candidate for a rebuild.
Nothing will probably happen with this straight away but I'll start collecting parts and making a plan of attack.
Cheers.

Cheers guys, I work in greerton so I'll give kass a call at lunch and have a yarn, and check out the warehouse on the way home.

Thinking of going shopping for some seat foam this week, would anyone be able to recommend places to check out? and also what to look for, looking for comfort and ease of shaping? Cheers.

Was able to get some time in the shed last week so got those extra layers of glass down on the pan. There's about 6 layers on with a mix of 200g and 300g matting so should be plenty strong enough.
Got out there today and cut it into to shape I wanted.
Ruff cut it first.
Final cut and sanded edges. Chose to have it roll over top only slightly so should hug the frame nicely even when the vinyl is on but leave most of the frame exposed . Also chose to go up the tank abit so itll have a nice transition into the seat.
And lastly I found I was able to reuse the original Suzuki seat tongue (I dont know what it's really called) to locate the front under the tank, slips in nicely.
Next job will be to add a tab at the back to lock it down and also two other tabs on the sides to attach the indicators. Then I can paint the frame and get on the hunt for some comfy foam to use

Long time no nothing. life and new born getting in the way but found some time over the break to sort some stuff out. Took this thing for a wof a while ago and the fella reckoned I had chopped "too much off". According to him and a few other people I talked to I need to have left at least 100mm of frame on after the shock mounts.
So abit butt hurt i knew had some options, scrap the bike, part it out, or weld on new rear hoop and change set up.
Seeing as ive given up on too many project in my past, option C is what I've gone for.
Progress is as follows.
Acquired rear hoop.
Made inner tube pieces for support.
Chopped hoop to preferred size.
Welded it all together.
Purchased fiberglass.
Wrapped bike in glad wrap.
Laid fiberglass.
And here we are. I always wanted to try make my own seat so that's what I'm going to try do, from the pan to upholstery. I ran out of resin so will have to pick up more and do a couple more layers when I get round do it, I will most likely weld in a support peice at the back too. but for now I'm happy with were I've gotten.

So after almost 3yrs sitting outisde uncovered I finally decided to crack into the old 4g52 that I fucked all those yrs ago to see what actually happened.
I only decided to do so as even though I have a different engine in the car now I was contemplating rebuilding it down the line so I can restore the car to its original form.
The motor is seized, and apon taking the head off things looked grim..
Metal in the sup didnt show signs of promise either.
And the nail in the coffin was the lack number3 rod bearing which explains the material found in the sump. The other bearings and the crankshaft looked below average aswell..
So from this point I have abit of thinking to do, along with new bearings allround, pistons, rings, possible re-sleeving, a valve job, crankshaft re-ground, a cam and all associated machining costs I'm not sure if it's going to be a worth while venture.. so if anyone has suggestions or knows where I can find another 4g52 please dont hesitate to let me know.
(I didnt take any photos after I took the sump off because my hands were covered in shit but i did get one of the rust and water in the cylinders, will get more later maybe. )
Cheers.

So I thought i better get this a wof so gave the bike a once over and found something a little sketchy, turns out I've been missing an engine mount so thought that might have been important to the wof guy. Opted out of paying $40 for kit and just made it. Cut template, made two of them out of scrap steel, painted it black got some bolts and job was done. Only other thing I found for was that the number plate light stopped working so have to sort that and will hopefully book wof some time this week.
Cheers.
(Yes my tank is still red underneath, couldnt be bothered going that hard when painting it.)
