  1. the oil pump tweak was more thinking out loud, thinking more oil would reduce the chance of it seizing at WOT. your gas reasoning sounds more sciencey, so go with that.

but definitely start with the needle i think, depending on its taper it could make a decent difference with just what adjustment you have available in the notches

what are the running symptoms like as it is?

  2. crankcase air leak, or any air leaks really (unless its huge) shouldnt make that much difference.

Needle should help anyway - i'm guessing you've still got two notches to drop?

is the replacement filter paper or foam? / have you oiled the foam?

ive seen carb airleaks around the top where the slide removes from if that gasket goes too.

if it runs well at that setting have you tried upping the oilpump setting to compensate?

  3. yeah lean. if not way lean. needs to be chocolate brown. id even check if its pumping oil

Was that a full WOT plug chop? id be a bit worried to WOT on that colour though.

What air filter / air box are you using?

drop the needle clip a notch at a time see if it browns up - otherwise bigger main jet. mixture screw and pilot dont usually come into effect anywhere past 1/2 to 3/4 throttle anyway

but im sure there'll be debate

  4. so this is disgusting, but interesting point in the ad about the rego - could mean you can just up the displacement and run on a car rego rather than the 50cc moped limit? but...does that means warrants? dunno.

also, rim-wise - could you lathe/make up adapters to suit say, a kart rim? more tyre choice/slam/slicks?? like bolt through one side to the existing PCD and the other side to the kart rim PCD?

  5. PS.

googling turned up these sj50 'mods'

There is a little plate between the exhaust header, and the engine, just loosen off the two exhaust bolts, and pull the little metal plate out, and she should be good for about 70kph with a 70kg person on it. This will invalidate any warranty on the bike, and possibly insurance, and cops will notice a 50cc scooter pulling 65 kmh.

Your scooter will probably have a rev limiter in the CDI unit, To remove this you find your CDI unit and it will have 5 wires - Two going to the ignition coil, Two going to the alternator power, The 5th one will go to a device in the engine which gives it a voltage depending on RPM, Cutting this wire will make it 0 volts and the CDI will not know to limit the revs. The extra RPM speed gained will get your top speed from 50ish to 70ish. A couple good mods for starters is iridium spark plug for improved throttle response and easier cold starting, light weight variator rollers to get you up to speed quicker, Heavy duty clutch springs will raise your rpm engage point to give you better launches and get you into power band sooner -- these are the cheap and easy to do mods. Other mods are removing your cold air box and replacing it with a pod filter but this will require a carburettor retune so leave this until you know what you're doing and ofcourse changing your exhaust and installing a performance CDI unit with more aggressive ignition timings. Then after all that to make good use of your improved torque you might install a high speed pulley which will increase your gearing ratios giving you a higher top speed. Check out scootling.co.nz for all this stuff, the dude down there can help you out with all of that.

I saw a matching one of these outside KFC Kilbirnie last night. Same colour and gold wheels. The nature of Wellington means you will ride past this dude on yours and have a joyful moment when you see each other.

  7. Electric is definitely an interesting project if you have the time to suss it all out. We have free electric charging stations here in hawkes bay which are an incentive too. Not too keen to drop 20k on a glorified kei car though just for free charging.

oldschool cars are actually the perfect conversion candidates as theyre mostly manual based systems rather than computers with power windows and steering etc.

the more manual the easier a home conversion with a forklift motor etc.
