  1. Sussed out mounting the box / motor all up, put it in but ended up squishing the heater core outlet - didn't think to put the heater hoses on before i put the engine / box in - dumbass.

Managed to just get them all on.

Also managed to whip off the factory front sway bar, castor arms/ brackets and install the cusco front sway bar that came with the car, with some new rubber mounts, blasted and painted the brackets - looks so much better in my opinion...

Also chucked on the new genuine smoked guard indicators, the new grill, blasted and painted and cleaned out the bonnet catch setup, going through the entire car putting brand new anodised nuts and bolts for extra prettiness...

The cusco cooling plate was scratched up to hell, so sandblasted and painted that black - then found out it must be for a levin? As it hits the trueno light motors by about 5mm each side.

Fuel tank has been wire brused down, and used some Krylon rust preventative stuff on it - gonna blast the straps back to bare metal, then just clear coat them like I did with the crossmember - really liking the bare metal colour..

Also trying to move the car off the hoist thats on the ground so I can pull the diff out, wire brush + paint that a nice black, install all the nolathane bushes that came with the car for the 4 arms in the back, and obviosuly blast / paint those...

  2. Ended up taking all the mounts / RWD parts off the GZE before whacking em on the Blacktop.

Bought a SQ kit ( again ) from Nic at NST.

Installed that, blasted the engine mounts / crossmember / front and rear bumper mounts - the fronts are PFL and one is odd, so doesn't really line up at all, made little aluminium adapters so its securely all mounted..

Ended up with a new Exedy clutch kit, new rocker cover gaskets, new oil pump, front and rear main seals, cam seals, some goo for a gasket for the sump..

Also ended up rebuilding the starter motor as it was seized up from sitting / moisture ( pic show's no solenoid as had three brand new ones at home and couldn't bring to work haha )

Also ended up giving the Alternator a blast / paint / new bearings, new slip ring and regulator at work ( did a cheeky and blasted the alternator mount, waterpump pulley and alternator adjusting bracket at work too )

  3.

Bought an AE86 off a friend..

    Trueno hatch..

Bit of a cursed car.. Pretty much my mate got shafted from a Chinese fella that got done for fraud in Auckland for Millions, and was boosting around in a GZE powered AE86 haha, then my mate's back yard was under 2 meters of water in the Green Bay floods in 2017. Two of his mates ripped him off and nicked parts when it was being panel beated, then the painted robbed him too..

    Then I bought it...

    1985 Facelift Ae86 Trueno..

Came fully stripped after a full panel and paint ( paint is really really half ass'd ) and a few other goodies..

Since owning it, have found out the GZE was beyond hori and missing so much stuff, so had to buy an AE111 for a blacktop that I could see running/ driving..

I have the ability to use a hot wash / sand blaster / SHOT blaster at work, holy hell, it makes things look wonderful...

Here's a few things i've done in the 3 weeks i've owned it...

Put all panels on it, aligned the lights etc..

Found out literally EVERY second bolt has had the head snapped off which is a royal pain..

The guy who cut out all the rust welded over the holes for lights, all teh bloody holes for the rear side windows etc..

Have also bought some 3 piece Arrow wheels from trademe, $550 with brand new tyres which I thought was a steal, gonna look at painting the centers...

It also came with side skirts, aftermarket rear bumper, TRD spoiler and a roof spoiler which i've yet to put on obviously..

    You dissing my hood? lol

Fastest rising property prices in Auckland over the last 3 years, and the most old school cars per capita (based on what I see walking round my end of Ranui).

    Maaaaaaaaayte.

Yeah thats probably true, in my warehouse compound there's 7 old school cars within 50meters? Plus the entire rest of Airdrie drive. Hahaha.

  5. Still looks 10x better than half the dents in all of my cars...

And probably 100x better than when I try fix said dents with some Supercheap auto bog.

I just read this now and was thinking, fuck dude you're gonna have a sweet convertible.. Sorry, but not sorry, was kind of dissappointed at the pics...

  6. Those ones are like trying to weld with mud compared to their true European machines... They're EWM machines pretty much do the welding for you - some of them let you arc weld up int 40cm deep water haha they're freaking sweet.

However, be expecting to fork out 2.5k+ for a 160amp arc welder for one of those, and around 7-8k for a Tig that'll do ally XD - will seriously change your life and you'd never want to go back to a 'basic' machine again.

PS When I say the cheaper 'value' range of their machines are Chinese, they're actually assembled all over Asia, but under BOC/ Linde Groups German eye - they're decent if you follow the warranty rules/ dont fiddle with them/ ACTUALLY service & maintain the machine properly.

  7. If you want a Basic MIG that you can't really fuck up: https://www.boc.co.nz/shop/en/nz/smootharc-mig-180 thats cheap - they're making like $60 selling you those hahah.

IF you want a multi function machine ( ie mig + tig + arc ) get the Multi 175 process also on sale - however, don't be a noob and fall for the fact it can apparently weld aluminium, as BOC is a loud of shit and it ain't worth the frustration / stress / potential throwing the machine through someone's window to set up the mig for 1-2mm alloy. - https://www.boc.co.nz/shop/en/nz/boc-smootharc-multiprocess-175-welder

Both of these will weld up to 6mm comfortably - they will do thicker stuff, but your duty cycle drops horrendously.

The migs in both of those are effectively the same, you just get a slightly cheaper torch with the  multi process ( well use too ) the tig torch is less than average but usable.

    Reg's are included etc.

These are Chinese machines, but hey. For a homer garage, they're sweet. I've sold 100's of those when I was working at BOC and bugger all came back.

HOWEVER if you want to TIG I couldn't recommend this machine more:

    https://www.boc.co.nz/shop/en/nz/boc-smootharc-185-hf-dc-tig-welder-boc185acdc-fc-p

Now, if you go into BOC and ask for this - get them to throw in the footpedal for free. ALSO haggle the fuck out of it and say that your uncles cousins sister bought one at XMas time for $1100-1200 + GST and they'll knock down the price hahah.

THESE ARE AN AMAZING VALUE FOR MONEY.

We have one at my new work, and I was always under the mindset that anything about 4mm thick alloy they were utter shit. I'm now welding 12-16mm thick alloy plates to 8-10mm thick alloy housings for starter motors and what not. SURE I wouldn't weld with those thicknesses all day, but it can definetly weld thicker than they say.

And if you really want the mac daddy mig ask about the 275C mig welder, and literally just beat the sh it out of the price. They were selling those late last year for $1200+ GST.

OH, and if you want a hook up on how to get cheaper rental bottles for argon from them, flick me a message.

  8. YOu want to tig? or mig? or you want a multifunction welder?

You want to do strictly stainless/ steel? OR want Alloy as well?

If tig, you want a foot pedal?

If mig, do you want a full sized machine for the big spools / massive thickness? Or do you want something more portable?

    Whats your budget?

  9. I havn't updated this for a long time...

    Alot has changed...

So the SR20 is running - slowly getting better, still isn't as great as I thought it would be ( slower than the 16V 4A i've got in TE31 )

Did some extremely hori wiring up of some fans before the Annual Nostalgic meet.

Brendan at niteparts installed the Tomei 270 procams I bought, and uprated valve springs.

Runs a Go fast bits light weight underdriven crank pulley and now it isn't running so rich that its fouling and stuffing spark plugs in less than 100k's...

Had my wheels pulled off, stripped and powder coated again.

Have ground down my cam cover and am going to shock blast it at work...

Am trying to retrofit a spoiler from the 80's onto it, not having much luck at the moment, have tried S13 and 86 ones... They could be used - but would have to cut up so much of the AE86 spoiler it wouldn't be worth my time...

Still got a lightweight flywheel ( weighs 5kg ) to install, and have started...

  10. Ewm clearance machine's tell me more please?

I stopped working there 8 weeks ago now, but I did know before I left they had 20million worth of stock to clearance out.

Including welders/ safety gear/ plasma cutters/ just random shit.

I know there was some EWM machines up for sale, think one was down to just under 5k from 16k... Best to go in there and just ask - don't ring the call center as I don't think they had the clearance list ( you'll have to ask someone behind the desk to see whats on clearance as all the stock is scattered around the country and in their logistics center in Onehunga )

It'll also only be to the end of December if I recall.

  11. Those ones there actually come with the cheaper torches - not the one I believe flyingbrick is talking about. Still alright but not the optimal.

Personally, if you're planning on just using DC tig buy the 185DC or if wanting to do thin gauge ally - currently use one where I work ( use to work at BOC ) the 185ACDC/FC aren't overly bad for the money - just wait till they're on sale or go haggle with them. You'd be better off...

The pricing on the 175multi use to always confuse me - as to why / how they managed to make three processes into one machine and sell it a fair bit cheaper than their standalone's. In saying that, the almost two years I worked there I think I had maybe 2 or 3 of these machines returned for warranty basis/ repairs. But yes, you do actually get the cheaper torch in comparison to the BOC185ACDC/FC and BOC185DC.

The multi also say's you can mig weld extremely thin guage aluminium - I don't know why they put this there as its almost impossible to set up for a half decent aluminium weld and its not really worth the time to set it up.

Just remember these ones are actually chinese made, they're probably better quality than the ones off trademe etc - but if you really want a sweet welder go look at their EWM clearance machines - their truly something else and can usually score them heavily discounted when clearanced/ over stocked.

  12. I've had a quick search through this thread.

Whats teh go with 'bolt on flares'

Do you only need a cert if you have to cut the original inner guards?

Do you have to have the newly cut inner/ outter guards welded together? - does this have to be done by a certified welder/ panel shop?

would you have to fill in the gap between the flare and the original body line with something?

After you cut the guards - how does this affect the cert process?

I'm trying to run 9" wid=e wheels on a aa60 carina on the back.

    Cheers

  13. If you were getting NOS from us at BOC for $600 you were getting a sweet deal...

Just looked it up for you ( you will need a license to buy from us - ie a legit workshop etc )

    $2051 + GST.

That's for a "G" size cylinder which is our large ones...

there is a chap over in East Tamaki that does fills ( he buy's our cylinders and then fills smaller ones for bikes etc ) that might be the best way about it, as obviously you'd be charged for rental on that G which is over $20 a month as well.
