  1. Oh, he was raised by a Mormon family. It quotes him saying as an adult he converted to Christianity, but yeah, most of his life he was Mormon (and all the Mormons I know are genuinely nice people!).

Yeah... I guess for a generation of teens/young adults (for better or worse) he and his bright orange Supra were what sparked the initial interest in performance cars for the vast majority of them. Even though the movies don't make much sense, it was that absurdness (absurdness?) of the initial movie that caught the eye/imagination of so many people and branched out from there. I think his genuine interest in cars and the closeness of the cast keeps the appeal for the franchise alive. A lot of us have just always loved cars anyway, but it's just the way it has gone and Paul Walker's character in that initial movie was probably the biggest influence behind igniting most kids passion for cars and if asked the question, many of them would start with "Watching Brian Spilner...".

I don't know if any of that made sense, but it's the only way I could explain why I think he was so popular anyway!

  2. nailed it!  he wasn't a race car driver. he was an ACTOR: some one who pretends to do shit! he did no major favours for automotive culture in my opinion no major loss really

    no offence!

but yeah f&f movies kinda sucked balls

    end rant!

To be fair though, he owned and ran a performance car workshop and also used to race his Porsche GT3 most weekends. He was a genuine car enthusiast. Most things he did were for charities and helping others out (the Mormon way I guess!), the movies were just a way for him to be able to afford to have the time to go overseas and locally, promoting and donating to his charities.

Average video, but you get the idea:

...and yeah, referring to the cruise, it probably isn't going to end well.

  3. Oh, I will definitely be going after all costs and you and I know the car was immaculate prior to the incident, so I'll be able to point out exactly what needs repairing/replacing and following this every step of the way! I'm getting them to drop the diffs and gearbox too, just to make sure everything's still alright, even though like you say Ragtop, these cars can take a decent punishing. Do it once, do it right! They can have the car for as long as it takes. :)

  4. The motel manager spotted it in their carpark after the alert was issued - I'm looking forward to seeing how long the car was there once security footage comes back. Just in case there wasn't enough evidence against him, he would've walked out of the carpark after leaving it there right in front of the security cameras (probably did anyway).

  5. Thanks guys, I'm glad it'll be back home soon too. The process of getting everything checked, re-paint what needs painting and a full groom isn't going to be fun though. New locks will be Ex Japan and take 3 weeks for them alone. Can't complain as insurance are being pretty good about it all at the moment.

The plates are mine, so I just get them remade for $17.80 and wait 2-3 working days :) don't really know if I want to have them on for a while though. The car was found in the underground carpark of Aristotles Motel on Wairau Valley Road (opposite the Burger King at the roundabout).
