  1. Drain oil and see how its looks

Maybe whip the sump and bearing caps off to see how the bearings look is probably a good idea and would only take 10 mins/same with the rocker covers to see if its nice and clean

He's said he'll pull rocker cover off for me.  I never though of doing that.  I'm taking some basic tools with me to go look, so pulling the bottom off will be an option.

  2. Buying a S14 SR20DET tomorrow.  Motor is out of the car and has been on a shelf for 6 months.

Anyone know what to look out for?  I've been around Silvia's and SR's for a while, but don't know what you can check if anything, without being able to do a compression test.

I am getting a start-up guarantee and I can compression test it once I get it home and pull the old motor out of the car.  I just don't have the bits to do it first.

I've been told it has been stored with oil in it, but that's most likely only the standard amount.

I'm open to any suggestions on what to check.

  3. Drive-shaft safety loops 2.5(8)

A front-engine, rear-wheel drive low volume vehicle that has undergone an engine conversion, or has had its factory-fitted engine significantly modified, such that a significant increase in power or torque has resulted, must be fitted with an effective 360-degree front drive-shaft loop, mounted within 150 mm rearward of each front drive-shaft universal.

So one hoop per piece, within 150mm of the front universal on that piece.

  4. Apart from BrockOdaves story above, I have never ever ever heard any good stories about state.

I had a good experience with state.  Had full cover on a car that was financed.  My ex wrote it off by rear-ending another car.  We called a local tow company through work to organise the tow, then told them to charge through to state and gave them a case number.  Phoned State with a police report number, and sent them photos I took myself.  (Car was towed to work.)

Was confirmed written off within 24 hours.  And paid out within a week.   This may have been because it was financed with UDC though?

  5. Sweet thanks for that. Any implications that would tell you not to put them on Yowzer?

I'd just double check the use of aluminium spacers with steel wheels.  They generally don't go together too well.  This may not matter, but just a thought.

  6. try asking for FJ20et engine parts.

or even gazelle parts, "we do spark plugs" is the usual answer...

also, no its not a supra.

I know dem feels but for anything s12 related.

    It's also not an 86.

Repco know me quite well now, but when I first started going in there asking for bits for the S12 it was always a "whats the rego" so i'd say it won't help, and it's had an engine swap.  "do you know a rego of a car with the same motor" so i give them my old s14's rego...

Now I walk in there, "can i have ___ catalogue" they give it to me, and i flick through, find what I want and price it up/order it/buy it whatever.

I can now find stuff faster in there catalogues than they can in there computers.  (although the current staff at my normal are pretty on to it compared to who used to be there)

  7. What kind of car?

Get some of this from BNT.

    red_lightweight_shockproof.jpg

Not cheap, but is awesome for old syncros

    This. Stuff. Is. The. Best.

Have used it multiple times.  It's expensive, but I wouldn't consider anything else now.

  8. Oops it should say I just don't want repco branded stuff. I have held off buying much impact stuff because I don't have a good compressor but once I get one I want to get some reasonable air tools and impact bits, what's s good air tool brand?

    Yeah I gathered that.

Ingersoll Rand for impact guns.  I can't comment on any other brands as I don't use them.  We've got eight 3/4" ones at work and three 1/2" ones.  We won't consider anything else.

For our 3/4" impact sockets we use Koken.

For our 1/2" sockets we use Repco, but we use these rarely so couldn't justify spending more on them.  My current Repco set has lasted me two years so far.

I work in a commercial tyre shop, so these are being used on wheel nuts almost hourly.

  9. You know, I respect what you are saying but I just want repxo branded tools. At my local trade zone they have a wall of koken sockets but no sets which annoys me a lot

Koken is definitely my preference also.  I use 3/4" impact sockets on a daily basis and they wear out and go round before the break.  I can't afford that sort of thing for myself though :/

  10. But really...

It's really hard finding a set of extended sockets to buy, either they come with big kits or you have to buy them individually, anything out there?

Repco have 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" extended socket sets on the shelf.  Repco branded, similar quality to Powerbuilt, but the warranty stuff is soooo much easier.

  11. Just run the correct tire size and get over it?

I was meaning from a selling perspective.  I sold a few sets because they were able to be used on slightly wider rims than other brands.

My tyres and rims on the S12 are proper, but I don't really like the stretched tyre look so never went for it.

  12. Just a follow up on the Falken tyre thing.

OTR are a distributor yes, however, I've just had the Falken pattern digest show up with the approved rims inside of it.

The book is produced by Sumitomo Rubber Industries, in Japan, OTR are only playing the messenger.  (Sumitomo produces Falken.)

215/40R17 FK452 is now only valid up to 8.5" rim.

195/45R14 ZE912 is now only valid up to a 7.5" rim.

    This sucks.

  13. Michelin XM2's would probably be one of the best tyres in that size, but at $150ish a pop, they're expensive.

If you stick to a decent brand, you can't really go wrong, the size is more or less an economy spec one anyway. Michelin, Goodyear, Bridgestone (nb: not Firestone), Dunlop, Continental etc.

I wouldn't recommend the GT Radial VP1.  While they were really nice to drive on, they didn't do the mileage I expected of them.   (At less than $90 each though I couldn't go wrong.)

At work I normally sell a tyre called a Deestone R201, I've had good feedback on them, but haven't driven on them myself.

  14. I've run Michelin Pilot Sport 3's before and have to say they've been the best road tyre that I've driven on. You may be able to pick those up for around $1000. (I know I could sell them for that)

I currently have T1Rs on the s12 but I haven't had a chance to test them properly.

  15. Also to bust a popular myth, your mods don't make you uninsurable either, and not having a WOF at the time of an accident doesn't mean you automatically won't be covered for it if it doesn't factor into the cause of the accident.

This can't be a myth.  When I spoke to AA about getting insurance on my S12.  Whoever I spoke to asked about it being modified. Of course I said yes.  I started running through the list and when I got to about the fourth item... The LSD Hilux axle, the person on the phone said 'Sorry, we won't insure your car.'  I already had contents and another car insurance covered with them.

I agree with the second part though, my ex crashed my car that had no WoF or Reg, because it was in a fit state for road use prior to the accident, they paid out. That was with State though.

  16. Non-turbo RWD SR's have a dizzy on them.

S13 SR and S14 SR 's have different head designs.  S14/S15 uses a low port manifold and S13 uses a high port manifold.  Intake manifolds are not cross compatible, so I don't think the manifold you've got will bolt on.

I doubt VCT will work very well with a carb conversion, but you can unplug it and it won't do anything (nor effect it's standard performance)
