she has got abit of rust, am having to do an inner and outer wheel arch sections on the drivers side, both sills, both bottom sections in rear guards, a few patches in the left handside rear wheel arch, and about 10-15 small to medium patches in the rest on the car. but overall not to bad, just waiting for the diff to come back from the shop. am fitting an LSD to a xy housing, should be fun.

some pics of the t5 gearbox for the wagon, used a single rail bellhousing, converted to hydraulic slave cylinder using the fork and pivot from the standard three speed. bit of welding and grinding was about all it took, will make the hole were the fork goes smaller to suit the original three speed fork boot, tidy up the welds by blending into the casting, a nice coat of paint and nobody will ever know what was done. am trying to find a ea-eb manual gearbox crossmember to chop up but am not having much luck, so anyone in nz has one then let me know. still waiting for the diff to come back, once the box is in the next job is to fit the new front end( xf discs callipers etc)

Finished the bellhousing yesterday, all nicely painted and welds blended in, looks real good, thought I would go straight out to the shed and see how it fits. being the good fitter I am, thought I would double check that the spigot bear was the right size, there I found problems, first the bearing had fallen out, must of happened when pulling out the old gearbox, no problem can put that back in, then for some reason I thought the clutch plate was going to be the same as the three speed one, wrong there too, was not going home without seeing how it looked, so without the clutch fitted on went the box, as I needed to measure the amount the gearbox cross member was to be set back, 75mm was the number I got, have all but given up on the overpriced wreckers for a ea/eb crossmember, so am going to make/mod my own. Have see on this site how other people have done theirs, am going to copy but try and improve the design somewhat. still no word from the diff shop, should have sent it earlier, what clutch plates do other people use?? got a price for a carbon kevlar 240mm plate today $350, abit too much for me.

Well still no diff!! so thought I would make a start on the new 2.5†exhaust, after work yesterday went to the local steel wholesaler, too cut a long story short was given the wrong size. instead of 63.5mm, was given 60.2mm and as I got it cut in half to fit in me Mazda work hack sedan, got all the way home and thought I would see how the pipe fitted the muffler, shit way too loose!! took the morning off as this was playing on my mind, “well sir we cannot take it back as it is cut†so in the car went the correct size. So my cheap exhaust just cost $65 more than it should have.

Costs so far: Flowmaster muffler $102, pipe $126, 63.5mm 180 degree mandrel bends x2 $ 72,

well got the diff back on friday last week, bolted it in on saturday, because I changed to a xy housing the xw u-bolts were to narrow, got some more from a mate and only had to weld up the holes in the u-shaped brakets and redrill. so diff is a BW xy housing with a xf LSD and 3.45:1 gears, should work well with the 5 speed, next job is to fit bilstein shocks and rear sway bar. then bring it home and attack that rust, which is worse than I thought, going to most likely bring in a whole lot of repair sections from oz, still plan to have it on the road for christmas.

going to give this thing the big push tomorrow, have got to get it home to do the rust, being trying to find some good rear quarter panels, thinking about unpicking the whole right hand rear quarter panel and stitching new one on. looks to be the only way to go, plus the two new sills, and theres some big rust holes in the back lower panel under the tailgate, any ideas on a colour?? am thinking a dark charcoal with a orange stripe. or a silver with orange stripe. the most votes I get then that is what it will be done in.

Well finally got the gear box cross member finished, if anyone has does this conversion on a xw they will know that the handbrake cable runs through the cross member and because the T5 mount is further back that mucks up the handbrake lever, but with so clever thinking all was fixed, have also been working on the throttle cable and linkage for the cable end, again not a straight forward job, as there is not enough room between the carb and the shock tower to use one of those fancy throttle brackets, the ones that run down the side picking up the two side bolts, went to my local speedshop he had nothing to do the job, so again I made my own, works shit hot. So is all ready to come home for the rust to be done,

ok so this is were I am at, run out of co2 on the same day as the place I get it from had a lunch time christmas piss up, so no gas till the 7th jan. started cutting out all that extra steel that had been put in the front, what a cunt of a job cutted that out, got some damage to the two sections that the radius rods bolt to, boged over the rear quarter panels coming up good.

Posted 10 February 2013 - 09:06 AM

been a little while since I updated this build, have not done much, did a bit of boging on the rear qarters. Having to replace the front chassis crossmember, is just too far gone from rust, got one out of a crashed xy sedan from a guy down the south island, will try get that in the next few weeks, after that its just the sills and she will be rust free. I was going to paint it but with all the work coming up it is cheaper for me to pay a shop to do it. going to try get a bit of a deal with them as I will have three cars to paint this year all going well. as long as I get my side of the builds done. 004_zpsf02edb94.jpg 003_zpse6f1c141.jpg006_zps615bd423.jpg005_zps13039143.jpg007_zpsec1deba8.jpg

well did fuck all last night on the wagon , got talked into hitting the piss, in that pissed state we ripped the head off the crossflow,

cylinders look good, this is the first crossflow I have had the head off, piston dish to me looked small at 71mm at the top and 55mm at the bottom and about 4,5mm deep. from that can anyone tell me if it sounds like a low comp piston or not, also did the heads have different combustion chamber volumes in the head, if so can that be taken from any number on the head?? were is that number on the head, what would that number start with ??

Posted 28 April 2013 - 04:33 PM

well been awhile here too, got the head off cam out, have order a new camshaft and a roll master timing set, will fit some bigger spring and put it back together, had a cunt of a time getting the balacer off. key on the crank shaft were the cam sproket goes was fucked, camshaft/lifter were rooted. be interesting to see how she goes. still panel beating the body, got one sill on. also got a secondhand sun visor coming, would have brought new but those guys on your ebay would not send to nz, they should send them as i know lots of people who would buy, getting there .

your not wrong about the work, thats what happens when you buy a car without looking at it from a young guy who knew nothing about these models, was told it had minnor rust, but was still cheaper than any other xw/y at the time. is the last big rust job i do for a while so that is one good thing, just the amount of time i have spent on this i could have done the other two sitting in the shed. think i have broken its back, got the cam being ground tomorrow and have ordered the timming chain, so will have it running again soon. plan to post the vid of the cam being bed in.

well what project, being too many years.  today it many go into primer.  got to get err done.  whole drive train is changing. out with to six and in with some cubes.

Posted 16 February 2015 - 10:24 PM

looked so good in the first photos, wish I had just done one bit at a time. the thing has been a major project. Four years and still not even in paint!!  But have changed my mind on the whole driveline, suspension everthing is coming out. bit of a shame as i have poured a bit into that six. will post a vid of that running before i try to sell it.

Posted 16 February 2015 - 11:07 PM

have gone too far with this now to turn back, sold the diff off about 9 months ago. which is a shame cos i need it for another car.  just got to put the hours in on the body to get it finished. is mostly in primer. just blocking it back as we speak.  have the paint which is like the green in the pics of the xy sedan. going to paint it myself. but before that will rip out that crossflow and box for something alot bigger. be happy to get my money back for the intake, cam, roller rockers etc. not to sure if it will be manual or auto yet, the manual i have with the engine i have in mind would need a remote clutch master cylinder, which is a hassle.

Posted 04 April 2015 - 09:39 PM

all righty then back into this piece of shit,  have 10 weeks to finish it ready for the winter drag series at fram autolite dragway in meremere auckland,  can i do it?  hell no err yes. not much to do- paint it, build a engine, notch the front towers, put it back together, get a cert

have sold the cross flow engine,  will keep the T5 as a spare for the xf ute, diff is long gone.

let the work begin,

It sounds like an episode of american hotrod mate!

oh this is real mate, no tv bullshit here, just me and the cat.

well have been working about 4 hours a night since the last update and looks like i have gone backwards.  really is the body were most of the work is still left to do,  emailed a young car painter down the road from were i work to see if he was interested in painting the wagon,  outlined what was wanting from him and what products were being used on the car,  have not got a reply yet, could have put him off i think.  he is going to paint it just does not know it yet.

also emailed the company that i get my pacemaker headers from and was told 8 weeks and $1230 for a set of 2" cleveland headers. cant wait that long so looks like will be making my own.   ,weather is turning to shit here for the rest of the week so may not be able to do much priming, still got to pull the crossflow out for the new owner.  got a bit of cutting and welding do  in the engine bay, about time for a new vid i think??

heres a few pics of the towers welded in, plus a few of the dummy engine in place for mockup of parts etc. at the moment the engine has no sump bolted on, next step is to fit one to see if that clears the rack. my plan was to chop up a new set of pacemaker headers but they look like they may hit the rack when fitted. so if that is the case then will make my own 2" headers to suit.  lots of fun not. not to sure if the ram will stay??  think it is abit much?? diff is also in, ended up going with a 3.7 tru trac. 342_zpshg3ik7yw.jpg

will get some pictures of the asked for "460 porn" over the weekend,  in the  mean time here is some of the suspension, brakes and steering components that are going in, needed to fit the rack to see if it would clear the trans. which it will. may need to lift engine back out and fit a sump just be sure that it will also clear,  still not to sure what to do with the headers, the xr-y pacemaker 4-1  will be the easiest to fit, but just don't really look right,  sort  of too close to the block not really taking advantage of the big notch i cut.  so could be some custom 2" ones being made.

done  a bit on the old wagon over the weekend, got the front suspension bolted in. the new towers seemed to  weight, very stiff. not too sure if the shocks on these struts are adjustable. are most likely  one of the first sets that RRS released.  got them second hand. anyway still not sure what to do with the exhaust headers, dont really want to chop up my 1 7/8 pacemaker headers. being thinking about trying to find some BB chev ones and chop them up or even make my own. so being doing a lot of thinking/drinking and maybe this build needs to go a bit more extreme. so am off to the main workshop to get some bits. any guess's what i will come back with??

have started getting the 460 ready for assembly, all cleaned,  this engine  was in my xw sedan and would say it had only 30 hours running max since being rebuild,  so the bores are mint, is just getting new bearings. stronger con rods and flat top pistons,  turbo was just a dream,

Right done very little on this project for a while now, work has been full on,   after dicking around trying to fit the cleveland  headers past the steering rack i have decided to bite the bullet and make my own stainless headers. is going to work out about the same to make as carbon ones and have them HPC coated.  so bought $250 worth of 304 bends after work on Friday. which i would say is about 1/2 of what i will need. going to have to get some new flanges cut as the ones i have are carbon and don't fit very good.  will do a drawing and send over the road for laser cutting.   still dragging my feet on the body work, just don't enjoy it so just do little bits then get side tracked.  At least i got the starter motor problem fixed, had to get a new 2 kw  adjustable position unit as ever starter i had would not clear that fucken steering rack. am hoping my sump will also clear as that is not fitted to the block yet.  still not started putting the engine back together yet, but not going tunnel ram anymore just too high and harder to get a cert, plus if it gets a cert with it fitted i need it fitted ever time i go for a WOF. which is a bullshit rule here in New Zealand.  got the same problem with my xf ute cert plates states 14" rims and i run 18" on it 99% of the time. so ever 6 months i convert it back to what it says on the plate then go home and change it all back again. not a big deal but just a pain.  anyway wagon is getting there just very slowly.

been doing a bit on this project this week, fitted guards and made new mounting points at bottom near sill,  fitted grill to make sure it would fit etc, got some more exhaust flanges, ordered some new mufflers,  trial fitting center console and shiftier. will start on headers this weekend

bit of a update on this thing-

back on the body work again, epoxy primed the body again then have sprayed the worst areas with evercoat feather fill, block sanding that back and is not looking too bad, looking like the roof and rear quarters will need a few more coats. plan is to try find a painter that will put the top coat on for me, if not will have a go myself.

  IMG_1015_zpsgptdwcdu.jpg

also did not have much on at work this week so played around with some fab work on my headers,  flanges come up not bad,  will make the collector and most likely all the exhaust right to the back, have all that fixed in place then bridge from flange down to collector, but that could change,

update for those interested=

took this week off work as we have nothing on, so have been hitting the body work HARD,  is coming along not too bad. have been using  "EVERCOAT FEATHER FILL" and its the best!! really gets the panels nice and straight.   still not sure if i will paint it myself, have asked a couple of shops if they would topcoat her and was very surprised that they were not interested. would have to buy a gun if i do it.
