Guest sr20Escort
Discussion http://oldschool.co....ort-discussion/ Found this old girl looking a little sad earlier this year, with intentions to clean her up and use as my daily driver and the odd burn around the track. Inevitably I decided her 1.3L Kent wasn't going to cut it, so I decided for a student budget project an sr20de was the way to go (sorry Ford enthusiasts). Not gonna be a quick build cuz im in my final year highschool, but will find the time somewhere! Stripped out. Not a good start when I put my fist through the c pillar, so began the rust repairs First ever patch-up, little ugly but pretty stoked: Then started on the chassis roller, decided I didnt want to spend my evenings getting old mud and underbody paint in my eyes. Thanks to srEsky, whom I copied the idea from. Cheers mate! Got the box section for 4 bucks a metre, it's all disused pallet racking from a warehouse in Otara. Still needs some backward braces but will work a treat when done. Also picked up the s14 sr20de 130k on it. Came with gearbox, radiator (which doesn't fit so s14 radiator for sale), ecu/loom, electric fan, fuel pump, clutch master/slave and a few more bits and pieces for $920. Don't want to call that a bargain until I find out if the motor is a boat anchor or not! 1300 kent compared to sr20 test fit: It's hanging on a trolley mounted cable hoist running along an i beam..yet to pull the ceiling down Chopped out the tranny tunnel to hang it accurately: Then got started on the gearbox X member. The design was over-complicated to begin with, and ended up looking a piece of abstract art, did the job. Early stages: Space to play with in front of the engine for radiator and fan looks like a lot but because of the angle of the engine, the bottom of the main pulley protrudes quite a bit. Will probably mount two small electric fans to the radiator to miss the pulley but other suggestions would be appreciated. Most likely will use a bmw radiator off a 3 or 5 series as by the looks of my e36 the inlet and outlet pipes a very similar to that in positioning of the engine, and will fit more easily. Pic of space: Can't do any more work on gearbox or engine mounts at the moment as for some reason the gas place refilling the mig bottle sent it to hamilton and is due back in 10 working days... so in the mean time have been researching and sourcing parts for a bias pedal box and brake conversions. Not fully decided yet as the budget is already stretched past its yield point, but have come to two options for the front. 1) Volvo brake conversion, 4 pot calipers with e30 vented disks (if i can find some mid 80's calipers from the 200 series to take vented disks around here, common upgrade in the UK). 2) Stick with the M16 calipers and just fit a spacing kit with vented discs. For the rear thinking of fitting r32 skyline rear calipers, or if I go with the volvo fronts I could use the M16's on the back just with a large bore master cylinder on the bias setup and biased to the front a lot to account for the power. Keen on any advice/comments/questions as I'm new to this world
Guest sr20Escort
Quick update, picked up some Bilstein capri 2.8i coilovers with 200lb springs for cheap. If anyone knows where I can get wheel bearing kits in NZ for mk2 capri gimme a shout. Also got some repair panels from palmside to assist in the rust repairs The front brakes I decided to go for are 4 pot calipers from an '82 Volvo 244, they are very similar to the m16 calipers and are pretty much bolt on except for requiring slight slotting (metric hole spacing as opposed to imperial on the escort). Main difference is the much larger brake pads and ofcource being 4 pot, but also have two fluid inlets which ill probs join together by milling up a brass manifold thing with banjo fittings. Left: Volvo / Right: M16 Almost finished the gearbox x member, did a test bolt up before welding the final reinforcing tube on the underside, sits perfectly Definitely not going anywhere either.
sr20Escort
Haven't gotten much done lately because of midyear exams, but fab'd up the engine mounts from scrap metal to fit a Nolathane bush kit I had and modifying the sr20 engine mounts My BBS RS replica's arrived! 15x8 on 195/55r15s at the moment. Will probably go for wider tyres when I get on the road
sr20Escort
Getting stuff done slowly but surely, thoughts on this fitment? Got adjusties on the front so heights not an issue, just need to figure out the thickness of adapters i gotta make! Engine hoist - le gone Gave the tranny tunnel a quick crack, rest of it will be done in one sheet hopefully
