Apparantly came from France. Bodys way more fucked than the seller lets on. Rear guards basically made from bog.
Jacques brought it, then returned it because it was that bad.
Those door swage lines that don’t normally appear just screams that this thing is a complete pos, it needs to be be blasted first so you know what you are dealing with. I don’t think people appreciate how much tin work and time and money is needed in all these thick enamel covered rotten uncomplied lemons being imported from Europe, SA and Indonesia. (Speaking from experience).

Recently moved to Christchurch from North Island and struggling to find any panel beater or rust repair person to work on my car for me. Wife wants it gone as she thinks it’s a rusty lemon but I would like to retain it. I bought it off pictures rather than inspecting in person. They are getting harder and harder to find so am worried once it gone it’s gone and my 1300 journey will be over. It’s got rust in doors and parcel tray from a leaking rear window seal and hacked 6x9s. Which the South African vendor expertly covered up with a carpeted parcel tray. Any help or referral within Christchurch or close to Christchurch would be really appreciated. South African cars seem to be met with caution by compliance centres due to quite a few bogged up kombis coming in to nz with more poo than metal. It’s the one on trademe and Facebook. It doesn’t have to be concours just enough to get me over the line with repair cert the rest of the car mechanically is sound. The last time i restored a Mazda 1000/1300 in Hamilton in 2010 i added up the receipts and it came to 6.7k for panel and paint including fitting of 2 new Phil’s door skins and front chassis rail repair - one shop here quoted me 200k without viewing the car, another wouldn’t price it but said tens of thousands which for someone on a budget with a baby is impossible to get over the line with the wife. It’s been pretty depressing journey so far / so any help or referrals would be great. Thanks in advance guys I really really don’t want to part with the car as it’s my dream car and I should never have sold my original white sedan (also pictured). Jake

Have rising interest rates killed prices yet?
I expect to see a few coming up when the mortgages come off 2% fixed in the next 12-24 months and building activity scales down as liquidity tightens for home buyers, most will still be priced too proud. A lot of tradies are in the Rx game.

I thought he got an absolute bargain on the panel and paint and got tucked on the wiring

It was rescued as a rolling body from a wreckers yard somehow ending up there after lance warren and his business affairs went down the gurgler and his cars were liquidated..... to the yards credit they realised it was too mint to strip and contacted a Hamilton based Mazda fan who saved it and has slowly been returning it to its former glory with a brand new 20b. I have seen the car in person recently and the panel and paint was as good as it looked in 1996 which was testament to its build quality back then

Great topic! Easily my familia 1000 sedan with mint interior and plastics still on seats and door cards.... will never find one in like this again. Sold for 10k in 2012 and struggled to get that...

the word i heard is he brought roof cut and other parts from a guy in wellington and pretty much just tipped a lot of money on it.
its located in Hamilton now i believe.
would be interesting to see what its like with out all the upholstery in it.I remember seeing a whole mint possibly nos roof cut with pillars come up around the time that wreck was advertised so thought it would be good to grab if you were taking on that car - unbelievable repair job either way - I thought that shell was toast

Getting a bit more knowledge flowing from mates who are mechanics and work on rx8s been told avoid the rx8 s1 at all costs due to poor oiling design unless it’s had a rebuild or new crate motor. S2 is apparently the model to have as the oiling was sorted. Bloody Mazda you’d think they would have their shit together 34 years deep into production rotaries.

Thanks Mason my budget doesn’t extend to a spirit r.... I am just starting to do dd on rx8s and have test driven a couple this week including the 5 speed and auto models - reading up they actually seem to be a less durable motor than the older rx series Na 4 and 6 ports - is that the general consensus? I am leaning towards a mandatory compression check? You would be well under water if you had to fork out for a rebuild on these which will taking a lot of them off the road and on to the scrap heap similar to what big bore exhausts and no fcd did to turbo FCs across the mid to late 90s - they were literally blowing up pulling out and boosting away from the exhaust shop.

It’s also funny that mazda people don’t understand their own market - I was copied into a post of a critique on my car and some auto wrecker who had Imported a poo brown left hook with smashed sills thought he was going to pull 30k

I agree that 808 is a great buy compared to some of the other options listed over the last few months. I just sold that s2 rx7 over page to a collector but there was 5 people behind him ready to hand money over because it was unmodified. I have decided I am buying an rx8 with <100k and an interior and motor you could eat off for 5 grand which nobody wants but i personally think is actually a lot of car for the money.
They might even be collectable in another 15 years ! (Kidding) at least now I can drive it without the stress and still get a rotary fix. I don’t really care that people think they are ugly etc. I see value at 5k.
Early Mazda’s will eventually peak and come back a bit in my opinion as the generations behind us will probably be restoring Tesla’s in 20 years and chasing mint battery packs and computer displays on trade me..... that said late 50s fairlanes from my dads generation (his teenage rotary equivalent hero car) still pull big money I just don’t know if it’s jst boomers buying them and if the market will soften when boomers die out.

A bit of background on the rx2 above from a retired traffic cop:
The Mazda RX2 was purchased on the 28/7/1975 for the sum of $5236. This was the fastest fleet vehicle at the time and would outperform the v8 holdens etc. Unfortunately it was neither economical to run, or was it reliable. All fleet vehicles were held for 2 years and then replaced. This one had the motor completely overhauled after about 18 months of service. Due to the high repair cost it was decided to retain it for another year. The vehicle was sold at the end of the third year with the motor in the boot in pieces to a local auto wrecker for $1700. No further Rotary's were ever purchased for the dept. The photo itself depicts Traffic Officer Mark Aronsen during his time with the dept.
