And now the Deuce Coupe with some ignition timing! Sounds much better! Once his wideband arrives and he gets some tune onto it it'll run even more nicely.
Comes complete with testimonial and ms bashing, both unrequested
Just needs some accel pump code and it'd run well enough to drive around the world. Pretty sweet.

LOL
He's working on fixing the wiring again today. Fingers crossed he finds the fault.
You can hear that the off-idle response is absent - that's a code absence issue, but not a big one as it's only noticeable at low RPM. I guess I'll have to add some code for that eventually, however it's still not a big priority.
Fliboi: The bigger one is an MS2 box, the smaller one is FreeEMS. He made it small to fit it in the small cabin space more easily. Unsure if it will be displayed or hidden, though he's very proud of his work so it could go either way.

Hmm, you can actually see the injector LEDs go dark on the over run and the log he posted still has issues. Nevertheless, it's improved over last time and with better lighting for a sweeter video. I reckon we'll get some burnout vids out of this guy once I get him some ignition control and he puts a bit of a tune on it.

Pretty sweet! There were a couple of other videos last night, but it was dying on the over run due to loose wiring that's now fixed.
This guy has designed a cute little board he calls Jaguar that's about 2/3 to 3/4 the size of the MS case and is purpose built for GM DIS and Ford EDIS OEM engine setups. IE, it has two logic level "ignition" outputs and 4+ high-Z injector drivers. Pretty well suited for running a four cylinder with wasted spark and sequential too.
Some pics:
If those don't work, let me know and I'll re-upload them.
His 11th place thread:

Given that it's a VERY OS car, I thought you crowd might enjoy that

SHIT quality, but some rev limiter testing on the frenchy:
< wants to add a two step setup for anyone willing to demonstrate it! <3

A gadget-feature video:
Pretty nice for replaying something like a track day and watching/listening to your driving performance in real time. Otherwise just for effect, really.

I lold at you welding your container shut so your dad doesnt ransack tools... Payback I would think going by how many tools me and older bro aquired from our old man.
LOL, there's some truth in that, but not as much as you'd think! Mostly I always got the ones that he'd let turn to shit, fixed them, and put them back into service. I probably have more from my grandfather than my father, and way more of my own. Right now I can think of a rusty 500m builders square, some fucked old power tools including a small skilly and broken/dangerous hitachi 4" grinder, and a set of newland sockets that had no ratchet and were all rusted to the point of not being usable. I think there are at least 5 brands in there now, the ratchet is a nice jap Koken one

Do I still have a set of XXL skid marks in the carpark? Yes, it's 630am here... epic all nighter on some documentation for those poor bastards that were silly enough to buy Puma boards for 10 bucks Should dig up the thread and post a link. Jealous of summer and cars and burgers, especially burgers, also beaches. Urinate, I've got links to the old threads, and I've got videos, one of these weeks I'll upload a few and bug you about unlocking them.

Update from the last three years! Some of this should be very familiar to a few OSers! I hit the floor of a few peoples houses during that time!

Thanks again to everyone who showed up at BurgerFuel that night! It was a perfect leaving party

Voldo, just to clarify, ms2 has a straight line of voltage vs "opening time", freeems has a curve of voltage vs dead time, and ms3 has that and something more to cover the stuff in those links. ms1 may just have a single figure, though I'm not sure, it might have a straight line too. Upshot of a straight line is that your tune will never be stable with varying rpm and electrical load or while cranking. Upshot of not having the fancy stuff is that idle could be a bitch on huge injectors. Mostly, though, you can do without the fancy stuff, I consider that icing on the cake. I also consider the curve a basic function, though, and a straight line inadequate. I hope that makes it clear. I re read my post and it sounded like I was misrepresenting the truth, which is not something that I want to do. Not even a little bit.
Fred.
-
Holy shit that's a big post, Sim! Thanks for the backing, you're a star.
voldo, ms3 actually has something to cover that situation (ms2/ms1 do not) and I plan to add it in future too. Have a look at the three pages linked from this issue for more info: http://issues.freeems.org/view.php?id=181
Cute wee gem, if you're doing ign only, depending on what pattern the engine has on it, FreeEMS is a viable hacker's alternative right now. There are some weaknesses to the ignition stuff, but it tends to not be too bad. The hotel is near worst case, and it's daily driving from waiuku to henderson too.
It's not better than MS as a blanket statement, yet. It _IS_ better in *some* ways and _IS_ worse in others (because it's unfinished). It depends on your application and skill level as to whether it's worse or better.
I feel the MS docs are over done to the point of losing the point. I'm hoping to do better than that, but the proof is in the pudding and we're not there yet!
The fact that you spent days on it illustrates my point. I too have spent days, possibly weeks digging through their labyrinth of docs to find some should-be-obvious details. If you want to get a TA card and knock up some home brew circuits like 6 out of 10 so far have, I'll help you with that, no worries. Likely others such as Sim can help you too, it's really not that hard, you just have to get all the details spot on.
Have a look here, 5 out of those 6 are shown, these all run fine, more or less http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set= ... 021&type=3
Best bet, to save spamming OS, sign up on the forum and post a thread in diy hw on your engine setup and specs and we'll go from there.

Hey Fred, does FreeEMS work differently to megasquirt/other aftermarket ecu's?
That's a curly question! On some level they more or less all work the same. And on that level the things that separate them are:
Flexibility
Customisability
Reliability
Accuracy
Ease of use/intuitiveness
Consistency
etc.
On other levels they can work very differently. Some are definitely better than others. For example holding a squirter bottle in front of your intake is likely better than a MicroTech: Worst ECU on the market? Maybe, maybe not, I'm sure there are worse, but I'd rather rock carbs and points than a MicroTech.
Does FreeEMS work differently to MS, yes. Mostly in simple ways, though. For example assuming speed density operation you have the following differences, at the least:
Their "VE" table isn't VE at all unless you select an obscure mode which no one realises is there.
Their speed density has an option to make it work in a way contrary to physics (and common sense)
Their tables are 12x12 or 16x16 ours are configurable from 2x2 to 24x20 or 20x24 and various other combinations in case you have a screamer or a low rpm booster.
Their VE and lambda tables are 8 bit, which you might not think matters, but combined with their choice of scaling you're often using half of that = 128 bit where a minimal change of 1 means close to 1% fueling difference AT maximum values. Change the ball game to 30% "VE" at idle and suddenly the MINIMUM change you can make is more than 3% fueling.
Their injector characterisation is a straight line, real injectors are a curve, so is FreeEMS... This REALLY matters with BIG injectors on small engines in terms of idle and emissions and general refinement.
Their comms are unreliable and unprotected, ours are checksummed and verified in a bunch of other ways. End result, you can tune with confidence even on shitty computers and shitty serial adapters. I've watched friends make minor tweaks to their MS tunes and had the engine go ROUGH and then die. Pull the table back out and it's full of random garbage. That garbage was RUNNING the engine Fuck that.
etc.
Trust me, I'm dedicating years of my life to kicking MS arse, I do know what I'm doing, I'm a good developer and know enough about engines to keep people on their toes, I'm doing a good job and the end result IS going to epic.
Should you run FreeEMS right now? Not unless you want to work with me and put up with weaknesses while dev continues, etc. People are getting good results despite the weaknesses, though. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and some things that I'm totally not happy with are working well enough for real people to not care much about.
I've tried looking through your documentation but can't really see anything that relates to the actually operation of the ECU. Any links that could help?I have documentation? What, where, when? LOL... yeah, sorry about that. There aren't many docs yet, partly intentionally (keep away noobs) and partially because there is more important stuff to do. Ask any specific questions that you have, and I'll answer when I check in on this thread
is there a place where we can download the setup and tuning software to have a look? The only currently working Tuning software is called MegaTunix and is only sporadically available for windows. This does bother me, however it's not a priority, just like the docs aren't. Running a VM or dual booting linux are pretty easy to do if you really want to try it. You can't try FreeEMS offline in MTX either, so if you grab a copy from somewhere, try a MS firmware, judge the look/feel of the app, ignore all of the settings and functions.
Are you running 8 sequential injectors yet Fred? No, not yet, later this year, though the brave and keen can do it right now. I just won't support anyone that does it, yet. Once I start working on that I'll be all for people trying it as an alternative to the current code base.
Gasp! OK, back to other stuff!
Fred.

Great to see some interest in it! Hopefully I can pull it together and ship such kits for a competitive price.
Snoozin', yes sir, EPIC win, the dude spends 3 hours with me on skype before we realised that he A) didn't power the board properly during a firmware load and used a loader that doesn't verify and C) therefore got a bad burn several times in a row, then he fixed that and went out and fired it up. Then he went out and got beer in it. Then while I was asleep against my advice he went out and beat the shit out of it street racing with NO tune and no wideband LOL. Fucking epic. He thinks its the best thing since sliced bread. Better than the hacked up OEM crap he had on there before, for sure, despite being half finished, not configured, not tuned, etc LOL. Welcome to FreeEMS, vids:

And the full story in his own words:
http://forum.diyefi.org/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=1560
It's even more hilarious because his batt ref voltage was FLOATING and therefore the pulse width was varying randomly, and other dodgy things. Between him fixing his hardware and me adding a special code block for those engines, we should have it running pretty mint inside 2 weeks.
Fred.

Sweet as! I'll make some noise and spread some links when that idea comes to fruition! Multiple hw projects on the go right now.

Thanks for the comments everyone!
If you guys want to start a pros/cons thread, I'm up for answering questions as it would make a good foundation for a MS vs. FreeEMS page later, which I will do, once it's worth doing. Right now there are probably more reasons to run MS than FreeEMS, but that depends what you need, what you expect and why you're doing it.
ms only works fine if you're lucky, good, very very careful or all of the above.100% agree with this, have only done 3 megasquirts (ms1, ms2 &ms3) but all were far from drama free. now i'd rather spend double on a link than another ms.
keep us updated man, keen for cheap ecu, without ms issues!
Yep, no surprise. Having said that, my ms2 install on my ute was 100% trouble free with the exception of some of my own dodgy wiring (my fault). However this was only the case because I'm lucky, good, very very careful, and had spent 3 years reading every post on their forums noticing and noting where others failed and learning from their mistakes. My wiring is obscene and my IAT is in the right place. Having said that, my second MS2 install more recently on that BFMR went not as well. The 4+1 CAS code in MS2Extra is not well tested and did NOT work right. This came down to bad luck because everything else was even more mint than my ute install. After I left NZ he swapped the disk to a 4+2 DSM/Evo/MX5 one and it ran sweet all of a sudden with no other changes... typical MS fail.
Engines 10 and 11 are days away. The first Honda (J Series twin turbo V6) and the first 1UZ-FE. The twin turbo supra 1UZ-FE has been held up by lack of laptop at em_knaps' place. Someone get around there and help him get me a binary log of the thing so that we can iron out the setup issues and verify the code is good!
I'm planning to start selling a DIY hardware solution in the next few months, which will open the entry up to "can solder" from "can create entire circuit from scratch on perf board". Hopefully it's fairly cheap, and hopefully people go for it so that I can buy milk and cornflakes as my over worked and under paid wife is going broke feeding me while we wait for my legal documents to live and work here. Currently ordering heaps of sample parts to assist in the design of it. Donations of cheap toyota/mazda/nissan/honda cars for testing welcomed Pretty hard to come by in Spain, though. Mostly french shit, german stuff and gm shit.
If you start a vs. thread, link it here and I'll dive in when I next have a spare moment

Reinvent the wheel? Because the wheel is bent and leaks air
Cheaper, but also *BETTER* ms only works fine if you're lucky, good, very very careful or all of the above. One day I'll document weakness of it, but in the mean time, I'll just keep engineering mine to be better.
Thanks Simon! Aiming for 100 engines running by the end of the year! Hopefully a few OSers in amongst that! Right now it's about 1 engine per month. That should improve as it gets to be more feature complete and general ULTRA high quality hardware is available to match.
You could say hobby, but I've lived and breathed it for four solid years, having only worked 11 months in that time, and surviving mostly from donations to the project. I'm planning to ramp that up and make it my career now. If I can pull that off, everyone will benefit and FreeEMS will become a common name on the forums as MegaJizz is now, but with less complaints.
I heard a rumour about some ROFL comments on the frenchy vid! Hoping to get a copy

I see that everyone is out partying, fishing, surfing, bbqing and otherwise enjoying the great NZ summer (even if it is reportedly a bit rainy this year!), I'm definitely jealous... bastards. Can't say that I blame you, though
Considering that many of you had requested vids/pics of em_knaps' frenchy, I expected there would be a few comments. Clearly I had forgotten about the weather/season...

Speaking of OS cars on FreeEMS, there was also this sweet good condition volvo wagon:
It's being daily driven in Canada with COP ignition.

A couple of videos, one from today, one from yesterday, both in west Auckland, both by kiwis, both mostly unassisted by me in getting them configured.
Firstly, the Mk1 Mini, engine 8, wasted spark ignition only, hot cams, etc:
Secondly, em_knaps Citroen GS has had a major upgrade from shitty MS1 to FreeEMS. This video is long and somewhat directed at me... but it sounds pretty sweet IMO. NO tune, flat maps, rough as guts, but driving and working pretty well. The 9th FreeEMS engine:
I'd really like to see Preston with my old hotel, and these two, at a burger fuel meet on the same night for a tripple showing of FreeEMS goodness.
There are a few more cars lined up to run "soon", too.

Update on the mighty hotel! She's been daily driving FreeEMS for a few months now, the bastard that took her uninstalled it for a while due to a circuit board issue he didn't have time to solve, I was angry, but now I love him again <3
Dizzy is now locked solid and timing fully under FreeEMS control.
Fred.

That engine needs a name... H10-500 or U10-500, to borrow from VW's nomenclature?
It also needs an EMS... but that's got to be a mk2 thing.
Very cool Ned!

Will most likely have 3.8l of V conf. 6 cyl. FreeEMS powered.
