  1. IF you want a few more herbs out of a V6, sling the essex in a corner in case you want to return to original in the future and find an old Ford Explorer aka 4.0 L Cologne V6 (same family as found in later capris), they are turbo kits for them too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Cologne_V6_engine#SOHC

The Capri Cologne only went as far as 2.8 and the turbo versions were based on this or the 2.9 Sierra engine. A mate in the UK had a supercharged 2.9 in an XR4x4 Sierra that was apparently a development engine for Turbo Technics, before they dropped the supercharger idea and went turbo. It ate heads, pistons and rods at an amazing rate and despite him getting about 270hp if he'd sunk the same money into a YB, he'd have been in the mid 400s hp wise.

  2. Not wanting to piss on your chips, but keeping up with a GTIR on a track isn't too hard :). I had one for 4 years and it was fast, but the handling was always disappointing, lots of under steer. On the road it was manageable, on the track it was shocking. The MI16 powered 205GTI I replaced it with would run rings around it on a track...

Regardless, sweet car, should be a lot of fun with a snotty A15 under the bonnet.

  3. Sunday fun. I should be in the house looking after my 8 week old daughter and giving her mum a rest but instead I'm doing this:

    IMAG0096_zps0w9sqvzs.jpg

Everything is unbolted ready to move forward, but daughter wants attention, wife wants what's left of her sanity to remain, so back on baby watch for now.

  4. Not had anything oldschool of note since I went back to the UK and had to pass on the Chevette to a mates son (awesome first car!), but I do still have something of interest parked at home.

I did have an old B2000 that I was doing up, but that got borrowed from where I parked it for work and the kind gentlemen who borrowed it never gave it back. So rather than start again I bought someone else's project they'd finished.

He'd spent some coin on it, it was build by the company that built his stock car and as it was his tow vehicle, it was made bullet proof where he could. Fully rebuilt W58, 'drift-spec' diff tightened and fettled by Diff's R Us, heavy duty suspension etc.

Only problem was they obviously knew their mechanical stuff, but the wiring job wasn't great. Started cutting out randomly, so took it around to Hope Hickman in town for a once over and they agreed, spot on mechanically, but some dumb mistakes with the wiring. That sorted, she was good to go. Highly recommend HH, they know their stuff and are very reasonable too.

Currently having issues with the clutch hydraulics too, did the master cylinder before Xmas, but it didn't last and I knew it was time to do the slave cylinder. 10 minute job on an average car, but the slave cylinder is tucked behind the exhaust manifold so won't come off, can't get to the bolts. Tried taking the manifold off, but can't get to 3 studs. Thought about popping the gearbox off, but can't get to the top 2 bell housing bolts because the engine is nicely up against the firewall, where it should be. So in the process of popping the engine and box off the mounts, move the whole lot forward, so I can get to the bell housing bolts, split the engine and gearbox, then finally get access to slave cylinder. Fun. Not.

  5. This:

    http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/proton/auction-578381415.htm

Being a horrible, Malaysian Mitsi built under license, it's ready to take the real deal running gear, so 4G63 etc. Not 100% for the Coupe, but the Proton saloon was the same as the early Lancer saloons, underneath was all set up, waiting for the full Evo 4WD running gear. The Proton hatch was the same, much like the Mirage of the same shape would accept the Evo stuff without much effort.

  6. Don't mean to offend but I dunno if I'd bother rebuilding that bike.

If its going to cost you $550 just for the power valve parts...

Being a 1990 its old enough to be old but not old enough for VMX so even if it was mint it would probably only be worth $2k tops.

Then you have to find new forks, radiators, probably all the wheel bearings, tyres, bushings etc. In that photo the rear shock looks a bit fucked too.

If it were me I'd be selling it as parts to fund a better base to build from.

That all sounds harsh but I think its fair.

I'll go a bit further than harsh, unless it has sentimental value or you really have your heart set on rebuilding this regardless of cost, you're going to waste a crap load of money rebuilding a bike that is old tech and of no significance what so ever in terms of MX history.

Even from the photos I can see a good couple of grand worth of parts, very few of which will be easy or cheap to source, due to age and lack of importance.

If you just want a paddock basher, get an old XR or KDX off TM, if you want a half-decent MX bike for trail riding, budget $3k and get an early 2000s 2 smoker that's been looked after properly.

That bike, sadly, is only good for throwing in the skip.

  7. Had the starter go on my modern a few weeks ago, took it around to a local auto sparky that works out of his garage. He had everything set up to recondition the starter there and then, so he pulled it apart for me to show me what the problem was (I like finding out this stuff). First thing he pointed out was bench testing doesn't really help with sluggish or clicking starters, often they will spin up fine on the bench, but won't do much when under load. On mine, the copper plating on the commutator (I think that's what it was called) was worn beyond repair, so I just got a rebuilt one on exchange as he would have had to order parts to sort mine out.

My symptoms started out with sluggish starting, clicking and finally wouldn't turn the engine over at all. Hope that helps.

  8. Hey... been a long time since I posted on here, was playing with a Chevette many moons ago, before selling up mid-project and heading back the UK. Been back a while, but not had anything OS of note, so just been lurking...

Anyways, enough waffle on me. One of my mates from the UK has been writing for a few UK car mags, Performance Ford, Japanese Performance, Retro Cars etc. Dan Furr, if you have any of the recent issues of those lying around. He's always on the lookout for cars to feature and is no stranger to getting feature cars from the States, he just calls the owner for the words and sorts a local photographer for the pics.

Been telling him for years about the quality of cars over here, so he's keen to see what we've got. Obviously Sheepers Celicas are feature-worthy, as they've been featured locally already (in fact if it's been in an NZ mag, it's easier for him to sell the idea in the UK), but if there's anything else you think are feature car material, let me know. I'll trawl back through the projects and see if I spot anything (of course most posts in there are "in progress" and he would need finished cars), but chuck up suggestions as well. Especially keen on you home-build wizards, NZ has a lot of unsung talent in that area, some incredibly talented guys building on a budget in their garages.

Chance to get internationally famous, if you're keen. PM me for Dan's deets or if you want to know more.

  9. bahaha airbags rofl me just like minitruckers i've contemplated it but a static drop is far more suitable and cheaper than this,

ie have meke tow slug or be able to wreck the frame by draggin it after all the hard works been done??

and then not even be able to tow nothing or even fit a trail bike on the back let alone rubbish and parts and so on?

+1 what the fuck is the point of a ute if you can't at least stick a motox bike on the back? Airbags are for 60's Impalas and shit...

    -1

Not everyone buys utes as parts/bike haulers though.

especially not the shiny paint and interior minitruck owners.

You can still tow shit with a bagged car/ute/van. the criz wags on bags towed cars to track day. Obviously not set on low though.

Welding steel plates under chassis prevents the chassis itself actually scrapping on the ground.

Got no arguement for price cause well it does cost alot more than springs and leave resetting

Yeah agree that utes aren't always parts/bike haulers, just find it funny that someone would buy a load hauler that needs to tow a trailer to haul a load.

    Each to their own, etc....

  11. I can fully appreciate that a place to visit isnt always a great place to live. Have heard the phrase "ping pong poms" where us brits come over, enjoy it start with because of better weather, exchange rate, low living costs etc. But have too high expectations about living out here and after a couple of years go home, then shorlty after decide it was actaully better in NZ.

 Not heard that one before, but as I am a ping pong kiwi (just about to head back to the UK, although in an ideal world I'd stay here) I can appreciate the issue.

Yeah biggest thing for me, having spent so long living in the UK, is that some of the smaller towns (like Nelson) are beautiful as fuck, especially in summer, but are so quiet and isolated compared to anywhere in the UK. So unless that's something you really appreciate, it will drive you absolutely batshit mad within 18 months.

  12. Well, I will be starting off in Auckland and then work it from there. Have no real plans once i have arrived but want to check out both islands and will have to get a job at some point, doing what i dont know.

Thought it best if I get out of the UK for a year or so as am fed up with all this doom and gloom recession stuff. It is on the TV and radio 24/7 and the papers are full of it. Though admitedly I'm losing my job in a few weeks time so it has affected me.

Fear not, although it is correct that we get all the recession crap here too, if you are heading over here for all the reasons most people from the UK decide to head to NZ, even Auckland will be a revelation. I ended up here (originally a Nelson bogan, lived in the UK for 13 years though) due to work only, but I think it's pretty cool. Fully understand why others wouldn't like it though.

But doing the tour will help make your mind up, just be aware that some parts of NZ are awesome to visit, not so great to live in.

  13. Should be sweet man. Try some so we all know how good it works!

Lol but he may end up with a big pile of oxidised Land Rover and a post that says 'nah, it don't work so well'.

At least we all know Por15 works... and it goes a very long way, suprising what I've coated with a small tin or 2.

  14. The Wangan is an Expressway in Tokyo.

All they have to do to make the car accurate to the Comic is put on flares and wheels that sit flush with those flares and then sit it flat on the tarmac, with a larger single pipe rear muffler.

Of course, if they wanted to match it with the Anime they'd have to put fender mirrors on, spotlamps in the airdam, colour matched bolt-on flares, single larger rear muffler, appropriate number plate that denotes modification, etc.

Regardless of what one they wanted to adhere too, it wouldn't be hard. The DevilZ is a much loved character.

The animators of the InitialD series made the WanganMidnight series but it's origins are a comic book.

The Devil Z is a Fairlady Z with Twin Turbo highly worked L28, been through several owner's and believed to be "cursed" it always ends up getting wrecked then rebuilt due to the love/passion/psychosis of the owners.

It races a series of other badass cars on the Wangan, at night. A Porsche with equally infamous reputation known as "Blackbird", as well as a mix of other cars, from 32GT-R's to Ferrari's.

Ah cool, I've played the arcade game lots of times but could never quite understand the story behind it or what the fuck the devil z shit was all about... makes more sense now, cheers...
