werd.
i roll my shit tin like is was made yesterday. long distance, short distance, with heaps of cunts in it, full of gear, fast, slow, rain, shine, even snow once.
jsut don't beat them and they'll pay you back with a million smiles per mile
Good shit! I've done exactly the same.
Not saying you can't, my comment was it will send it to the scrapyard, personally i've just found it more enjoyable to keep the fun cars for better things than running down the road to grab some beer in the pissing down rain..
I bust out an oldschool car just for the fun of driving, the character, gymkhana, drags, cruises, that's fun! But for the daily duties it can stay in the garage. I'm not rich enough to afford to fix everything that's going to break or wear out..
Though to say you shouldn't use an oldschool car everyday and then to say you only use yours on weekends or for essentially motorsport type events, makes me chuckle a little. Those events MIGHT wear your components a little faster than regular daily driving.
yes, understand your point, (I didn't say shouldn't though) was refering to myself and they way i treat my daily drivers.. maybe i'm too abusive with my toys? my daily 93 corolla hack wagon daily is on its second engine in 4 years, and really needs another gearbox again. has been run into 3 times buy randoms and have had to repair.. every panel has a presure ding, or scratchs just looks like a munted rolling pile to be honest. If I was (and have done) daily driving my old RX7, it was just way to expensive.
I think the only oldschool cars left on the roads are the ones that have been well looked after and not out in daily hacking it in the rain every week. the dailys are landfill years ago..
Would love to daily drive an RX3 coupe, I just no the outcome and my bank ballance couldn't afford it.
I'm not saying you can't daily drive an oldschooler.. just that I know the outcome.

wow... see that comment got to a few people.. lol
Sorry don't come on this site too much, or any other much in the last year or so.
I'm 34, have owned a shit load of old school cars, all jappa's but thats just what I'm into (not all Mazdas, but datsuns, toyotas etc..)
Have driven all of them as daily drivers at some stage, My position now is they are no longer daily's unless you are rich enough to maintain them.
Maybe its just seeing some of the 10 or so ground up rebuilds I've done over the years on cars, and almost all of them don't exist anymore due to being daily driven, either written off in accidents or just raped and rusted into the ground. Just an observation, hence the comment.
you fail at oldschool
gtfo of my website
why would you need to rebuild every 10 years
lol at rust - get a real car - morrie only just needs patches in the rust prone areas now - after 60 years
beetle is rust free - due to being german steel and not brazilian muck
daily = dont care about small dings/chips - part of life
mazda = lol fuck that anything thats currenlty fan boy as fuck isnt worth rolling
German eh? So all those rusty piles that are Kombi's rolling around are still sweet? lol - they are pretty fan boy aren't they
I love the old splitty kombi's and can apreatiate most VW's, but the vans in particular are way out of my price range and you can't tell me they are daily drivers anymore?
true if its you as all your cars are prestine condition, most normal people dont have cars that after 35 years look as if they havent made it onto the showroom floor yet.Pristine or not, a car daily driven is going to deteriorate, 10 years for a jappa and its time for a rebuild - japanese only design them to last 8 years... if its been left in the weather for 10 years. not much you can do about it. 6-8 years and the paint starts to crap out Clear coats fall off, older flat enamels etc.. start to crack/craze, then the surface rust etc starts to set in.. just a fact of life. (I'm talking about daily driving here, no garage, driving to the beach, work - what I'd class as daily driving.)
Not saying you can't do it, just it will kill the car unless you can afford the maintenance - which is going to include a repaint/rebuild at some stage
They last if you look after them and it's really not that hard to keep them maintained.I'd rather drive my car for 10 years and restore it than keep it locked in the shed, not being enjoyed.
How many cars oldschool cars have you daily driven for 10 years though? are they still on the road?
What the hell? Why bother having an old car if you don't drive it?In saying that some dumb bitch rammed into the back of my Gem on the weekend at the KFC drive through. Ended up just laughing when my bumper was perfect and her numberplate was all bent up etc.
Think you kinda answered it right there, next time it might be writen off the road, all for some KFC? bummer is all i'm saying, see you in 15 years when everyones asking where all the oldschool cars have gone...
Why bother having an old car? Because I love them, heaps of enjoyment rebuilding and driving them, but do go do the shopping? err.. not really that enjoyable coming back and finding some retard has backed there honda into the rear quarter.. missioning out 60k across gravel roads to that sweet surf spot after you spent every weekend for two years doing the body work on your oldschool car... not really that enjoyable either..
I bust out an oldschool car just for the fun of driving, the character, gymkhana, drags, cruises, that's fun! But for the daily duties it can stay in the garage. I'm not rich enough to afford to fix everything that's going to break or wear out..

if you drive an oldschool car every day you are just sending it to the scrapyard.
Unless you have heaps of time to keep it mint, or can afford to pay someone to rebuild it every 10 years...
Cars just don't last that long, they are made out of metal that rusts, driving it in the rain and they are going to rust, there is nothing you can do about it.
Better off with a shit box 90's car, cost nothing, cheap to run, no body is going to steal your badges and who cars if you come back and someone opens there door and has chiped or dinged the paint. Can't relax if i've driven an oldschool car for daily duties, constantly worried if someones stealing it, scratching it etc.. Or maybe its just because i own mazdas.. lol

RX3 for sure.

While the 4&rotors has some merits, but on the whole I think it's FTL.
Unless you get there really early, the place is chocka block of dickhead punk kids with their hats on backwards and their jeans hanging down below their arseholes. I love cars, don't get me wrong, but After being there for 10 minutes I fell like cracking the little shits who get in my way. I guess I'm not one for crowds. Plus being OS to the core, I don't get much pleasure from looking at new(ish) cars that have had shitloads of coin spent on them. Just doesn't float my boat. The old school content is never enough for me.
The datsun club is having our big cruise the same day as the show down here. So I don't think I'll be going to the show. Don't even think I'll bother with the drags on the sunday either.
Lol, the last nats had more oldschool than new cars...
Always worth a look, yeah it has crowds, but thats a good thing.. more support car scene gets the better, before the law makes us all drive standard plastic battery cars..
Don't mind seeing peoples projects, under construction, might be years if ever before they get finished.
Its the 10th year anniversary of the nats, they are having an area with some of the old winners over the years (tim woods old RX3 etc..) some that havn't been seen for years. will be worth a look.

limp
Can see why so many people detest the wank hill engine. Alllll thoughh, they some did have their bonnets off so i guess it makes up for it <-- bitching/moaning
Old school Mazda's rotaries attract an eclectic mix from all walks of life, you would be surprised the people that own them tucked away in there garage/storage unit that you would never know about, quite a few in the 40+ age group also... To even try and put them under one banner is just incorrect, any time spent in the rota scene and you will find that out very quickly.
I think its just some of the squeaky ones at times stir up other parts of the car scene and general public.. lol
Mazda probably produced the nicest oldschool cars.
Agreed. They have done pretty well at producing good looking cars over the years...
And the rotary is an amazing little engine, show me another 1300cc engine that can produce 800+ hp??
I like all sorts of oldschool cars, but would have to agree the mazda's still rate tops in books, just getting right up there now $$ wise, most models are unaffordable..
Dans 323 as of last weekend is now the quickest un-tubbed import in NZ with a 8.43 @ 261kph.. pretty impressive i recon!

Me...
Going to be mean, heaps of new street cars finished ready for sunday!
-
cheers for the comments, that blue one thats sitting in the background in the photo is a 79.

Yeah the Red one is my girlfreinds, Bridget. will get her to put a user ride rebuild thread up or something, tons of pics of the build up, back to bare steel, quite a few new parts. Did all the panel and paint ourselves, as was on a pretty tight budget!
Cool little utes, someone needs to finish that body droped 1200, i think it would be awesome finished.

current REGO or WOF is not required, although your vehicle is expected to be of a safe standard
All cars will be scrutinized prior to entering, some of the main things scrutineers will be checking your vehicle for are;
No missing wheel nuts
Seat and steering wheel must be secure
Safety belts working correctly
No excessively loud exhausts
Full travel in brake pedal
your car must have a bonnet
Secure fuel cap
Hmmm, if this is true, then what the hell is a bonnet!?!!
Yes this site is new, just been updated a day ago, in future yes they want all cars to run bonnets.
All are scruteneered at entry and like anything there is always an exception, for example some supercharged V8's physically can't fit a bonnet..

not really
i just had a shit load(virtually a whole car worth minus body shell) of parts most were mint and would be perfect for a project-but only got a few people wanting little trims and stuff
i ended up sellin them with the mint rt40 i had so there now the new owners problem
yep, my brother had them sitting under my Parents house for years before he off loaded them on you...
Rare cars, and not many people looking for parts...
-
tub it in, don't flair it out!
Flair are damn fugly imo...
-
How can people write like this!
Education.
Whats funny is after years of forum exposure to txt talk I have become immune and don't even notice it much anymore, scary huh?
Used to bug the shit out of me...
-
I've rebuilt enough cars to know what would happen once you start sandblasting or acid dipping those panels...
-
heres a few pics of my old Vespa I restored last year...
1963 vespa 90
-
they are, but only if they are tidy, restorations cost alot of cash... Hense why tidy original mint cars get top dollar.
-
hard case!
-
Yuhh strip it and sell it off then. Probably make 5 Gs then:P
Me=wrong, apparently
Please give me a break down of what you would sell the parts for to make 5 grand!
Are you going to sell the bumper for $1000 dollars or something?
2 x doors $50-$200
rusty bonnet $50
tailgate $50 - $100
2x rusty guards $50 - $100
bumpers $100 - $200
interior $80-$200
dash pad $40
3k motor and box $50 - $100
standard suspension and diff $100
$570 - $1090
(few other bits I missed)
Thats asuming there is someone wanting to pay anything for these parts, they are a rare car... I'd imagine you would be sitting on the parts for years.. in the end they would end up at the dump.
I had a mint KE20 Dash pad sitting in the workshop, couldn't give the thing away... got biffed out!
Cool car, great project, but not worth 5k!
-
5 grand?!?! wtf... you would have to be reeeeaally keen to pay that much!
I wouldn't pay anymore than $200 maybe a grand if I just had to own one...
I've owned heaps of the KE20 series, and rebuilt a couple.. Even if you did all the work yourself that car looks like a major! Original yes, but the surface rust alone would require bare metal strip, and I guarntee if you acid dipped that bonnet it would come out like swiss cheese. Hate to think what the condition of the guards are in where they bolt to the chassis/enginebay, and it looks as though the bottoms have already been bogged. also the doors look like the rust is very set in, those doors are also prone to rust if its showing on the outside, the inside will be fucked.
2-3k's worth of panel in paint (if you could do it all yourself) and a total rebuild, (even though I know I got the last KE20 idler arm) fuck know's where you would get new suspension components from now. probaby have to have every thing rebuilt.
Definetly rebuildable, but the sort of car that used to be lined up at pick a part and were all crushed.

This is going a bit far in my opinion
Why the hesitantation to post asking prices?>???
in General Car Chat

People do it hoping someones going to offer them $50,000 for there car
Reality is it doesn't work like that and all they get is everyone offers them $2 until you finally get out of them what they want for it and find out they are dreaming anyway.
It makes no sence, totaly pointless waste of everyones time.
Also i think a lot of people do it for attention seeking or just testing the water to see how much interest they get and it makes them feel a bit better about themselves.. lol
If they want a high price, just list it and wait till some comes knocking...
If you have something everyone really really wants, just chuck it up on trademe at low reserve and it will sell for top dollar!
