  1. I could be wrong, but was under the impression the KE70 4 door was the stiffest structurally? AE85 seems quite overpriced too, not as expensive as 86 of course. Then again KE70's seem to have gone stupid now too. Fuck, I'll stick to my Starlet, KE70 ute, KE20, TA61....damn I have too many projects.

  2. And also ae85/6 is not overrated. thyre fantastic cars. Cant argue with it. And if u are ur just bein a homo. Sure u can make anycar hardcone. But thats not what this was about. It'll be much cheaper to modifly an ae86 to be quick than a chevette.

The point I was making is if your sole goal is performance, then a KE70 is a better base than an AE86 because its cheaper and you will change everything that makes the 86 better from factory anyway. Less money, same results. How much YOU value owning an AE86 over a KE70 is the only deciding factor.

  3. I think over time original ones may retain or even improve their value, if its been modded though you may find the mods devalue the car. And nearly every one out there has been modded or fucked with (or totalled by a wannabe drifter). So if you plan to get one, keep it stock and don't drive it. Which to me completely defeats the point of owning a car.

  4. I still say, saying things like "underneath it all it's just a Corolla" etc etc is a moot point.

Some people get real defensive about calling an AE86 a Corolla, obviously forgetting in some markets it had a Corolla badge on it...

Personally, I would rate the TE71 GT more highly than the AE86 due to rareness of the top spec models. Will be interesting to see where the market for them goes over the next few years.

  5. The rebodied KE70 argument is ridiculous... they may share some underpinnings but at the end of the day, one's a far more worthy car. It's like saying a 105 GTV is just a flash Guilia so as a result it doesn't deserve it's (very well deserved) classic status....

I disagree, KE70 is the perfect comparison when you are talking race cars. Since you generally upgrade brakes and suspensions anyway modding either one gets you same result on the track. The key difference is the KE70 is cheaper to buy and cheaper to fix. The question is then how much are you willing to pay to have an AE86?

Just remember, the AE86 wasn't some supercar from the factory or even the highest spec with that motor. At least the AA63 Carina got IRS rear. It started out popular for track use because it was realtively light, cheap to modify and cheap to fix. Underneath it all, it is still just a Corolla with an uprated engine and vented discs on the front.

  6. Yes, but thats the AE86 premium pricing. There is also a fully caged KE70 with 3T, T50 and Hilux LSD with 4 wheel discs for $4.5k. Buy that, swap in 4AGE and you are still well ahead on price. Just have to ask yourself how much extra an AE86 is worth to you compared to any other car.
