Suggest if you do decide on a 1725 try and get an iron head one previously from a Super Minx as previously mentioned and agree there isn't the corrosion issues compared with the alloy head Hunter engine.
Owned a 66 Super Minx 1725 iron head probably one of the best cars I've had.
Also had 74 Hunter GL and 69 Singer Vogue (fancy Hunter) - 2 of the worst cars owned. Apart from corrosion issues they were terrible for ovalling the bores (soft) and breaking rings. Such a dispointment after Super Minx

I've never heard of to high octane causing detonation, is that a thing?
The guy I bought it off said to use 98, I'm just getting to the point of looking into it a bit more myself.
Cheers
Matt
Detonation can occur if too low octane fuel is used in a higher compression engine and / or ignition timing too advanced etc

Especially liked the EH179 Holden (we had a similar EJ Holden as family car about 50 years ago and especially liked it)
and the original green HQ Holden (had one of these as a family car 40 + years ago - always liked the lines / look of this car wouldn't mind a good one of these with a good engine/trans setup)
would love an HQ 2 door Monaro LS with nice ie holden factory rostyle wheels or Cragar mags but dreaming coz a good one now would be worth a small fortune

1932 Chev Sedan (broke in half ie chassis it was case of check the petrol and fill up the oil)

1967 XR Ford Falcon 160 (was an ex taxi had done a few miles but still a great car)

1956 Morris Minor 1000 (late Grandfathers - sisters learnt to drive in it - got written off by youngest sister )

1974 Datsun 260C (probably best car here - great L26 engine etc)
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7005/6699836799_69610ccdce_b.jpg
1976 Toyota Corolla KE 35 SR Coupe 3KB (Mum) good - typical corolla
http://flipacars.com/pics/Toyota/toyota-corolla-sr-coupe-02.jpg
1980 Toyota Corolla SR5 Coupe / Liftback 2TB (Dad) from new good - typical corolla
https://i.wheelsage.org/pictures/t/toyota/corolla_sr5_liftback/toyota_corolla_sr5_liftback_2.jpg
The best cars were the Japanese Datsun 260C far superior in every way over HQ Holden and Corolla Coupes great as well.
The best of the rest EJ Holden and XR Falcon.
ps pics not original ie copied from google (the closest likeness - colour etc)

Makes sense and a lot easier to improve on what you had. The RB engines were the best thing about the VLs, a tweeked one of these would totally vapourise a V8

Sweet old Torana in Pegasus
And cool wee datto 1200 in GoonNice examples of early LJ Torana and Datsun 1200
Sister had one of these (Datsun 1200) over 30 years ago, never seen a car sooooo badly rusted - could put fist through several of the perforation rust holes got it fixed great car.
Sat my drivers licence in one of these also in 1972
She also had a later LH Torana 2850 (173) 30years ago (repowered it with 202 + 4 spd)

1974 Suzuki TS 185L (2 stroke)
Great 1st trail bike and used as my farm bike also (1 tooth less on front / gearbox sprocket - better for hill and off road)
had in mid / late 70s. (stripped off street gear mirrors indicators etc mounted smaller tail light)
1978 Kawasaki KT250 trials (2 stroke)
Tractor like torque heavy flywheel inertia at low rpm - could take off in 3rd without slipping the clutch.
Far superior to 4 stroke equivalents. superb farmbike on steep hill country needing minor modification ie knobbly tyres. front mud guard up.
Far superior to purpose built farmbikes TF Suzukis and similar. no silly crash bars extra weight etc.
Trials type gearing so not so good on road / fast trail work ( ie 1st 2nd 3rd close then a jump to 4th then jump to 5th) but perfect for hill country farm work.
had in early 80's

Sounds like you've gone through everything just re check again .
I would suspect the new HT leads could be of poor quality and are breaking down when get warm.
Have had this happen on an HJ Holden 173.
Did you replace the HT lead between the coil and distributor as well?
also check low voltage connections in distributor between points condenser earth if anythings loose - not conneced up correctly
