However surely the head lights are just a generic round 5 3/4 sealed or semi sealed?

Nah, Alfa's are odd. However inners may be a bit easier to come by as they're not handed, so I may get a pair. I've heard anecdotal tails of cars being written off back in the day, after hitting something head on and smashing the lights. New lights were hard to find or real spendy, so car's were binned. Can't verify that as true, but with old Alfa's, especially Alfetta's, it can sometimes be a minor thing that breaks the camels back. The cars were worth next to nothing for a long time.

subsequently Mr. Wof Man declined my application to renew my warrant of fitness

That's what I was concerned with, very much up to the WOF man.

Cheers for the replies. Very helpful.

  2. Thanks for all the replies, I had a look on that vehicle inspection website, and felt the same, that "amber" may mean orange indicator's, or marker lights.

Anyway there are two options if you wanna do it.

    Buy some spare head lamps.

Then either buy the yellow tint off ebay or trademe.

Or, you can paint them like I did on my datsun van. The paint you want is Dupli color metal cast yellow.

    Works a treat.

Spare lights are not really an option. Old Alfetta headlights aren't easy to come by, but if I ever do find a set...

Does that paint come off with turps/white spirits/moonshine? Or on for keeps? What does Mr. WOF man say about it?

Might look into the yellow bulb option too actually.

Mods to them: Rowdy exhaust on the old car and some period wheels. Newer car has a lsd to stop it blowing up the diff.

How you found out about oldschool: Google

Anything else you want to add: Mostly into European cars, but several trips to Japan have opened me up to the cool stuff over there to.

  4. Anyone know what the story is in nz regarding yellow headlights. I like the look of the old French market cars with their tinted lights, it conjures images of old Le Mans footage and continental travel in an era when that was exotic.

So firstly, is it legal here to tint your headlights, and secondly, what product to use?

I have an old Alfa with four headlights, so was thinking of doing the inner high beam lights. There's maybe even a removable filter that can be removed to keep WOF man happy.

    cheers for any advice/tips.
