  1. 3 shattered piston rings. All the wrong size too. Someone did the dodgey before I got the car it seems. All is well, had some machined and fit. Also had a complete rebuild, bearings and shaved head and all.

However! Yes, however! The car won't turn over. Hahaha. The starter is too weak the roll the engine over. It was sweet with the compression about 50% but now it's right up there it's acting weak.

Tried new brushes and bearing, still nothing.

Best I go for another one, yea? I've purchased a second hand one for $70. Really hoping it works and is strong enough.

If not, I guess it's new for another $220ish.

    Ugh!

  2. And it says it right there on yours too. They will be the lesser of the two. The one that is the minimum. ... Sooo... if your market value is 8K but your agreed value is 10K. They will only pay you the lesser. Is 8K lesser than 10K? Yes. So you get 8k.

  3. I didn't say all, just read the fine print before you commit and also ask them about the agreed value.

If you go down the market value / agreed value which ever is the lesser your bound to get fucked over.

Also look at additional excesses etc, dunno how old you are but a lot of companies tack heaps on if you claim. Under 25, inexperience driver, special excess for your vehicle type, previous incidents etc

I'm glad some people have some sense. I was just reading a massive article today and it got me thinking.

The guy got underpaid what he was expecting and was totally pissed, bagging the company big time.

When realistically. He bought the product. He chose to insure with that company. He paid appropriate premium for his chosen cover.

Yet he was pissed. Like he got ripped off.

He got the taste the pie before he bought it, and after he ate it, he was pissed off.

    The f@#&?

  4. A lot are like this. No point going agreed as half the time you just pay more and get reemed when you claim.

Not all companies do this though. Usually it's specific insurers, like performance or classic.

General insurers more often than not offer you the insurance you're probably expecting. You insure for 10k, as long as the car is in good condition before the time of the loss you are entitled to that 10k.

  5. I have my Daily drivers insured with AMI. Just changed to them because they are cheaper than AA. That was the only reason.

I have four 'old school' cars insured with Protecta Insurance because of the policy small print because small print is important when insuring old cars.

Proteca insurance will pay the lesser of the agreed value and the market value, so just be careful you know what your market value is and make sure it's relative to your agreed value.

  6. That's what I've noticed with a lot of classic car and performance car insurers.

They say it's agreed sum insured, but what you need to take note of is this "we will pay the lesser of the agreed sum insured or the market value".

This means that if your car is agreed sum insured for 10k and you have a total loss they will research into the vehicle to find out what it's current market value is, taking into account kilometers, mods, etc. If their "market" value works out at 8k, you will only end up with 8k for your car. If their market value works out to be beyond 10k, you will only get 10k.

Just make sure you know this!

General insurers like AMI and State do agreed value. So you agree to the value, that's what they'll pay as long as the car is kept in a reasonable condition at the time of the loss.

  7. Yea. I have but I'm interested in "why" people have insured with said specific company.

I also wanted to see what peoples thoughts were on their "agreed sum insured" and if they know exactly what that means.

You nominate a figure based on the cars value, but do you actually get that?

  8. Got some feedback from my dad's mechanic.

Broken piston rings. Had absolutely no idea. Car has been running fine for ages!

Oh well. Getting fixed, back on the road tomorrow.

    Crikey!

  9. Thanks.

I'll get those replaced tonight if I can.

What's involved with a vaccum leak, I've never worked on anything like that before. A bit of a novice but I'm learning.

  10. Hey guys,

Escort started misfiring and pulling the other night but stopped for a few days until yesterday when in first gear she's just spitting and sputtering and misfiring and has become a bit old heavy paperweight in my driveway.

Checked carby, looks clean and seems to be jetting fine.

    Checked fuel-filter, clean as.

Looked over dizzy leads, look fine on ends but need to actually test them.

    Plugs are brand new.

Opened up dizzy and noticed the breaker points seem to be a bit worn out, actually quite worn out so I'll pop those in tonight fingers crossed.

Has anyone had a similar issue where their engine was almost like it wasn't firing on 1 cylinder? Such a rough idle, sometimes won't even stay on and spitting and sputtering and won't rev at all without hiccuping and dying?

Just a quick heads up, thanks guys!
