  1. Does anyone know what is the best 5 speed Toyota gearbox to go with a 186 holden motor. what else would I need to get or do to convert to this ,it has currently got the holden 3 speed column change in it. cheers

  2. Thanx for feedback .I like the old school look eg the HQ and I mostly like the way it drives/rides  but I also want to combine a more modern efi engine 2.5 /3.0 lts and 5 speed box for the benefits eg reliability fuel efficiency and power when I want it but mostly a cruiser., so once its set up I can hop in and drive it .I only have basic mechanical skills therefor hav to get someone to do it for me.I have been down this road before and been badly screwed by mechanics who say they will deliver the world charge like wounded buffalos and actually do a crap job. I enquired about converting my 186 to EFI and got told by a local EFI guy it would cost at least $ 10000 wtf.

  3. Hi im hoping for some insite and ideas .I have a 73 HQ Belmont.Im currently doing up the exterior ,repainting it. It has the bench seat which I like and don't want to lose. Its running and I love driving it ,wanting to do it up for a pretty much daily driver. It has a tired 186 motor and a 3 stage column shift, so its pretty gutless power wise.

Im thinking of what would be good options going forward. I could have the engine reconditioned ,and Ive heard some Toyota 5 speed gearboxes can go in these,?. However im a bit over carburators, and I like fuel injection ,for better efficiency, starting and power. I do like V6s

What about a modern fuel injected V6 between 2.5 and 3 lt so its got a bit of get up and go, if I want to pass someone but is reasonably fuel efficient and not too expensive to run for just cruising around. I guess it would be best to find a motor and manual gearbox combo together, would need to be low kms preferably so I don't have to waste more money fixing it up.

Im not a purist so not bothered what make of motor. I want to keep my bench seat so will this cause probs fitting a manual gearbox.

I would have to get a mechanic to do most of the work for me, here in Christchurch. I would also love to make it power steering as well eventually anyway. My budget needs to be under $ 10000.
