  1. As a matter of interest, from the mid 1960s to sell cars into the Skippyland market without serious taxes they had to have a local content. Volvo therefore assembled cars at VWs plant in Melborne. 140, 240, and 700 series were made there until they could bring in cars without tax penalty. They say around 65,000 Volvo cars were produced there in total. Many of these were 142s but the Aussi only model of 242 GT amounted to only 600 units with about 25 autos being made in the factory in 1979 and some handful of the 1980 models modified by dealers to customer wishes. The 242 GT mentioned as being rough when viewed in Tremaine Ave getting its heater fixed seems to be a car from a Canadian plant. Although I might be wrong, all Aussi 242 GTs had an Aussi compliance plate affixed to the left hand strut tower, that car does not have it nor has one ever been there. As for being rough it is not for its age and only has minimal rust in the same areas as all 240 series cars seem to have.

As a member of the Volvo Club, I think as a group if one was to stick to a Fransavic type copy they might even help you, we are all getting older but most of the membership do not like what they see as hotrods! A proper rally car being used for rallying is quite a different matter. There is another option, a 120 or 122 S Amazon would make a great period rally car and are about, or even the 140 running geared, 5/44 for sale on Trademe in the Hawkesbay.

  3. To my knowledge there are two 242 GT Volvos in the Manawatu that are on the road at the moment with another in a shed somewhere. As for 142 S cars in the Manawatu there was a left hooker owned by a fella at Massey which was sold to Christchurch 2 years ago and another cot case which is parked up. These both have the B 18 engine in them being pre 1970 models. As for 144, 144 E or 144 S models, my brothers 1973, 144 race car with petrol injection now resides since last Christmas in the South Island. This car had a B 20 E engine in it and was/is on the Volvo Adventures site article when it was still in Skippyland. I am informed that up in Pohangina there is a 144 being restored over time although I have never seen it. There is also another 1973, 144 left hooker on the road in very average condition that arrived in the Manawatu just after last Christmas and is used as general transport at present but maybe restored at some later date. This car has the B 20 A engine in it and was delivered new in the Lebanon which had crap roads so seems to have the 4.56 ratio diff in it which limits top end speed somewhat.

    As for putting a T 5 into a 140 series I think it unwise, the B 210/230 T engine out of a 740 series would make much more sense and a 240 series car would come with power steering already attached, the 140s never had any. Over horsepower a 140 and you might regret it in time. The car works well with around 150 hp, a well speced 2.3 T 5 engine with NA cams and an ARD tune, a 18T gives 450 hp. The T 5 engine is awesome I agree but the 240 that took the Wellington Street race some years ago was and is too, build a 240. Their parts are still everywhere too.
