super66 Posted August 16 Posted August 16 Hey all, Just want peoples opinions at this point (pun intended). So after buying my MGB, pretty much everyone who knows something about cars has been telling me I should swap the points out for a electric ignition module...because apparently points are very unreliable. I'm not sure if these people know from experience about this, or if its just something they've read or been told. So I did some googling and bought a Powerspark kit and chucked it in...but no matter what I tried, I couldn't get a spark at the plugs. I suspect I have too much resistance in the loom, or a bad earth somewhere, although I cleaned up the ones I could find. I bypassed the ballast in the ignition wire that goes to the coil, so I know its not that. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it worth plugging away at it to get the module to work? At least points are simple and can be replaced easily...the module is a black box to me... Thanks in advance, Chris Quote
locost_bryan Posted August 16 Posted August 16 Have a good read of the guides. What am I missing? - Plus 2 Discussions - LotusElan.net When my Powerspark was installed by the engine reconditioner, they had to adjust the distance between the sensor head and the sensor ring to get it to work. 2 Quote
tortron Posted August 16 Posted August 16 Do you have the correct ohms coil as well? Could be dead on arrival, but its usually me who gets those 3 3 Quote

sr2 Posted August 17 Posted August 17 We had a Powerspark ignition kit fitted to a 1954 Bentley, from memory it was a Delco distributor. It was a quick, uncomplicated install with improved starting, tuning and drivability. locost-bryan's advice makes good sense, revisit the install guide and check the sensor gap. Make sure you let us know what the issue was when you solve it! 2 Quote

Break down more often but easier to fix when it does. 4 Quote
super66 Posted August 17 Author Posted August 17 Hey everyone, Thanks for the replies! I'll go through the links listed and double check everything...I've probably just messed something up. I had a 1.5 omn coil and put a 3.0 coil in there when i ditched the ballast wire, so I think that's OK. Didn't think to check the gap though, I'll give that a go... I'll get back to the everyone once I've sorted it out... cheers! 5 Quote
