johnnyfive Posted August 7 Posted August 7 Alright so seeing as the East Cape hasn't fallen off in a while, we should be all set to go ride bikes and look at horses or whatever. If you're reading this you probably know what you're in for, attempting to avoid busier roads where possible, between 200-300km each day. Please sort your own accomodation obviously, any questions let rip. What more do you need to know? December 2026 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th. ~1000km Thats right 4 days and 3 nights of wombling around the sticks. Day 1 Thursday 3/12/26 Google Maps link day 1 Same starting location as ever, day one this year is a cut and paste from the TeUrewera Undertaking in 2019. Approx 200km, with a maximum of ~70km between fuel retailers. Could do hot chip lunch at Kopuriki servo like previous, or brave a lunch at Murupara. I'd imagine most will stay at the Waikaremoana Holiday Park, cabins/bunks/tent sites available. Book your spot on the DOC website Day 2 Friday 4/12/26 Google Maps link day 2 Day 2 is includes the short day of Day 2 in 2019, but with a loop through Matawai that adds half of two other days on again. A slightly longer day than we've done previously. Approx 325km, and ~170km max between fuel. If we get cracking I'm hoping to do lunch and refuel in TeKaraka. Gisborne got loads of places to stay, The Waikanae Beach Motel seems to be an old fav Day 3 Saturday 5/12/26 Google Maps link day 3 Day 3 is similar to day 2 in 2021 Head the inland route north from Gisborne, duck down to the coast for lunch at Tokomaru Bay, peel up 35 to Te Araroa with optional side journey to the easternmost point before bunking down at Hicks Bay (or thereabouts). Approx 250km and about 130km between furthest fuel stops. Spoilt for choice for accommodation, between the Hicks Bay Lodge book online, or the TeAraroa Holiday park just over the hill (you'll have to email Bill or call I dunno) Choice of burger caravan at Holiday Park for dinner, or pub/restaurant at Lodge. Day 4 Sunday 6/12/26 Google Maps link day 4 Day 4 is an easy day and much the same as Day 3 in 2021 buzz on up SH35 back home. Approx 185km, no idea about fuel, but it'll be sweet. Maybe lunch in ? Or push on closer to Opotiki for an early finish. I need to add, If the Motu Road is declared likely to be open (pending update in Sept) when we are coming through, there is the possibility that we alter Day 1 & 2 slightly. An amended Day 1 would include a day ride loop starting and finishing in/near Whakatane. This would mean cancelling your accomodation at Waikaremoana on night 1 (Thursday 3rd), and staying somewhere in/at Whakatane instead. I now understand that there is potentially a cancellation fee involved at Waikaremoana, my bad. We'll see what the council decide regarding the Motu Road as time goes on. An amended Day 2 would include the Motu road in the morning, and finishing in Gisborne as planned. Day 3 & 4 would be unchanged.
