CarolsHusband Posted July 26 Posted July 26 Hello more knowledgeable folks. This may be a stupid question, but at the risk of appearing moronic I shall ask.... Removing the EGR pipe from the exhaust manifold is proving a bit of a twat and I reckon despite much heating, quenching & oiling I'm about to snap the lower bolt off. The three nuts came loose fine. Rather than having to the take off the exhaust manifold (and the possibility of that turning to dog shit) is there any mileage in just blocking up the vacuum pipe that goes to the valve but leave all the wiring in place ? This may appear to be massively lazy and you'd be right. Would it confuse the ECU & throw up errors, etc ? Youtube has managed to cancel its usefulness out with opposing opinions. The car's a '97 Surf if that helps Chur Quote
Raizer Posted July 26 Posted July 26 Slip a plate between the EGR valve and the intake manifold. /Have you removed the intake to clean it out yet? 1 1 Quote
CarolsHusband Posted July 26 Author Posted July 26 I'm gonna do that once the EGR gubbins is off. I'd thought about just blanking it off but I'd still have to get the bolt out to remove the thing to slip the blank in so I might as well carry on doing it properly after that. So just blocking the Vac pipe is a no go then ? Quote
sheepers Posted July 26 Posted July 26 yea you can do that or just leave it all connected and cable ties to something out of the way. theres a pic in my build thread i think? please hold caller...... 1 Quote
sheepers Posted July 26 Posted July 26 this thing can just dangle with the vac still connected. 1 Quote

Can just block the vacuum but a lot of the EGR valves are leaking by now (my 96 was gunked up enough not to seal and the one off a 98 I pulled apart was stuck open). Like @sheepers I also just left the vacuum solenoid plugged in and cable tied it out of the way, but I couldn't leave the vacuum supply line attached as it wanted to make a hell of a noise whenever the solenoid opened lol. Had to T the vac lines going to the big dash pot on the back of the throttlebody and run it off just one of the solenoids that's mounted to the boost crossover tube, keeps it open when the EGR runs and it would normally close. 1 Quote
CarolsHusband Posted July 26 Author Posted July 26 Thanks man, I reckon I'll try and fashion a something to slip in. Maybe I'll get a gasket off that internet & use it for a template. Hopefully I'll be able to get the inlet manifold off with the valve still in place. It's all studs so I'll be pulling in two directions which will be fun. Obviously it'd be easier with the other end of the EGR disconnected, but that's back to square one. I'm sure it'll be fine, one way or t'other. I have some nice new injectors with Denso written on them, so I might as well try and do a proper job. Three glow plugs were vaguely working but the one at the back that a tosser to get to was old and dead. 2 Quote
Raizer Posted July 26 Posted July 26 Should be able to force it back off the intake enough to clear, well in a Hiace you can at least but they've got a big removable panel behind the engine that gives clear access to it all. /Pull the EGR valve studs out of the intake manifold and it won't have to be pulled back as far. It's well worth pulling the intake off fully and cleaning it and the intake ports out, mine had a fresh engine fitted a few years before I pulled mine and it already had almost 10mm of shit built up coating the ports etc! 1 Quote
cletus Posted July 26 Posted July 26 If its got studs and you cbf removing much stuff you could make yourself a block off plate with cutouts , negating the need for removal I think thats what I did on my van, left the pipe there and all the sensors etc. Used a piece of thin sheet metal from memory Although I did remove the throttle valve butterfly because without the egr there, was not enough air flow for it to idle properly Worth it as it used heeeeeeaps less fuel Thusly 1 1 Quote

CarolsHusband Posted July 27 Author Posted July 27 @cletus Thank you, I've sent that off to the CNC department for fabrication. @Raizer Thank you ! Now I have no excuse not to do it properly. Well, except for my general slapdashery. Quote
