VitesseEFI Posted September 14 Posted September 14 Is this Jag injection you planning to use or something aftermarket? The original Megasquirt “Megamanual” used to be a superb introduction to the basic principles of FI and ignition control. That was in 2004…. It still exists but it’s grown a bit (a lot) so picking the basics out is harder now…. https://www.megamanual.com/mtabcon.htm#wire 1 Quote

One of the benefits of the lucas (shudder) early EFI is that it isn't that complicated. I would love to go aftermarket and perhaps look at a supercharger, custom intake plenum, or ITB's but really even this flintstone EFI is a steep learning curve for me so I'll be happy to do what I can do. I know of a guy who modified the dizzy with that of a Rover V8 one to run on triple sidedrafts. The dizzy as I found out on the weekend is basically gutted of all electrical stuff and has a rotor and shaft. So provides a mechanical spark only from the dizzy and that's all. Sounds cool but even more work! 4 Quote
Thousand Dollar Supercar Posted September 15 Posted September 15 I was seriously looking at getting rid of the Lucas Flintstone EFI on my AJ6, until I finally figured out it it just had a failing crank position sensor. Aftermarket EFI was going to give me: the ability to run closed loop / an exhaust oxygen sensor (which your later AJ6 already has?) the ability to advance the timing (conservative from factory because Flintstone EFI has no knock sensor?) connectivity tunability hopefully a fixed idle who knows what else - the ability to run a valved exhaust and a crackle tune? 😆 But I'm still on Lucas power, and the car still gets down the road. While your new engine is out of the car, I imagine you'll be doing any maintenance items which would normally be challenging? There's apparently a casting gasket on the back of the head which normally sits up against the firewall, and sometimes I think about wondering whether to consider getting around to changing it.. How about the Andy bracket mod? 1 Quote
BiTurbo228 Posted September 15 Posted September 15 I bumped into Damo on faceache and we were discussing this. His engine's an '89 build date for a '90 registration, but comes from Japan. The UK spec of that year won't have a cat (and thus no O2 sensor) but we couldn't get an official answer on whether a Japanese spec car would have done. Interwebs says that Japan started mandating catalytic converters in the 70s so it may well have done, but no idea if that extended to import cars. Probably. Who knows. Not me. The guy who makes the Andy Bracket (Andy, funnily enough) has stopped making them. But he didn't patent anything so others have started selling them. The ones sold by Simply Performance and co only fit the late 93/94 AJ6s, though you can shim them to fit the earlier cars (I think it's shimming the sensor up a bit, but I don't know for sure). Supposedly there's a 'David Marks Garage' in Nottingham that does 3D printed ones that fit the earlier cars. I'd expect it's something that one of the Oldschool CAD wizards could knock up exceptionally easily. It's literally just a bracket that moves the crank position sensor 5 degrees round to advance the timing. There's boatloads of carbed AJ6s running in the Jaguar grassroots racing series here in the UK. Some on triple Webers, others on bike carbs. But yeah, simplest option is to just do a bit of wiring. Early stuff like this really isn't rocket science. 4 Quote
dmulally Posted September 15 Author Posted September 15 @Thousand Dollar Supercar interesting you mention that gasket at the back of the head. I recall when I did the head gasket in the XJS I did that at the same time and cannot for the life of me see how it could be done without taking the engine out. I'm actually considering if I should do the head gasket or not. The engine has only done circa 25k kms so is pretty new. But has sat in a workshop for about a billion years so will be crusty. I'll have a think about it but after having blown a head gasket on a 100k km XJS (and two other cars being the Imp and the Mitsi curiously enough in recent times) I am a little cautious. I even use the fancy radiator water and not my bore water...anymore 💀 I'll look at the Andy bracket when I know the engine works properly but unless it improves torque and fuel economy I don't think I'll bother. The MkX is a slug and the AJ6 in any guise won't change that. I had a quick rummage in the dark last night for the o2 sensor plug and couldn't find it but there are a few plugs dangling about. This weekend I'll go over it properly and label it all. But did somebody say bike carbs...? 3 Quote
dmulally Posted 1 hour ago Author Posted 1 hour ago Dropped this off at the engineers. He didn't swear too much at me so I'm confident. 1 Quote
