dmulally Posted July 22 Author Posted July 22 So I was a busy beaver annoying people this morning and got a really good steer on a couple of things. One is I brought my spare radiator in from the Jag parts bin and the chap at the radiator shop showed me the tag where he himself re-cored it in the 90's. Blimey. I bought it from a guy in the area a few years ago so it adds up. Anyway he said that he'll be able to modify the inlet/outlet to suit the AJ6 easily. Also spoke with WAGs who have done my gearbag stuff in the past on the chev. Put forward my case and he suggested the R151. He thinks the T5 is getting too long in the tooth and the R154 is overkill and the shifter too far back. I did mention the stock box and he said whilst it will take the power easily, a rebuild is a $7k exercise including the OD unit and only getting harder to get bits. 6 Quote
dmulally Posted August 5 Author Posted August 5 Going to run a tape measure over this tomorrow. Need to measure width and length of input shaft. @Tiger Tamer's antics on the Minx has me actually giving a shit about this stuff now. But probably for this it would more be about not being long enough. Anybody have any good or bad experiences with the CD009? One too many gears for me but interwebs suggests strong enough. 3 Quote
xsspeed Posted August 5 Posted August 5 not used but its my current plan for rb build, supposedly t56/tr6060 equivalent in stock form so yeah pretty strong, they take abuse from drift spec VQs errday I'd say its stronger than you need, they arent small either 2 Quote
xsspeed Posted August 5 Posted August 5 I'd have thought a t5 would be fine? what about a nissan small box, Fs5w71c (rp71c) from a rb20/rb25? they arent too pricey, nice and light and are fine behind an N/A RB25. they last ok with 20dets with the wick turned up (until they strip 3rd lol) Quote
xsspeed Posted August 5 Posted August 5 /just saw your tunnel pic, i very much doubt a cd009 is fitting in there. i can grab some dimensions of RB box if you want but internet should be able to provide 1 Quote
HumberSS Posted August 5 Posted August 5 Bonus too is 71c Navara petrol boxes can still be had for relatively cheap. I found one at pick apart for nix. Quote

It looks like a stubby gearbox so it may land where I want it. Cheers for the RB box heads up. Loads for sale and cheap but the ads usually say they have swapped for a "big box" which Im not sure I know what it is, but if in the Nissan range it probably sits between the RB20 and CD009. Purely guessing however. Jag box looks like this: Quote
Bearded Baldy Posted August 5 Posted August 5 Psst psst put one in your luggage next visit westward. The dont charge the wank tax that people do here. 1 Quote
BiTurbo228 Posted August 5 Posted August 5 If you're looking at $2000, are you sure a Jag box isn't within reach? Not sure on the exchange rate to be fair. Getrag 265s are a little more expensive as they're used on BMWs too, but the 290s have an integral bellhousing. Still not small boxes though. And I suppose you'd probably have shipping on top of the purchase price, which might be chunky. 1 Quote

My budget for a toyota was about $1k as I still have to get it inspected properly and then the adapter sorted which will start ticking the price up. But this one seems to be a lot stronger and a lot closer than much else. Was offered a R151 for $1500 today without a yoke. Shit's expensive these days. 1 Quote
xsspeed Posted August 5 Posted August 5 Yeah big box is a normal swap for a rb25+t/comes normally on the rb25det, they are pretty stout, again more than what I'd guess you need (smol vs big below) 1 1 Quote
BiTurbo228 Posted August 5 Posted August 5 Would something like an S-Type or BMW getrag be affordable in NZ? They're dirt cheap over here, but that doesn't necessarily translate. They're big but they're relatively stubby which might help. The 5 speeds especially so, though they have a 1:1 5th. That's sortable on a Jag if you can get 2.88 gears for the rear end though (the S Type was the one with the IRS wasn't it?). 1 Quote

The 290's still command a premium however. I do indeed have an IRS and in the parts bin is a 3.31. It presently has a 3.5 or 3.7 I think. Quote

xsspeed Posted August 5 Posted August 5 Looking again at your pics you need something with shifter quite far forward? Iirc there was a 'stubby' box maybe for a d21 that was a 71c? Quote
