W58 fits in my Vitesse and that’s not a big car. Has nice ratios too with a decent amount of overdrive in 5th.

Pretty rare (were never common) and expensive in the UK now though. Dunno about NZ. Bizarrely certain Lotii are one of the better sources now.

Suspect an R154 will be too big.

Been a while since I've seen a w58 for sale but you wouldn't get change from 1k I'd think if not more

Seems to be a toss up between a w50 and a T5 for what's around that's easy to find.

I am still open to using the stock box but if it kicks a leg out of bed in the future I'm pretty much rooted. Where a T5 or toyota will be easy as to source by comparison.

Whilst a mitsi box is on the maybe pile, this bloke on TM wasn't having any of the 4 speed jag box. I'm going to take this as a sign.

In other news I scored this bellhousing and a flywheel. That should make adapting any new gearbox a little easier depending on input shaft length.

A w50 isn't worth 1000$

A w55 for 400$ is good . Might be buggered though

Even 900 for a w58 seems like ok money

I'm going to assume anything is buggered. Knowing my engineering shop they'll have it for 6 months at least so I want just anything really to get it started.

Then when it gets closer to the time find a better one and have it rebuilt.

My social media has stopped showing grindr ads and started showing me brand new r154 ads which is predatory. Although I think they are too big to fit fnar fnar.

T5s will put the gear stick a long way back depending what gearbox you end up using.   (i should have used one when i did a 1UZ into falcon due to all the tailshaft/speedo etc would have just worked probably, but chose the W55 due to it being better ... probably.. if i had my time over i'd choose the T5 due to less custom stuff. )

based on your bellhousing though, then the input shaft will be something to consider, and the commodore V6 T5 does have a very long input shaft, (so does the ford V8 one from the E series falcon)

There is a different shifter housing that fits the ford T5, not sure about the holden V6 one, but i assume so? from the USA spec Chev S10?  (not cheap anymore due to age/scarcity..shipping etc)

The W55 W56 W57 W58 have different stick positions, with the 58 being mounted further rear in most cases, i had the W55 in my falcon because it was available and cheap at the time.. gear shift feels lovely compared to agricultural T5 (overdrives vary slightly between them, not much though)

see input shaft length mentioned on T5s, that looks like it might need a commodore V6 T5 for eg.

Does Conversion Components (Colin Dray) still exist. Google says he does W5X -> AJ6 bell housings. Also Dellow in Oz….

W5X remote is relatively easy to mod but there are several factory lengths as stated. Also several different factory bell housings.

One thing to watch with the W5X is they (the ones I’ve seen at least) have a pretty short input shaft, whereas your new bellhousing looks reasonably deep…. I have a W58 I can measure if you need anything.

Cheers mate.

I've already spoken to my long suffering engineer and prefer to keep my money local. Plus as much as he'll deny it to anybody who asks, he loves my shitty projects that stink up his shop.

Interesting that it's short. I dont pick up the engine and bellhousing for a few weeks but when I get it Ill be able to check in a jiffy then send you a flirty pm ta.

From what I can see, those guys only advertise bellhousings for "the Jaguar 6cyl" meaning the XK engine, not the AJ6 / AJ16. I'm watching this thread now because I wouldn't mind being free of the whining auto in my 3.6 XJ-S.

Likewise. That’s not to say that I won’t take a commercial solution if it’s time/cost effective though.

Ok, that’s interesting. Though it might be they just haven’t updated their lists/websites. Didn’t find either of them to be good communicators and when they did I didn’t like their answers anyway ($$$$$$$!)

W56 possibly most plentiful as used in 2WD Hilux etc. was possible to buy them new quite recently. Ratios are a bit crap though.

@BiTurbo228 put a BMW 6 pot deez in an XJ40. Was a bit of a mission, but seems to have been very successful. Not sure if he put a build thread on here but the is one on RetroRides.

I did! I can thoroughly recommend it. Excellent car (though is currently off the road with ABS problems).

I probably wouldn't do it exactly the same way unless you don't mind a car that's a bit rough around the edges (which is unusual in Jag ownership). I used a solid flywheel so it could take ~400whp (it's currently at about 325whp and is decently quick already), but if you're happy with 250hp and a boatload of torque then a dual mass would make for a much more civilised driving experience. I think you can probably go a bit higher on later manuals, or ones from an E60, but I don't know all that much about those. Or an auto is always an option. The oodles of torque really does suit the Jag driving experience, and it even sounds alright (which is surprising given it's a diesel).

The overall engine is definitely smaller than an AJ6 so is probably easier to fit, but the integrated air intake in the cam cover caused clearance issues with the XJ40 bay. I replaced it with one from an E60 535d which gives a lot more space.

I'm somewhat sceptical of the quoted weights there. Only because I've weighed the AJ6 (fully dressed, incl oil and whatever coolant was left in the block, plus a getrag 290) that I just pulled out of my Jag at 325kg.

52191543862_d05873e29f_b.jpg

Not that the ~195kg is incorrect, but you have to be really careful with engine weights to make sure folks are comparing apples-to-apples. I've got the Getrag 290 down as 49.9kg, which would put all the rest of it at ~275kg. That suggests to me that the 195kg figure is probably a bare block figure (including missing stuff like the flywheel). The crank alone of the 4.0l weighs 39kg (again, seen a picture of one on a scale). The whole engine's a bit of a monster (though if folks like Gareth Thomas are to be believed...which is a question in itself...they have a lot of potential).

Because I'm very nearly as much of a geek as @Roman I've started a database of engine weights I've found from a trawl of the interwebs, making sure to only include weights that are actually verified with a picture (rather than 'my mate's mum's dog said XYZ), what was actually on the engine at the time the picture was taken, and a link to the forum I found it on for people to verify (though sod's law loads of the links will be dead now because Photobucket and Facebook have done a pretty good job so far of killing the internet). I don't have a weight for a Ford SOHC 6, but if anyone has one I'd be happy to add it.

You and me both!

I've got a Getrag 290 for mine, but they're £££ now and quite rare, so if it goes up the tubes I'd like to know potential replacements!

Don't forget that that bit the bellhousing bolts to also unbolts from the block. If you need to shimmy around where the input shaft/crankshaft/starter/clutch end up then you can get something machined/laser cut to either change the depth or adapt to a different pattern. Definitely more expensive than just adapting the bellhousing to a different gearbox, but it's a good backup to have.
