Merc OM606 with a dpuk pump. 1 wire, 500hp on standard internals. Small straight 6 format

Sorted

This was my first thought also. Though much dollar as already mentioned and will turn your Jaguar box into swarf pretty quick.

Not sure that running either of the AJs on dizzy and carbs will net you enough mpg win over what you have to be worth the very considerable effort involved. Though the XK engines are notoriously inefficient.

Isn’t “LD28” the traditional OS answer to this question?

I did a bit of searching on the AJ6 on carbs and I think youre right about the economy of effort.

I reached out to a guy I know who did the loom for my M57 and he didnt want a bar of it which makes me respect him even more. Owing to having a lucas ECU, wiring mess, and likely shipping in a flywheel and manual ECU (guessing here), slanted engine, it might be too hard. They sure are cheap though.

Sounds like youre not fussed if petrol or deez, but leaning toward deez? I guess its a heavy lump, so the 3.4/3.8 moves it along quite well. Was wondering what jap equivalent could be out there that is caveman tech enough for your approval and has the capacity, but nothing springs to mind (RBs, 1J, 1G etc all prob a little small/to high tech). This really leaves the Barra. If stock car guys can make a barra run on carbs then youll be fine..

I think there is a Barra in the shed next door. But having briefly looked into it, it's about as much fun as converting an LS to carb and dizzy. Too much faffing about.

They are future proofed though for parts. Same as LS.

small block Chevrolet or Ford.

Intech with a carb and dizzy.

265???

Add dedicated LPG to the above for simplicity and reduced running costs.

^ Correction on the Barra please.

Barra's have to use ECU for ignition - oil pump & distributor drive is in different location, cannot use the XF Dizzy with the gear drive flipped on dizzy. Just FYI Barra's cannot be used in stockcars as they are Twin Cam. SOHC only - this is why Intechs are used.

Intech's (EL-AU series) that can take a distributor (xf dizzy for instance) , modify multipoint manifold for a 2bbl carb holley or webber etc- Would certainly be easy enough to do. Brother and I re-use them in derby cars we've had

Personally though you'll spend more on the ECU side of things for a Barra, but is a far better choice, I'd assume you'd go to a nice smooth late model Auto rather than keeping it manual?

Barra's themselves can be picked up cheaply, but the money is in the ECU side.

Ultimately you want something with ease of getting parts in the future and common. Problem with RB,JZ is they like the Intech are getting a bit long in the tooth now..

Thanks for the info on the Barra. I'm not a fan of automatics in fun cars. It won't be towing anything bigger than a small tinny or box trailer so I don't think I'll be abusing the clutch too hard.

As for longevity, I think I'm aiming for something really common that was mass sold here. Just yesterday I picked up a sump gasket off the shelf for a 186 red at Repco. I don't want to be arguing with some 18yo about number plates when I'm 65. I'm too tired for that carry on.

It's only limited by imagination. I have an ED33 bus engine in the corner of the shed I got ages ago so by my man maths that is free. But it probably only revs to about 1500rpm and will rattle my teeth out. Jag Barry's would slam their thermos' down in disgust if I ever chooched by a club meet in the town square at Marty.

The 1kz and TD27 are right up there for initial price point along with a series 3 4.2xk but the xk will probably get twice the fuel usage. Chev is backup option as I have a rebuilt 283. Also poor on fuel even with LPG.

That's your answer right there. Whack on a Yella Terra head with triple carbs and you're away laughing.

Is that the mooring weight for his whaler ?

There is a dereg ea falcon with 5speed (should be a t5), over your side of the ranges going pretty cheap. Would be a good donor.

And getting the ecu flashed to ignore smartlock is also cheap these days.

My AJ6 comes from the era of oldschool hydraulic automatics. I don't know if that means its Lucas ECU is the same as in manual cars, but at least it doesn't need to talk to a TCU. It has an AFM (early AJ6s measured manifold vacuum which was apparently a disaster), no O2 sensor, and a basic distributor with a single coil and a separate ignition module. I was all set to convert it to an aftermarket ECU before I figured out that the crank position sensor was responsible for its misfiring, so today I'm still running on 1980s Lucas power.

My AJ6 only gets down to 10l/100km on the open road, and around town it's probably 15l/100km - perhaps not a big enough improvement for an engine swap aimed at economy?

Agree, but I'd take an auto and/or some terrible V8 before a diesel or an EV conversion. The character and the noise are too important - without those, you don't really have a fun car. I'd pay the fuel economy penalty up to a point. Does anyone ever convert the Jag XK engine to EFI, and does that make it any less rubbish?

I dont recall ever driving my old XJS AJ6 around town but it was around the 10-12 mark consistently. Loved it. If I could have swapped that to manual I would have taken the S type to the scrappy. But alas it was too hard to try and find bits so I sold it to fund unemployment. Beautiful car to drive. Just a little boring for me.

I did a cert check on a s type a few months ago which has a 327 in it

Bit of a tight fit, and the steering interfered with the oil pan a bit

Also not sure how it will go with a brake test due to tiny disc brakes

Is there anything in particular that makes the XK engines so inefficient? Would some head work and a basic EFI system net some economy gains? I know you're looking to avoid wiring which is fair tbh but maybe that would be less overall work than an engine swap?

The series 3 XK has 1980's EFI but the manifolds wont work on my head. That's if it fits at all.

I think the reason for inefficiency is that it is essentially a post war fast production engine. When designing the 3.4 they had no idea about the Straight of Hormuz or Epstein files and their impact on fuel prices.

If I were going to pissfart about with EFI I'd just go AJ16 and rocket about.

Interesting you mention the brakes.

I have never been happy with how it stops but with the rear brakes a pain to work with on where they are I'm not interested in putting my hoist out of commission for too long whilst I have little time to work on it. I have it booked into a brake specialist in town to have a look. It'll pass a wof but doesnt fill me with confidence for a cert.

Apparently volvo twin pots are an easy swap on the fronts but being Jag there are loads of expensive off the shelf options.
