Do you guys actually keep track of what your cars cost you?

Was having this conversation with a mate the other day. I know roughly what I spend on fuel, but if you asked me what I've spent on servicing, tyres, rego, WoF and random repairs over the last year I'd have no idea. Every time I tried keeping a spreadsheet I'd stick with it for a month then forget about it. Ended up building a small app called Kilvo just so I could keep all that stuff in one place and see where the money was going. Made me wonder if anyone actually tracks this stuff properly, or if most people just fix things when they break and try not to think about the total)))

Curious what everyone else does. Spreadsheet? Notebook? App? Or just wing it?

Would be keen to hear how you guys keep on top of it

Spreadsheet.

One sheet is the budget, add up all the car related items once a year, then calculate how much to set aside each fortnight. We break it down a bit further - totals for fuel, insurance, rego, maintenance. 

Another sheet to keep running total against budget. Enter expenses weekly, by downloading from ASB app.

Thats a pretty good way of doing it. Do you know what 1km actually costs you in the end?

And do you log things like parking fees as well, or just the usual car expenses?

It's fucking depressing. 

Last motor I built, (good while.ago now) I thought to myself, "this hasn't cost that much"

I started adding up what I'd spent. 

I figured I'd spend $11-1200 tops.

I got a bit over $3k, and decided to stop adding, and that I wouldn't bother adding that up again.......

Thats exactly the reason I started tracking it 🤣 Sometimes ignorance really is bliss when it comes to car projects. I reckon if I added up every receipt from a few of my old cars I'd probably regret it

All I know is bike parts are expensive but somehow still 1/10th the price of running a car

Rego $85

WOF $60

INSURANCE $300

PETROL $150

OIL/FILTER $60

Petrol to oil ratio is up with a British car in the 1960s

Only the main expenses, usually only pay for parking for shows or travel, so goes under that category. Don't work it out per km, but would be easy enough to do.

We just fix things as and when required. About the only thing I keep track of properly is fuel consumption on long hauls.

So by refusing to add it up, i keep the happy wife happy life idea going.

I started my build by making a spreadsheet of all the parts I need (so i knew what to order), all the costs, and a total. I got all those parts, and since then, nothing has been noted down because I dont want to know, and the scope has gone well beyond creep.

I do keep track of fuel costs for all my cars.

For me if would be like being a bad gambler, and keeping track of losses. Bit nope for me. I think I roughly added up one (super rough) for the purposes of insurance. Ain't no one believing a car that age, looking like that costs that much to build again...

I keep a log book for each car so I know what I did and when.

I keep a folder with receipts for everything I have spent on each car.

One of those cars is a rotary on its 3rd motor, so no, I don’t add up what I’ve actually spent.

Gotcha, yeah thats not too hard to work out I actually added that into my app
