westy Posted May 8 Posted May 8 Make fun of me here if you wish. PS I know I have 2 cars but really only 2x2/3rds cars. So if anyone has some parts or know of some I’m keen. Mostly stainless trims, bumpers (if you thought the cars were rough you should see the bumpers. https://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/92250-westy’s-gtos-so-much-rust/ Quote
CUL8R Posted May 8 Posted May 8 Not much help at all to you, have always liked these and been lucky enough to work on a couple over the years. Last one I got in a set of Work Wheels for ex Japan staggered fitment - guy is probably late 50's so quite cool to have done. Sadly they seem to be afflicted with tin worm worse than others of the period Whats the overall plans? Kudos on the workmanship so far! Quote
RUNAMUCK Posted May 8 Posted May 8 I always thought these were cool too. They definitely suffered from the rigors of 1970s Japanese build quality, and time though. (Neighbour over the back fence has one that's rotted out around the windows) I'm very jealous of your shed. (And your panel skills too) 1 Quote
westy Posted May 9 Author Posted May 9 Probably overestimating my panel skills. But yeah these things seem to dissolve pretty badly. Not that surprising when you start pulling them apart. Some of its unpainted ffs. 1 Quote
kiwi808 Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Yeah these have always been cool. Look so good with a bit of low and some small wheels. Wide body options also look awesome. In the mid 90’s there was a rotary one rocking around the North Shore. Have always wondered why more haven’t had the keg transplant. I figured it had something to do with steering box/rotary combo being awkward like in a B1600. Anyway, will follow along. Red is a nice colour for a coupe. 2 Quote
westy Posted May 9 Author Posted May 9 I am tempted by a rotary. But I’m a long way away from needing to think about it much haha. 1 1 Quote
lowlancer Posted May 10 Posted May 10 Probably cos the SOHC 4g63t was/is such an easy swap I reckon. I reckon a revvy small motor would be cool though, but even the 4g52 with twin side drafts can sound pretty sweet Please consider an MR rep for exterior. Farkn hot. 2 Quote
HumberSS Posted May 10 Posted May 10 Neat car, nice work too! The Datsun vibes of the era appear to also extend to the rustproofing! Quote
Bearded Baldy Posted May 10 Posted May 10 Awesome work man. I remember a black one of these (i think), in Thames with a v8 in it circa 2004ish. Quote
westy Posted May 10 Author Posted May 10 I guess the obvious answer is a DOHC 4g63t. But well before that I’ll need another car to go underneath the body. I’m thinking bmw e30 at this stage cause it’s close-ish in size and I’m familiar with them. Since both of the cars are dereged I really don’t want to go through repair cert and mod cert. 3 Quote

westy Posted May 12 Author Posted May 12 To be fair you could spend that and a lot more on any engine. 2 Quote
Bearded Baldy Posted May 13 Posted May 13 Applies to everything. But at least 4g and rotor parts are readily available. 1 Quote

westy Posted May 14 Author Posted May 14 Ta. I’ll keep it in mind. But like I say I’m a long way away from even thinking too much about it. Quote
kiwi808 Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Thinking about it is the best part because it doesn’t cost any money! So because we are just thinking about it, I would be genuinely interested to see if the keg fits and how much fab work it would take to work. Especially if you are going to strap a massive turbo to the side of it… 3 1 Quote
westy Posted June 2 Author Posted June 2 Seems I’m a sucker for 70s jap coupes. Probably all 70s coupes really but I like the size of the jap ones. 2 Quote
