Type49 Posted March 24 Posted March 24 Good morning fellow Old Schooler's . My son shared this to me as he know's i have always has a soft spot for them but have never owned one. It'll fit right in with my 106 Gti and his 306 Gti-6. Some of you may have already seen it on Marketplace or Trademe. For those that haven't here are some pics of before we collected it. 4 Quote

Type49 Posted March 30 Author Posted March 30 Have spent the last few days after work replacing the cambelt and water pump. Tensioner bearing was pretty noisy and belt definitely needed doing. Should go better too as cam timing was out a tooth... 6 Quote
Type49 Posted April 16 Author Posted April 16 Hi, so tried to start this and found the fuel pump was stuck, so I dropped the tank and drained all the stale fuel and removed the pump. Found lots of debris in the bottom of the tank so rinsed out the tank with some fresh fuel. Then I stripped the pump and found the vanes in the pump all gummed up with old fuel. Tested the motor and that worked fine so cleaned out and resembled the pump then bench tested it before I tried it. Result! Refitted the pump and then refitted the tank. Car now starts but cuts out after a few minutes, Trace the fault to the ignition coil. Replaced the coil and hey presto! No more cutting out. Next I added an engine flush and ran the car up to temperature then dropped out the old oil and replaced the oil filter. Decided to take it for a little drive round the block ( but not too quick as the front calipers were seized in the off position and the rears needed some serious adjusting..) Felt great to be driving it under its own power. Happy days ! 8 Quote
Type49 Posted April 16 Author Posted April 16 Next job was to sort the brakes so removed all the wheels and rear drums, found the previous owner had fitted new wheel cylinders and brake shoes but had not got around to bleeding the brakes. Removed the front calipers and stripped them on the bench, luckily the alloy pistons were ok and cleaned up perfectly. So just a really good clean and some new seal kits then resembled and refitted. Carried out a brake fluid flush and a good bleed. We now have a firm brake pedal and nice short handbrake. Much safer now for a quicker drive. 7 Quote
