fucking christ, what the fuck is wrong with me.

i bought this thing off Tom @yetchh about August of 2018. it was at my house for about 13 hours until i shipped it up to Denham's house in Wellsford, which then became Chris's house.

and there it has sat for the last 7 years. ive seen it twice since then. each time just long enough for me to forget how much work it needs. 

today NIck the sparky gave me a hand and we drug it out of its hole and now its in my workshop.

why.

anyeho, i have no fucking idea what im going to do with it (apart from sell it, that's a definite, im not keeping this thing) it goes, well it did 7 years ago. 

its got a 5MG and its manual. i have no idea what box is in it.

it looks way less shit in the photos than it actually is. it has no boot floor as is the fashion. paint is really fucked and there is some rust spots in the roof that need fixing. 

not much rust anywhere else which is nice.

Trying to get it to run. 

Got fuel into the pump and I've hit the injectors with a hammer. 

However I have discovered some modifications that have been made to the wiring loom, and I'm guessing that they were done by an unskilled worker.

I got the POS running. 

Not very well but it runs. 

Sounds really quite good tbh. No rattles or ticks and no exhaust leaks. 

Hard to believe  

Now I'm going to pull the front of it.

And then I pulled the front off it. 

It came apart really easily,  no rusted bolts,  no stripped screws, no drama at all. 

Im really liking what I'm finding,  this car is in pretty good nick tbh.

Check out how much rust there isn't on the bottoms of the front guards.

 

And just to really finish off a most pleasant disassemble process I found the good old magnetic spare key holder complete with original crown key.

ALWAYS HOARD SHIT

 

 

I'm changing the steering over to powersteering because I hoarded a PS steering box many moons ago.

I did the standard mod to the steering shaft to accommodate the larger steering box.

40mm is the distance if you need to do this. 

Bit of paint and everything is literally new . 

Except the rag joint, it looked a bit too fucked to go back in the car. 

But because I hoard useless junk I had another one that is slightly less fucked. 

Result.

Why steering box?

Because I needed to know what room i had available to make these. 

Obvs for the other engine/car but this is the best jig there is for making these.

Shit is tight.

Probably could have used smaller pipes. But I didn't. 

Anyway it fits and i can get them in and out, not easily but it can be done.

Motor out. 

Makes cleaning and painting it easier.

But also mainly because of our old friend Mr water pipe.

shockingly the one in the motor is rusty and fucked. 

it did have a screw holding one of the holes closed so that's good.  

I'll make a new one out of stainless.

Did a bit more disassemble. 

All the bolts for the fuel tank broke but everything else seems happy.

The car really is in good shape, there's a little bit of rust in the passenger sill but fuck all else.

Minor update. 

I've decided not to put the 5mg back in the car. It was running a Link G1 which was OK,  it ran,  but I'm just not a fan of something so basic and so old. 

So,  spend 3k on new link, wiring tuning etc?

No. 

Not when I've got a "good" complete 4M sitting there. 

The 4M came out of  @toy-mota's car and is probably OK. I have a brand new carb and some other stuff so that's whats going back in.

LITTLE HELP PLEASE!

 

im trying to find the paint code to get some of the original colour for this car.

the code on the build plate is 660. that should be a metallic green.

i cant find anything that references 660 as a paint code, nor can i find any modern equivalent paint codes that might be close.

 

if anyone can shed some light on a crossover code for 660 or a code that is a 1972 Toyota crown colour i would be most appreciative.

I found a water neck that has the "pipe round the back of the head" style heater feed. Only problem is that is fucked.  The pitting on the outlet was pretty next level. 

I figured i had nothing to loose by trying to weld it up. 

So I gave it a go. 

It was not easy.

But I fixed it. 

Now I'll make a new water feed pipe out of stainless steel for the 4M.

Hi.

My lathe is broken, has been for some time.  The 40 year old VSD shit itself. 

It's been 4 months trying to fix it. 

It's been fixed,  allegedly, but lathe still no go. 

Who gives a shit I hear you ask?

Well,  ordinarily I would have turned a new end for the water neck and welded that on instead of trying to fix it with weld. 

But when you don't have a lathe you can't do that.

As you can see the chassis and under floor is really dirty and had lots of surface rust that you would expect from a 53 year old car. 

I have really,  really pushed the boat out and i took the body off the chassis.

I stripped all the rust,  dirt and crud of the chassis and bottom of the car then I painted it all with an epoxy primer.

I've been working late into the early hours every day for two weeks to get this done. 

 

 

 

 

In a completely unrelated story my neighbour owns a blasting company that does underside blasting and painting of cars and trucks, and I highly recommend him.

The company is Blast All LTD. Toby is a fucking gc and I've seen his work and is top spec.

Make a new boot floor.

Used the English wheel to put some extra metal into the sheet where i needed it. 

Then used the bead roller to put in the shape. 

I could only make one half at a time because I don't have a 500000mm throat bead roller. 

It's bent as fuck but it'll come around. 

Still heaps to do but this is a good start.

Made the rest of the floor bits then it was time to stick it all back together. 

The rails that hold the tank straps don't go all the way back and reliay on the floor to hold them up. 

I needed them to be a bit stronger than that so I put a piece of 40x5 flat bar inside the rail.  That kept it flat and strong. 

Then I started welding it where it touched, starting in the middle at the front, trimming the overlap as I went. 

I used some self tappers to pull the floor down into the rails and welded it on. 

It's looking pretty good,  matches fairly well and is pretty flat. so far. 

Still got a few bits to make and I've got all the welding to finish but so far it's pretty ace.

Stitching it all back in. 

It's looking pretty good on the whole,  fairly flat. 

In places.

Just got two little patches right at the back to weld in and then it's all connected again. 

I'll give it a hammer up and a bit of grinding then slap some high build primer on it.

All done. 

Well the welding is. 

Made new body mounts and fixed the rust along the back edge. 

Still gotta dress all the welds properly then I'll chuck some primer on it.

Sanded all the surface rust then I put the brunox on it with a good thick coat. 

When that shit dries ill brush a good coat of epotec over it all and see how it looks when is all one colour and i can see the shapes better.

Well,  turns out of you put a really heavy coat of brunoxxxx on the steel it takes ages to dry. 

Like,  4 days in hot weather.

Anywho,  i gave it a scuff with scotchbrite and brushed on some epotec 408.

Now i can finally see the shape and how it looks/fits into the car. 

Honestly I'm fucking stoked with how well it all fits up. Little bit of fettling here and there and she's good. 

I tried to take some photos that show as best I can how it looks IRL.

In between the times I have been de-rusting, sandblasting and painting all the random brackets and bits and pieces. 

In the evaporust for a few days then sandblast then a coat of etch to seal it up until I paint them properly. 

I think all of it's done now save one bumper bracket.
