EmmyWest Posted October 12 Posted October 12 Far out my green ass didn't even notice the bike section here. would be rude not to share my project. some will be familiar with the build through my instagram but ill try go into more detail here. Story starts off with my old man getting this off a workmate circa 2005? (along with a couple of other much less interesting scooters) As a kid, I thought it was an ugly piece of crap, and I was right, but I had no idea of the potential of these bikes until almost 2 decades later; until I heard about Syd's Run. When i finally got into this in Oct 2022, I fully realised how hilarious the "'""modifications""" are that the previous owners have done to the bike. Medication pill bottle for the intake, with red RTV. Paint can for the side cover Rubbish bag lookin' seat whatever that rear guard is?? insane. 2 1 Quote
EmmyWest Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 A plan was formulated, a small fortune spent doing the classic M Bike parts buy. 1 Quote
EmmyWest Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 got the frame fully stripped and sandblasted, some rust under the seat area, as expected as the foam was wet 1 Quote
EmmyWest Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 next job after prepping the primer was to start paint. There was 10 different colours to mix up and apply 4 Quote
EmmyWest Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 I decided to paint the bike in two different colours on each side. Mainly because I couldn't commit to just one theme on such a goofy bike, so why not make it look even goofier and kill two styles with one stone. First I started on the Britten themed side. had to make the pink from scratch (because apparently the PPG colour was a secret? not sure how much truth there is to it) as it was a bit hard to match the vividness. used the red dye from Mazda soul red to adjust the colour and by pretty much winging it, got it bang on. Used a Subaru metallic blue for the top blue, a ford falcon colour for the solid blue. overall this side took around 5 hours ish? if i remember correctly. 5 Quote
EmmyWest Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 Then next was the classic TRD themed side. As a Toyota die hard it was an easy choice. This side took much longer, had to re-do sections due to the fine line tape lifting in spots, the 3 layer pearl base coat, extra lines to mask. this side took around 6hr. Overall super happy with how it turned out 6 1 Quote
EmmyWest Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 fully unmasked and in the sun, already so surreal how much of a transformation it's had. oh also i had under-sealed with texture the inner guts of the frame 6 Quote
EmmyWest Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 I had also put a gold Xirallic in the clear coat for the TRD side, and a Blue Xirallic for the Britten side 8 Quote
EmmyWest Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 Next up was test fitting the engine and few other bits. The fresh black block contrasts so well against the white 3 Quote
EmmyWest Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 Hilariously I had spent a LOT of extra time painting the swing arm, which turned out well. but as for the front forks, after painting myself to exhaustion over this short period, I had accidentally painted the forks the wrong way around. It took so long masking out the colours again, but as big of a balls up this was, it was a blessing in disguise. Because I think the lines going opposing directions against the frame looks shit quite frankly. A simple example of why sometimes less is more. I had fixed this by re-painting the forks in Pearl white, and the Subaru blue metallic respectively. 3 Quote
EmmyWest Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 Thanks to @Truenotch for sourcing me some Michellin tires. I got the white tire ink pen out and did some scribbling. lots of test fitting the repro parts, of course they mostly fit like crap. so a lot of this stage is trying to remedy that 7 Quote
EmmyWest Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 Put them on some wider wheels for a slight stretch 3 Quote
EmmyWest Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 One of the few original parts still on this bike is the rear hub. Managed to give this a decent polish up from the decades of oxidisation. Far from perfect but shiny enough. 2 Quote
EmmyWest Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 took some photos after getting it to a decent milestone having lots more things attached 8 Quote
EmmyWest Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 Because the suspension was much lower, the sidestand needed to be shortened. so out came the angle grinder and the welder 2 Quote
EmmyWest Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 I had also decided to paint the fuel tank a bastard soul red with some hectic flakes in there. photos do absolutely no justice but this looks like a disco ball in the sun. too bad it'll never been seen! 7 Quote
EmmyWest Posted October 13 Author Posted October 13 A lot of what was next was trial fitting all the parts I bought, and deciding what i did and didn't like. mainly things like handle grips. different iterations of throttle cable etc etc 4 Quote
EmmyWest Posted October 13 Author Posted October 13 next thing was to get this exhaust sitting a lot better, so it doesn't scrape as bad, and have it sitting better 7 Quote
