Gyrocket Posted August 9, 2025 Posted August 9, 2025 Looks like Soo much fun! Any bike criteria? I've got a few to choose from Quote

We have had larger bikes on this ride before, but it's not in the spirit of the ride. Your bike also needs to be able to handle gravel/loose uneven terrain. And you gotta be able to to sustain an honest 75-80kph sustained speed (when road conditions permit) otherwise the back up drivers will hate you on the faster/sealed sections. Same goes for rider ability too. We get a good spread of rider ability. (From the mad dogs, clipping at the heals of the ride leader, to the guys at the very back. But if you're not confident to sustain a decent clip (when the road surface permits) again the back up guys will hate you. I'm not a super confident rider myself. But I can get by okay. Off road appropriate tyres are mandatory too. 1 Quote
Gyrocket Posted August 9, 2025 Posted August 9, 2025 Ok sorry, far too excited didn't manage to use all the nessacary words 😂 I've got a postie with a zs212 in it that is probably my pick and a few guys I know have perfect bikes, mb100, cb125T, nbc110, ct110 ect but I've also got a mate with several bikes smallest being a drz400 Maybe he just needs to add a small bike to his collection! I've not ridden down south ever, we are from Gisborne Bit of a treck but if we are welcome I'd say there will be a few of us keen! 3 Quote

Truenotch Posted August 10, 2025 Posted August 10, 2025 The 212 postie will be fine @Gyrocket... The engine won't be your limiting factor in a postie frame 😄 1 Quote

Mof Posted August 15, 2025 Posted August 15, 2025 Heh. You could do it, but you'd need a serious lack of self preservation I offered to ride the last one that came along. I might have kept up, but I probably would have smashed the shit out of it. But she didn't want to ride my XR because she couldn't reach the ground on it 1 Quote
RUNAMUCK Posted August 15, 2025 Author Posted August 15, 2025 Monkey bikes survived the first year we did this ride. (New efi monkeys) Tiny wheels are really making life harder than it needs to be. Quote
Chris.QCR Posted August 15, 2025 Posted August 15, 2025 I remember Shaun riding the east cape escapade on a OG monkey with a 110 . Different terrain but still a big effort from a little bike 1 Quote

Dw though because both support vehicles have winches for retrieval 2 Quote
Hemi Posted August 17, 2025 Posted August 17, 2025 I think @BLIZZO has had a similar experience over the motu. Was in a support vehicle and spotted some skid marks that came closer then I'd like to see to the edge. That one had no bush either Wiley coyote spec cliff Quote
tortron Posted August 17, 2025 Posted August 17, 2025 i think it was shakotom needed a winch/treetop removal 2 Quote
RUNAMUCK Posted August 17, 2025 Author Posted August 17, 2025 Will you be riding down to join us @tortron? 1 Quote
BLIZZO Posted August 18, 2025 Posted August 18, 2025 yea not me but there have been a few others. Shakotom went over and Mitch also would up a fair way down a bank another year. I got run off the road by a crazy local on the Waikaremoana road, not long after my talent had also run me off the road and into a drain. Quote
RUNAMUCK Posted August 18, 2025 Author Posted August 18, 2025 I almost traded paint with a forestry hilux on the motu on the 2018 ride. Quote
