They then got spun up on some fancy massive machine to balance them and get a report for LVV and job jobbed. Cost me maybe $300 all up

that's a good point too, I'll ask CDC if their off-the-shelf axles come balanced. The LLVTA lists "axle modifications" as requiring a cert but reading into it, it looks like they might be talking about live rear ends more than anything

My Imp goes to LVV this month some time and the engineer mentioned he needed to look more into what the cert process is for half shafts. If you go down that path tag or PM me and I'll let you know what I needed. I just got the paperwork from the engineering shop just in case. I'm not sure if I'll need to get them crack tested or not.

hey @cletus just to save me asking the same question in the certs thread, what do you think about this, do aftermarket half shafts require a cert? Mine are "professionally manufactured" (according to the UK seller, who don't supply any kind of engineering declarations with the parts), and dmulally's are locally built

If you're talking about an aftermarket replacement bolt in half shaft and everything else is stock, and it's a shaft only ie not a jag where the shaft is also a "suspension arm" , probably not

If it's to fit some other diff like a datsun etc it would need a cert for that anyway so would be covered at the same time

Still waiting for the call off the bench. He just had major dental surgery so I dont want to push him.

He is 20 mins away so wont be a drama when the time comes.

What about looking at the relatively new trend of the side by side off road buggys.
They have independent rear ends and the diffs dont look that big plus they might have lockers built in.
Even a front diff could be an option, rotational direction dependant.

I actually ended up buying a drop-in LSD unit which replaces the weakest part of the diff, so kept what I have and hopefully that will be enough. bought an off-the shelf CV axle conversion kit as well, the whole cost being.... oh shit probably more than an R200 and conversion kit, whoops

There’s a kit that fits an R200 in a small chassis Triumph?! 🤔

I typed out a big long answer to this while thinking "surely this guy already knows about the datsun diff mod".. then realised I meant to say R160!
