Ceramic paint coating

We bought our Holden Colorado new in 2018 and had a canopy fitted at the time. Decided to have it ceramic coated so I didn’t need to polish it. I only wash it with a proper automotive detergent. I have been using the roof racks quite often lately, but when I went to tie some timber on today, I was meet with this. Only on the canopy. Anyone else have had this experience or heard anything similar.

Clear coat failure, often UV related, probably not anything to to with ceramic coating.

Might even have had a touch up, touch up clear seems to lift first from what I have seen

Yeah, But the ceramic coating is supposed to stop the clear coat from failing , and it is only 6 years old.  
we had a Suzuki Swift done a few years before this . Had the same issue on the plastic painted trim but not on the steel panels.  Though they were still fine at the time I had the ute done.

I'm not so sure that ceramic coating will provide much if anything in the way of uv protection. 

I'm with @tortron the canopy re clear failure, it will have a different clear coat perhaps of a lesser quality to that of the rest of the vehicle.

I will be talking to them tomorrow to see what they have to say. 

Both times I was told by two different dealerships the same thing. You never have to apply polish to the paint again. The coating protects the paint from the UV.

I totally agree it looks like a clear coat failure and will be. Of course it could well be car dealer BS.

Bet they only ceramic coated the body and tray, and left the canopy.

Not that car dealers would do such a thing.

Yeah I would assume the ute itself would be good quality paint and clear, and the canopy will be made in nz and painted locally by the lowest bidder

all our work utes mid 2020 get pretty grot up there from lack of being able to reach it to properly clean it and they go all powdery (toyota white)

I spoke to the owner of G3 detailing and was told the trouble with the dealership organising it is that they farm it out to whoever does it the cheapest. Probably only good for a year. At the time I thought there was only the one place locally that did ceramic coating. 
That and the quality of paint used on the canopy won’t be the same quality as on the ute body. Probably as Cletus said I would think.

 I think I had better get some polish on the ute body rather quickly.

I got a receipt with my lexus for paint correction and ceramic coat $1989

Comes with a 5 year warranty what ever that covers im not sure.

It does come up nice with a wash and chammy.

The main issue in these situations is the body is painted in a totally different manner to the plastic canopy as is in this picture. It is a clear coat issue as the base coat is still there. Super common on nearly all aftermarket painted plastics

The ceramic coating is supposed to stop the clear coat from failing. But as I have now found out when it is organized through a car dealer you get the quick and short term coating. Not that I knew that at the time. I think the cost was $600.00 at the time.

Locally now it is about $1600.00 with a 5 year warranty. It does give the car a nice finish and protects it. Yeah, and a wash makes it look like new again.

Don't use dealers for coatings, take it to a proper detailing place. Ceramic coating has become a bit of a buzzword and from what I've seen they either smash out a quick polish and throw a spray coating on or they use duraseal which IMO is total garbage. A detailer will advise you on the appropriate quartz coating for your needs. In future if you wanted a coating go see your local detailer and get a quote. Ceramic helps with UV protection but it's main benefit is to stop dirt and grime from sticking to the paint and damaging it, also can reduce the amount of swirls and light scratches and of course just makes the car extra shiny.

Thats what the guy did that I brought my car off

You could buy a lot of spray wax for that

/I'm sure OEM paint usually lasts more than 5 years anyway with minimal care

Wow, that is a big bill. I know there are different coatings they can apply. I had the Tiger at a car show locally and a detailer gave me his card and said it would look real nice with a wet look coating. Didn't give me a price at the time. I was thinking of getting a quote but never did.
