Damo's Sailing Boat and Tow Vehicle

It was a welcome break from grinding and welding galv (poorly I add) to be able to work on the boat. 

Started off with getting the centerboard in. That thing weighs more than I do so I wasn't looking forward to it. I tried going from the bottom (fnar fnar) but that was 5mm too low and I cbf'd adjusting the strops.

So over the top she went and my back loved it. 

Then the fun game commenced of lining up the pivot pin hole. The pin is a 19mm stainless rod tapped with threaded holes to put bolts in that clamp washers to the casing. Interference fit so that was fun. I glued the shit out of it with 3M 5200 and as soon as that dries it can go in the water owing to it being under the water line. You can see it below. The c/b stops are door stops. 

Next up was to put a doubler (along with a gusset on the other side in the locker) that will hold the c/b pulley line to keep it up (fnar fnar). You can see I'm just using whatever I have left over with the oversized washers. I don't care anymore. 

Then when that was done I was able to finally put the flooring in which I have wanted to do all week. That was reasonably easy but bulkhead 4 was a different height to the rest. I always thought it looked odd but ignored it. Lucky the decking curves over it so no harm done. The other thing I put in were the inspection hatches. I hate plastic ones so got some stainless ones. I doubt I'll put anything under the seats but if I go for a decent jaunt I could fill it with food I suppose. 

So as soon as that glue dries on the c/b pin I can splash test it. I put a couple of random washers on some scrap wood at the same time so I can get and idea of when it'll cure.

Even polished the topsides today.... and the apprentice helped! To be fair, i told him when he offered to help, that after having to polish my old bosses boat every summer i was not going to ask him to help me. But he did anyway.

I have a thing about having to pay to launch in the lake, when the river is free and behind the house.

But i would make an exception to do a laketrip boat convoy.

Painted some bits today and as enamel epoxy takes forever to dry I'd give it a helping hand by dragging her into the sun.

Launch went well although the current was mental. I don't think the little 4hp is going to cut it sadly. Also in any kind of swell it really needs a rudder so I'll sort that next. Really happy to have that ticked off the list. Thanks for all the kind words, fellas.

If you make it back to shore that means any leaks are inconsequential!

9.8hp motors are generally similar weight to the 4-6hp motors, but with plenty of power. Will need a 10l tote tank though.

If you do bring it up to the big lake you can test my little tohatsu out, cant remember if it is short or longshaft though.

Not a one! I would possibly like the outboard to be a couple of inches deeper in the water but I'll wait until I have settled on an engine first and can adjust the rise and fall bracket. 

Was surprised at how stable it was. I didnt put the centreboard down and felt like a pontoon.

I'm not a fan of single cylinders and for 4 strokes the smallest twin bangers are 8hp.

Next time out I'll take either the Honda or the Johnson 8hp which both require a tote tank so no stress. 

I really like the Honda but it weighs a lot more than the 2 stroke.

About that. I spent the first couple months staring at the plans confused and had another couple months break to sort the workshop.

Made a start on the rudder. Kinda following the plans but not really.

Lots of faring still to go, especially on the lower piece which has to be foiled.  Also have to work out what to do for a downhaul as it will want to float up. The uphaul is just a rope. 

The options are spring tensioned, downhaul line, or bungee cord. Downhaul line will be best but if it hits something will then cause problems at the other end. So leaning towards spring also because bungee cords are shit these days. 

The other other option is to put a lead weight into it but I'm not sure I could be bothered.

Rope downhaul attached by a suitable sized zip tie is what I used on my beach cat.

Finding a spring that won't rust is problematic and yeah bungee is shit.

It's finished enough!

So I dropped off the fag packet sketch of the rudder hardware at the engineering shop today. They'll make it in stainless for a little more than it will cost me to buy the stainless. 

Also thanks to @Adoom being an all round rad cunt, I got some mini wheels for the trailer. 

I also picked up some second hand but unused tyres for the landy for less than half what new would cost. Should work well for the boat ramp. 

And speaking of boat ramps I popped to the lake yesterday to see what things are like there in a bit of a breeze after some decent rain. 

Looks like I need to school myself on how depth sounders work. At one time it seems people sailed on it however.
