Chris' (in)practical daily and every expense spared musso

It's okay, significantly better than a straight pipe or no muffler and it was the right price

Just needs more fuel screw and more boost

Had a chat with my mate who supplies clutches. Nothing available in nz to suit the om606 flywheel/gearbag combo so I'll have to find something ex Europe. Ideally the dual mass flywheel needs to be replaced as it can't be re surfaced but every expense spared so I'll clean the rust off and send it.

Most likely the friction plate won't like it and I'll and end up buying a flywheel and plate afterall but that's future me problem

Quick 4 hour return trip and I swapped the gearbag today for one with a speedo drive to try and simplify speedo side of things, it has the speedo drive gear and different rear housing with provision for a speedo sender. The mount is slightly different too which should make it easier to fab a mount up 20250710_1725232.thumb.jpg.6d68f737baa6b4297f78ad41f96e666d.jpg

I grabbed a speedo cable from a w201 190e at pick a part. Might have to barry up a Honda speed sensor on the end for a electronic sensor (beagle has a sensor that clips onto the end of the speedo cable for the cluster)

I was thinking the btr box was behaving nicely after the tps in a can but 3.5 hrs in on the way home it decided otherwise. Torque converter lockup 4th violently into 3rd was a good wakeup

20250710_2000002.thumb.jpg.a1800403562f334017bb5b30de5b44ba.jpgwhen I got off the motorway it decided second was all it wanted. Turned it off and let it cool down and it's back to all 4 gears again. If it's not raining tomorrow I'll check the fluid

Could also be placebo but it does feel like it goes better after its mufflerectomy. Not like I could be pressing the pedal any harder than I was before.

If I had more caring I'd have a look under the house and see if i had any more 3"toob left and let the musso breathe better, but if I remember correctly it's under @Raizers van

On that note..

In the wind yesterday a grinder blew under the musso and the muffler fell off, it also blew under the Honda and the reso /reducer section of pipe fell off

Don't know why it has that weird bulge, possibly was fitted under a bit of compression and all the super hot exhaust from the single cam honda powerhouse softened it?

20250728_201458.thumb.jpg.d4f5b28d2f190064d61382c3bb1cb79b.jpg

Another gust of wind blew some seagulls under the musso and welded it in.

The welds are ugly and the pipe moved as the seagulls didn't do a good job of holding the hanger in position

But it now moos and makes some 5 cylinder noises

Bum dyno says its no faster

Really looking forward to having a manual behind it.

So instead of actually checking trans fluid level I'll just give it a another turn and a bit on the fuel screw and if I can't find the aliexpress boost tap might just plum the wastegate diaphragm to atmosphere

Just need to win lotto and get a om605 as thats dohc /revs higher

Probably should have cleaned the camera lense but you get the idea

Found the alix boost tap and installed that

20250801_175017.thumb.jpg.7759a6cd4d9ca2897ed7c40dd1008d39.jpg

Gave the pump another turn and a half on the fuel screw

20250801_184704.thumb.jpg.1918165d24ddb345143c98179e9cdcfc.jpg

So it's 3 turns total now on the fuel screw.

I might actually have to spend 5 mins with the multimeter and re check the tps, transmission computer has decided its just a 3 speed and 4th along with torque convertor lockup aren't the options I get today

Seems to go better now ignoring the fact 4th isn't engaging and the pump/Governor is reducing fuel as its close to redline

do you know what psi the oem bov opens at, might be getting close at around 20psi.  if u give it too much more you may just be blowing it straight out

No blow off valve on this diesel.

Unless you mean wastegate and its blowing the gate open? If that's the case then I'll happily ignore it

Cleaned the lenses and tried again

That's as much smoke as I'm comfortable with without a egt gauge in it.

Spend 3 hours looking for a workshop manual that had tps voltages in it. Finally found one and grabbed the multi meter out.

Spec is meant to be 0.3 - 0.9v closed and above 4 wide open.

It was quite far out of spec. Can sort of see the pink dot on the screw and tps where it was originally set

This service manual has the (hopefully) correct re learn procedure

Here's hoping that it behaves like it should now

The aliexpress boost tap thing probably is blocked and it's free boosting but I'm not going to do anything about it

20250802_200154.thumb.jpg.43f200f76222f4a46f4306780f60846d.jpg

Now the tps is set and re learned the trans is shifting the nicest it ever has in my ownership.

It now goes hard for what it is. It's not fast by any stretch of the imagination but it can actually accelerate up hill and even exceed the speed limit uphill now.

Ideally it needs a touch more air (flow not boost) and a egt to keep a eye on that side of things but that involves money I don't want to spend at the moment.

Edit: I did do something about it

Turned the boost tee down to one 'click' from the bottom (peaks at about 16 psi now) instead of 5 and it's slightly faster, probably not full of super hot air and turbo was way off its efficiency map

interesting it doesnt have one. even though its auto talot of the older japs had a BOV in the inlet tube so doesnt over pressure when taking foot off thrttle.   we found the 4m40 challengers were around 21psi before was bypassing. quick little mod and she was away to kingdom come haha.  never went boom either. alot of  hard towing kms it did

Hmm interesting, I've personally never seen one on a diesel but haven't worked on a huge variety of them.

Now the tps is set correctly the transmission is shifting the best it has in my ownership which is nice

Been meaning to give the merc wagon a trans service since I got it, just so my inner barry knows its been done. It was a good excuse to go for the  2012+ 'deep' pan with the much better filter

Screenshot_20250809_215943_Firefox.thumb.jpg.694f6d0e6b8c87f0f29b1aeca6a56aa6.jpg

Borrowed a hoist (thanks Jason)

Drained the old fluid and dropped the old pan. The fluid was a bit brown but didn't smell horrible.

20250809_1706522.thumb.jpg.6b884a0ea7c01cd7ead193290c623c8a.jpg

Nice and clean in there and no glitter or excessive clutch material in the pan.

Fitted the new 'deep' pan with new single use aluminium bolts and very carefully tightened them to not snap off nm of torque

Used my genuine Mercedes transmission fill tool and pan adapter made by@Raizer20250809_1802532.thumb.jpg.054c238f856c30bf502d386194769ad1.jpg

There's no dipstick on the 722.9 trans in this, there's a factory 'tool' which is a dipstick. There's a little plastic tube that clips into the pan above the drain plug. Spec is run the car until transmission temp is 45 and the fluid no longer drips out of the drain plug.

It shifts even smoother now.

Did a oil change while it was in the air and I had the drain pan out. Forgot my filter tool but that's easily accessible on top so will change that later

Engine on this doesn't have a dipstick either but a service menu in the dash tells you how much oil it's got

Forgot how nice this is on longer drives and after driving the musso it feels super fast. 225 kw vs 88 kw is a decent difference in power with similar weight vehicles

Had a quick trip to Mexico in the musso. Pretty sure it's up on power compared to before when it could barely manage 80 so I'm happy enough with it for now

20250823_0103402.thumb.jpg.2156932431e64e7db3c0be983b9d0ef2.jpg

The resonator was fine for scumbaging around commuting but as I'm heading to Hastings soon figured I'd get something a bit quieter. Kept a eye on marketplace and scored a coby muffler for $30.

Carefully back purged the pipe with burning grass and mud smoke due to my excellent work area and preperation

20250825_184932.thumb.jpg.189fd56f06013a986cbf133c0f35c49d.jpg

Sounds less bad now

Watching that there's a bit of smoke off boost so ideally I need to wind the alda (boost aneroid) back a bit to pull a bit of fuel out before it sees boost. It's right under the manifold so it can wait until I have more fucks to give before I adjust it

Last few times I've gone to start the musso it's been difficult.

It uses the mercedes glow timer which has its own temperature sensor

Since I've adjusted the pump its moved the throttle pivot (down stream from my other throttle rod schenanagins)

Now I know what could be causing the issue I'll continue to ignore it

20250828_175315.jpg

Edit. I was wrong and that's the gauge sender

Did about 1200km over the weekend. Collected a engine, kitset compressor and collected some other stuff for Hamilton osgc. Went surprisingly well and even managed some uphill overtaking manuevers.

To quote @Raizer "it goes as well as a 1kz with 3"exhaust and slipping trans"

Rear springs are fucked and bump stops got a workout a few times.

I'm tempted to wind down the torsion bars upfront to match the sagged springs out back. Will ignore the musso for now as I want to get the Honda drivable again

It'll take a pair of 1120940004 aka MANN C3698/3-2.

i dont think i have those. but whats your rego anyways

No worries bro 420 is the rego gee

A104 xxx will be for petrol. I'll need to measure musso airbox as the clearance ripco filter listed to fit was too big
